If the paint turns yellow after the top coat is applied then it’s the woods patina popping through. You have to seal that in with a shellac then apply another coat of paint and seal with the polycrylic I know how that feels with all the hard work and that ending up happening.

I take used wood furniture outdoors on a hot, windy day. Hit it with the garden hose and wash every inch with a good lemon-scented dish detergent. I get the top, bottom, back, inside and out. If there is odor, add liquid bleach or an anti-bacterial to your wash water. While washing, take note of any needed repairs. Rinse thoroughly. As you rinse, pay close attention to the flow of clean water over the wood. That will help you find any grease slicks or contaminant residue that would interfere with paint adhesion. Rinse thoroughly and dry in the bright sun. Water does not do damage to the wood if it is not allowed to sit and soak. However, I would not chance a soap and water bath on a valuable antique, because the finishes, adhesives, and veneers might be too fragile.

Love the piece , I bought one for 30 bucks also , just a word of advice from experience in the past , if you use a shellac before painting it is a life saver on any old or dark wood , works the best ever, I have tryed everything , it's the best for bleeds and blocking tannis from the wood, and you could fill with a like layer of wood putting were the veneer came off, all from back experience, if I would have know ahead of time , it would have saved me so much time and money lol , Looks beautiful!!!

I’ve found sugar soap liquid spray helps to stop bleed through too because it gets all the nicotine out (even if you don’t smoke - who knows who has smoked around furniture and when you move into a new place. I was 8 months pregnant and in a right state crying because after 3 layers of bright white on my ceiling it would NOT cover it and I was in pain and exhausted after that tbf. So I ended up paying someone to finish that for me , sugar soap and painted ONE coat of white paint after it. He told me to use it on furniture and skirting boards and doors too first etc, which I did a few years ago on dark wood drawers - no bleed through (but the first side I did I forgot to use the sugar soap just a normal cleaner; primer, & paint, it bled through 3 lots of primer and two coats of paint then I remembered I needed to Sue the sugar soap spray 🙄🤦🏻♀️ (I did one side to try first as I’ve become unwell, so it was lucky I only did one side before i realised lol!)

I have been chalk / mineral painting for years and I have found the rustoleum chalk paint in linen white has been the most difficult paint to work with. Very uneven coverage and I found I needed 4 coats even with stain blocking primer to get coverage.

It turned out really nice! I like your distressing. So you started with 1 coat of chalk paint, found out it was bleeding through so you used the primer? Then another coat of chalk paint, is that correct? Did you use a topcoat or just leave it. I just bought Rustoleum Chalk paint today for the first time, I hope I'm not disappointed. This will be my first time at trying chalk paint.
@genevievelynn7374 жыл бұрын
Hey Kelly!! Yes, exactly as you stated above was the process for the chalk paint! Most pieces do not give that much bleed through though. I haven’t had that happen to me often, it just depends on the wood to be honest. I did not seal this piece bc it’s not a high traffic piece or one I will touch often (unlike an end table or coffee table) but I did show the top coat I usually use in the video. It’s minwax polycrylic :) just be sure to do very very VERY light coats. If it drips or is too thick, it will yellow! I hope this helps!
@caseyg124 жыл бұрын
Hello!! Can you use a wax over the Rustoleum chalk paint? And if so, which wax would be best?
@GoingCoastal4 жыл бұрын
This isn't my post, but I hate to see unanswered questions. There are many different clear waxes you can use, here are some: Annie Sloan wax, Varathane paste finishing wax (Home Depot), Valspar wax (Lowe's), BEHR chalk paint wax, Briwax and Dixie Belle, Best Dang Wax. For white paint, I wouldn't recommend Minwax paste finishing wax because it is not clear, it's called natural, and it would tint pure white chalk paint to more of an off-white. Amazon also sells clear wax.

HI! My daughter and I are repainting a dresser and tallboy for the first time :) They are French Provincial pieces and are very old. They had the original finish on them that was quite beige. Anyways, we are on our second coat using this very colour and make of paint that you're using and still need another coat or more. The issue we are having is that we can see the brush strokes even though we purchased the rounded chalk paintbrushes. What are we doing wrong? We are even holding the brushes sideways and dragging in hopes of creating fewer strokes. Thank you
@genevievelynn7374 жыл бұрын
I always use regular brushes like ones you would cut in to paint a wall. Try that! 💛
@valkyriesardo2784 жыл бұрын
Add a little water to your paint dish and use less paint on the brush. If you try for one-coat coverage with a thick heavy layer of paint, you are likely to get brush marks.
