Great tutorial on fuel system maintenance! Always a wise idea to just replace the in-tank fuel pump/sender assembly if the tank has to be dropped for any reason, and try to drain all the fuel before removal, so much easier!

I have only owned and used diesel powered vehicles since 1977, and I have never had to change out a diesel tank in that time. As diesel is an oil they sure seem to outlast petrol ones. I have a petrol powered friend whose Range Rover is now on its third tank in 13 years. I convinced they rust a lot quicker with lead free and ethanol fuel. Anyways Dave, "tanks" for another great instructional video, they are always a welcome watch. David in the UK.

Great tutorial! Can I make one suggestion though? Add heat shrink tubing to the crimp connectors inside the tank. Sometimes crimping will cut the insulation. If that happens on + and - side, could cause a spark. VERY bad thing to have occur inside the tank. Thanks for another great video and thanks for sharing the knowledge!
@cheapwheels98283 жыл бұрын
The previous connections were bare metal ( under the hanger cap) , I dont think there is a spark risk.

This was a much better way to replace a leaking fuel tank (I had an F150 that developed this issue ... really sad memories!) Those hangers were the subject of a recall. Dave, if someone with a farm needed a portable parts washer in the field, a used pump like this could be used with simple green and water, half and half, and an old kitchen sink. It could be run from the truck or tractor battery and be quite a convenience.

Two weeks ago I had to replace the rear brakes, rotors, calipers, pads on my 05 Trailblazer. The lug nuts were so tight I wore myself out just trying to get one tire off. Down to the Harbor Freight I went and picked up the same impact driver you are using. Sure made the rest of the job go much easier. Why didn't I get one of those years ago? Also, how did you get the gas out of the old tank? Were you able to siphon it out?

I assume your fuel pump went out and as you got into the repair, you also discovered a rusty tank? Or, did you have a fuel tank leak and then decide to replace the pump since you were going to drop the tank, anyway?
@cheapwheels98283 жыл бұрын
The filler tube was broke in half from a spring hanger that broke ( before I owned the truck)....so I never used the tank. The fuel pump did work, but the tank had a huge hole in it, and the filler tube was literally busted in half.

This is the one disadvantage of EFI as the fuel pumps are in the fuel tanks. Changing one on a truck is relatively easy but on a car can be a bear. Many often buy the pump and sending unit as one piece but that can be pricey. I've know a few guys who cut a hole on the left side of the bed so they didn't have to pull the tank off to get to the pump.

Noob question here, but is the wire connection water-tight? I would just wonder whether that's a combustion risk
@cheapwheels98283 жыл бұрын
no the connection isnt water tight. If you look at the original connection on the bottom of the pump hanger, its just a soldered metal connection. I dont think there is a spark risk........it "looks" like there should be....but I dont think there is.
