Young man you did an excellent job explaining this!!! I'm 65 years old and I have battled several times installing tires on my Honda XR650L!!! I think the key for me was doing it on the ground. Thank you!!!

Great advice. Wish I had of watched this two weeks ago before getting a flat trail riding with a mate. Lucky for me my mate was not only proficient in changing a tube, but he also had the right tools (and a spare tube). The point you made I liked the most was the one about making sure you leave the spacers on the same side as the wheel when you remove them. I ride a 17 yr old XR250 and realized (after much swearing and sweat) that the spacers are different sizes and had tried to get the rear wheel back on with the spacers on the wrong side.....DOH! I also discovered that I didn't have a rim lock on my rear tyre (the reason for the flat) so it was off to the local shop to have one installed. Again, great video, and thanks.

When putting it back together I put the tube inside the tire as you did, but put the valve stem in the rim as you put the rim in the tire - saves having to put your hand inside the tire. I also use baby powder inside as it's a lubricant and allows the tube to move around in there - good when you only run 6 pound pressure in trials.

JC, Thank you for this awesome vid. Used your method and was succesful in changing both front and rear. Had to sweat and bleed a bit to get the Sand Paddle rear to break bead, but after that your advice was spot on! The Motion Pro tire spoons were the best. Thanks for the killer vid!
@motorcyclesuperstore10 жыл бұрын
I've been waiting to hear a real success story! So glad it helped, Robert Stronach, and kudos for gritting it out. It gets easier every time, I promise. One tip for getting old knobbies to pop off the bead is to ride around for a few minutes. Take a few psi out and it helps even more, just be careful riding on a low tire. It generates heat in the rubber and softens the sidewall. *Not* something to try with your paddles since riding on hard ground will destroy them pretty quick, but it might help the next time you grab the spoons. You can always remove the wheel and put the whole thing in the sun, too. Sometimes they're just going to make you bleed no matter what! I had to leave it out of the video but a cold beer helps with the sweating and bleeding part... - jc

Great vid, and presentation. I have changed a few now and it is always hard. My tyres were very hard to get the valve in and watching that part again popping it off on opposite side did not help but fiddling with a lever in that way let me get to a position to get it in. I tried as an experiment over on both sides to try to get the valve in but then you cant get the rest of the tube in easily. I did not put in the tube first. I put the tyre on and then put in the tube, pump it up a little as I find that reduces chance of pinching. Took me a few hours though. I have watched tyre guys here play around with the bead to centre the rim when it wont pop on the bead in on a tubeless. Loosen it all off work tyre levers in on far side of bit that wont pop and loosen it a bit. Guys who do this everyday get really good at reading how to push the tyre around to make it easier. Also degree of difficulty is changed by size of tyre and stiffness of rubber. Yours went on easily and you can get your hand in for the valve but mine were much stiffer. Anyway never give up and you get better with practise and having good levers helps.

Good points about noting directional tires and using copious amounts of lube. I'm hesitant to spray lube on the spoke nipples because I don't want anything slippery near the bead lock/groove. Also I never saw the "double out" bead method before -- when you were removing the old tire, you pulled the bead outside the rim on both sides, then dropped the whole rim inside the tire and pulled both beads off from the other side. Genius.

What’s cool about the Windex is it doesn’t leave any soapy residue! This is actually what we use when trying to get tight Tygon hose on medical instrument fittings. I’m surprised that some instructions on KZbin indicate the use of butter; I find that recommendation both nuts and dangerous for rear dirt bike wheels that are probably gonna be around 20 to 25 psi. 🎉

If the bead on the new tire doesn't seat evenly, instead of wrestling with it just put about 20 psi in it, put it back together without tightening the rim lock and putt down the driveway and back, it will pop right into place. Then tighten the rim lock and you're done. Cool tip with the over over, I will try that with the new tire I just bought from you guys, thanks!
@motorcyclesuperstore10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip, Matt South! I've tried to seat the bead by riding with different air pressures, but I always tightened the rim lock first. I'll give your technique a shot. My YZ rim always has a stubborn spot - jc

I just mounted this new tire on Saturday and I put 11# in it and then bounced it like a basket ball on the places where the bead wasn't seated (rim lock still loose) and it all seated pretty quickly. I think it was still damp with windex, and also I'm on a 18" wheel which might be easier to mount than your 19" wheel. But just one more thing to try. :)

David - Thanks for this informative video. I've done tire changes without the benefit of your guidance. Nice refresher. You make it easier. I particularly like doing this myself for safety sake. Years ago, a buddy and I were riding in the Mojave Desert and his front came off at speed. Disaster, as you can imagine. He ended up caught up on a barbed wire fence. I had to unpin him from the barbs. Could have killed him but, fortunately, the barbed wire did not connect with anything critical. Turns out that the brand new tire installed at his friendly moto dealer was done wrong. Overleveraging with the tire iron broke the bead and off came the tire when he reached 40 mph.

It's on though and the tube has been holding 30# for about 7 hours now so I think I'm good... and I went on a quick 5 minute test ride. I'm seriously reconsidering the 18" rear.
