When I saw he had the wheel and fender guard off, I said to myself, “NOPE” due in no small part the fact that I’m a dumbass. And started taking them out from the top. The first 2 went in great, then the third back on the drivers side nearly had me in tears thinking I’d cross threaded and damaged the head, because I couldn’t get the new or started. So... then I decided to go back and start watching the video again. Took his advice and finished in about an hour. Thanks!!!

This sounds like one of those things that you should resign to the fact that removing the tires and fender well liner is the quickest way and move on. Spend two hours trying to be a hero or spend 20 minutes raising the vehicle, removing the wheels and another 1+40 actually removing and replacing the plugs and wires
@stephencannon31404 жыл бұрын
No Air/Impact or electrical tools were used or harmed in the Fi lining of this video. Good call. Even if you use cordless DO NOT use them to break or apply torque. In my case I can have it already threaded out by hand in the time that it takes me to find the cordless drill. Even longer when I realize that the drill I found has a dead battery. A tip from another video recommends doing something like this during the day while stores are open, especially if you accidentally cut or tear a wire. I personally would have new plugs and wires on immediate hand just in case...if not used they should be able to be returned.

I don't know why, but I watched this video this morning after changing the plugs last night. If you prefer to wake up with the backs of your hands scraped and raw, and your entire torso sore as hell, you can do it from the top. Just make sure you have a couple full length albums to listen to, and tell your spouse you will be a couple hours late to dinner. Hope I didn't tear anything up on top of the engine. I did get #8 from the bottom, but without jacking the truck up or taking the wheel off, just laid under there and fought it. Took about an hour just for #8. Wish I had seen the video first!!!!!!!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge with this video. I used it for reference with my 2016 GMC Sierra Denali 6.2 with some slight tweaks. 1. In addition to removing the inner fender and the bazillion 10T torkx screws, I also had to remove the exhaust manifold heat shield to get to the back 2 drivers side cylinders plug wire heat shield. 2. I cut to the chase and did the same thing to get to the passenger side cylinders and it makes the overall process easier IMO as it provides more room for the tongs to get the spark plug heat shields off which honestly was the hardest part of this job. 3. Be sure to check the gap on your spark plugs. I bought TRQs and every one of them had too small of a gap per factory spec.

Thanks for doing the video on how to change the plugs. Just got done with my 14 Sierra today. One trick I found on number 8 was to put a u-joint on the spark plug socket, then use a 4" extension. I was able to hold it straight enough against the firewall that it came out pretty easy. Most of them were easy to break loose (even though this was the first change at 147,xxx miles) and then unscrew by hand using an assortment of extensions. The hardest one for me was actual #5 on the drivers side because of the steering column being in the way. Might have had something to do with only having a 2" and 4" extension. I think an 8" wobble extension would have made that one easier to break loose and unscrew..

Excellent video, thanks. I used long extensions and swivel for #8. Went right along the rear of the wheel wheel (behind fuel line?) and just under the horizontal section of a/c condensate drain. Still, it's a challenge to see that plug or get a hand in to guide the floppy swivel. I spent more time cleaning out the body panel than I did changing the plugs-seriously! (you can't do that from the top). The debris that you show at the beginning of the video becomes a moisture trap and acidic over time (especially pine needles). And don't forget road salt if you've made a trip through the rust belt. Left uncleaned, body rust will start from the inside and make an appearance just behind the mud flaps-too late to clean anything then. The problem is that leaves, nuts, needles etc. fall in from the ends of the windshield trim and have nowhere to exit. I used a wire with a slight barb to work leaves, sticks etc. out though the thin opening on the inside-bottom of the panel while I was spraying water full-force into the top and side. We'll see what it looks like 100k miles from now.

I'm surprised you didn't mention blowing out dirt around plug before removal, ( to keep dirt from falling into cylinder, I admit, with these mounted horizontal, it's not the biggest concern), and using 1/4" rubber hose on top of sparkplug to start it into threads.
@TheSundaeDrive Жыл бұрын
That isn't a bad idea for sure - I've never had an issue on this motor with that due to the angle but always better to be safe!

Great video. Though I did it all from the top I didn’t remove the fender liners. On another note you should use inhibitor not dielectric Grease. Dielectric grease is an insulator not a conductor. Inhibitor is conductive just don’t get it all over then it may track
@TheSundaeDrive4 жыл бұрын
Having done it a few more times I've found that the passenger side is easier below and the driver side is easier from above. Thanks for the tip!
@monctonstrong842310 ай бұрын
the difference between dielectric grease and conductive grease is conductive grease is more of an anti-seize grease with metal in it and dielectric has no metal in it@@TheSundaeDrive

I just done my 2015 done mine threw the top with out removing tires and fender liner,, 2.5 hours and it was done, now that's plugs, wires, and coils ,and all belts and tentioner, 8th was alittle tough but if your mechanical inclined you will be fine..
@SilverDollarSaloon3 жыл бұрын
The driver side can be done with removing the spark plugs from over the top the engine.The passenger side is easier as shown through the wheel well because of the difficulty of the number 8 spark plug.
@TheSundaeDrive3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've done it a few more times and from the top on the driver side is easier.

I did all mine from top used a piece of foam rubber to lay on broke loose with swivel lock head ratchet and 3/8 cordless ratchet reinstall with finger and socket then cordless and tighten final with ratchet #8 1 inch extension on socket and 3/8 stubby ratchet took about 1 hr and 20 min with out pulling tire s and wheel well liners

@@charlesnavarrette1835 Yes,it can be done over the top,but you have to be young and have the special tools.Its easier to take the wheel off and splash guard if your old like me at 70.I like to see what I'm working on

Good video, thanks for that. Why pull all 4 plugs at a time? To keep the system clean, pull and replace individually. Not likely to happen given the orientation of the plugs, but why take the chance of something getting in?

Excellent vid and thanks for the effort and for having the camera on a tripod and such. It is so much easier to follow along. #8..what a pain and you nailed it! ... But taking the fender well covers off is the trick. I have no issue with doing that if it makes for me not having to contort over the fender into the engine compartment!

You don't really need to take off the tires; just remove the passenger side inner fender since the passenger side plugs are harder to reach; the driver side plugs could be easily accessed from the top.
@TheSundaeDrive4 жыл бұрын
Correct, no need to remove wheels and reaching the driver side ones from the top aren't bad.

This is a hotly debated issue and there have been a lot of comments on this ngk recommends against it. If you choose to use some, use very very little as it messes with the torque. Most newer plugs have a coating to protect them from fusing.
@ND-jv4hg Жыл бұрын
Great video. I just checked and it doesn't look like changing them from the top through the hood would be that difficult, rather than through the wheel well. Is there something I'm not seeing where it's just not practical to attempt this? That 8th. one still looks like the toughest.
@TheSundaeDrive10 ай бұрын
After having done this a few times I think the driver side is easier from the top and passenger side is easier from the bottom. I always do the passenger side from the bottom because it makes it so easy to do
@ND-jv4hg10 ай бұрын
@@TheSundaeDrive I mostly agree. I actually went ahead and changed them all from the top. I found the passenger side slightly more difficult, and I wonder if it had to do with being right handed. The most difficulty in doing it this way was reaching over, I had to stand on a stool to reach them, and I'm almost 6'. Anyway, the 8th was still a bear but I got it. Your video gave me the encouragement.

Is it worth spending more money for higher end spark plugs, and if we don't have a torque wrench, just snug it pretty good is ok?
