Several weeks ago I was changing the tire on my daughters bike and was having a tough time getting her small 12 inch tire on and off the rim. I looked online to see if anyone had any helpful hints but wasn't able to find anything all that helpful. So after some trial and error I came up with a few little tricks and decided I'd make this video and hopefully it will offer some help to anybody else out there that may be having some of the same difficulties. Hope you all enjoy this video.
Tools you may want to have for this....
wrench
tire levers
needle nose pliers
long flat head screw driver
hammer
a new tire
a new tube
and speaking of a new tube... if you need to purchase one you can find them on Amazon.com at the following link... Make sure you select the 12" tube as there are more than one size here. :)

After about 4 hours of trying to figure out how to put the inner tube and tire back together I searched KZbin and came across your video. Within 20 minutes I had popped the wheel back on the rim with that hammer handle trick. Thank you for making this video.

... forgot to mention that I literally cut the old tire off with tin snips before looking for this 😃 There was a hole worn in the tread, so it was shot anyway. Obviously, I needed a better plan for putting the new tire on.

The video made the job of getting the tyres on easy after I had previously wasted a couple of hours getting frustrated that I couldn't fix a kid's bike ! I used the flathead screwdriver to get one side on first and the wooden handled hammer to finish up. Thank you !!

You want to try a Welbike tyre similar but much stronger steel band same size rims. Tried fitting new tyre and tube last night took 2 hours and tube punctured by the time it was on so today ordered new tubes to start again. I did change one the same as this in your video about a month ago with no problems but good video lots of help.

I'm curious about what size air pump you use for these small wheels? I have an air pump for all the other bikes - but the spokes won't allow the head of the pump to attach to the valve because its too tight.
@Maraksot78
@Maraksot78 5 жыл бұрын
My kids have outgrown this bike now (I made this video 5 years ago) and we gave it away several years ago, but I do remember struggling with airing them up. The easy way was to use my compressor and then check the pressure with a tire pressure gauge. Using a bike pump I would grab the valve stem and bend it as far sideways as I could and clip the air pump onto it. Very often easier said then done. My preferred way was with the air compressor as it was much easier though.

It's been a while since I made this video so I don't remember exactly what I ended up paying but I think it did cost me around $50 for new tires and tubes at a local bike shop. It was a bit more money than I'd planned on spending but with as much as my daughter loves riding that bike it's worth it to me. I tried Walmart first however, because I figured they'd have lower prices than a bike shop but they were sold out when I went in.

Thanks for the video, also I make a suggestion. For next time you change a tire use UD 40 to lubricant the bead of the tire, when you are installing a new tire. It's much easier. Thanks have a good day.

Don't struggle steps to change any tire: Deflate entirely, squeeze all sides of the tire so that the bead (lip) of the tire, which seats on the wheel's rim (lipped edge designed to hold the bead of the tire), can now be pushed into the recession in the wheel (think of the wheel as an U-shaped cross section, where the top edge of the "U" has a "rim" on either side (a flanged part that sticks out). Bottom line is that you want to get the tire bead INTO the BOTTOM of the U-Shape. This allows the opposite side of the tire, from the side you just pushed into the bottom of the U-shape on the wheel, to now have A LOT of space between the tire bead and the wheel's rim (at the opposite side). Now you can get a tire lever between the tire bead and wheel rim extremely easily. From there, if you're doing a front tire like in this video, you can just push the end of the tire lever that's in your hand against the axle. This provides leverage to allow the tire lever/spoon to simply glide around the wheel's rim, thus quickly and efficiently removing one side of the tire from the rim. Then, with the other side of the tire, remove it off of the same wheel rim you removed the first side of the tire. Again, use the advantage of pushing the remaining tire bead into the bottom of the U-shape. Always start opposite the Shrader valve on the tube (installing the tire is reverse, start with the valve). Once the remaining bead is in the bottom of the U-shape (near the valve stem), you'll be able to see daylight between the bead of the tire and the rim again, opposite the valve. Then you can just push the tire right off.

I found out a great trick to help get the tire off . When the tool is attached to the spoke , use the screwdriver by putting it through the spoke next to it and rotate it around . It zips around , move tool and repeat .

Maraksot78 thank you. I went to Walmart to get one but they only sale 12.5 so I was wondering where could I go to find the 12in tubes ??

The 12.5 inch is the correct size. I just call them 12 inch.

Omg! Seriously right? As if parenting isn't enough of a challenge to make you second guess everything you know. Now, it appears you can't change a dang tube on a bike! I cannot believe what a time I have had on this cheap lil bike! You never showed how to put it back on! No joke, everything about this was SO hard. What??

Heather McCasland The professional thing to do is install tire sealant by unscrewing the valve with needle nose pliers, screw the valve back and rotate for 2 minutes before adding air and the sealant will not fix any small punchers. Things as wide as nails or tears are none fixable by sealant but you can line the tire with cloth😀
