PULLING WALLS: POTTERY 101

A detailed explanation for how to pull walls efficiently. After getting a good grip at the base, without wobbles, squeeze evenly as you travel all the way up to the lip. Your throwing lines will be your proof of progress.
The "ring" that you see traveling up can often be spotted while watching videos of potters on the wheel. I hope this video explains that for ya!

Where were you when i first started playing in mud. This is a cracking video, your explaining how and why your doing each step and showing it as you do it. This is an ideal 'how to' video. once back in class will go back to basics and follow your lead. Thankyou

Thank you so much. I feel like you explain with a lot of clarity. It helps a lot. The thing I struggle with is I feel like, when pulling, my finger on the outside is almost digging hard into the clay. I guess I'm not sure of how much pressure to apply inside and outside. I often also end up with it getting wobbly very quickly and very thin up top, but still very thick at the bottom.

Very straightforward explanation and demonstration. I’ve never had a problem centering, but I do have a problem with getting the base the right thickness every time. I like the lack of extraneous detail in this video, as one can see what’s happening anyway, and can concentrate on the wall pulling.

This explains it so well. I took my first wheel throwing class and my instructor couldve been more helpful. The technique she gave us was just one, I struggled with it, she couldve explained how to position ourselves, what was giving me the issue with pulling the clay, but even when I asked her if there was another technique she just tells me theres other techniques and didnt bother to show me another technique even though during the whole hour I was struggling with pulling 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️

Hi! I have a question - the problem I run into is that my clay gets really top heavy… the top flares out and when I try to cup my hands around it to pull the top back in, it folds over itself and the whole thing falls apart. Any tips? Thanks!

Which way should the wheel be turning if your right handed? I have all the steps down up until the pulling. My finger nics it or it starts to spread out wide and flops. Help?

I found your work on Instagram and followed you over here to KZbin. I appreciate the way you explain things clearly. How long have you been throwing on the wheel? I started back in February with ceramics but have been hand building most of the time. I found an instructor near me who has helped me start using the wheel but I need quite a bit more practice. Great video, thanks.

I've been throwing for a few years. I tell my students it takes at least four weeks to start understanding the basics...Definitely will take a long time to learn how to center properly, but be patient and spend all your time centering because none of the other steps will get better unless you center! And you will get there eventually :) Thank you

@@michellewen8743 Thank you. I can center pretty well but I pull the walls up either too fast or slow depending on the wheel speed. I struggle to get that timing right. I will keep practicing. Have a great day.

Rewet your hands or use a sponge that'll hold more water. You'll have a lot of water on your wheel when first beginning which will lessen some over time. But ultimately it's the water that keeps the friction down - the slip mud that's made from this can be useful too.
