How to Change a Thermostat in a Ford Focus

In this video I show how to replace a thermostat housing in a 2005 Ford Focus. I had a pesky engine light that I have been procrastinating and finally read the code P0128 (Coolant Thermostat Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature) which surprised me because my heat seemed to be fine. I read live data and the thermostat was regulating the coolant at 150-160 and after the replacement it's regulating at 205-215 now with significantly warmer heat.
The Part was around $25 and took 2 hours to install with cleanup.

I went to order a Ford Motorcraft thermostat online and some come with a sensor attached. I couldn't see whether mine has one or not.

Thanks! The Thermostat housing had a new gasket pre installed, so i just put it on dry.

Good video man the only thing i’d add is to make sure you wipe down the seal where the thermostat gasket meets the metal on the engine… you deff don’t want anything dirty messing the seal up lol

Removing the passenger's head light makes the work a lot simple and not so tedious.

Did you also take off the power steering pump or just the headlight made enough room?

Did it with out removing the fan or power steering hose like you did but I can do it with my eyes close it was that easy

Make sure the thermostat dot matches woth the dot on the thermostat engine housing

I have a question, how can ensure the thermostat is damage, because I don't know if the temperature sensor may is damage before to change the thermostat.

I didn't see you burp or bleed the system to take air pockets out, how exactly do you do that?

I just ran it and hoped it would burp itself and never had an issue after the replacement

You have to force the issue and repeatedly squeeze the top hose to the radiator until it's up to temp and no more bubbles show up in the reservoir.

Or just leave the radiator cap off until it gets hot and also leave your heater on high

I don't want to give my cars an embolism so I'm gonna continue to force the bubbles to move out.

Beachford is trying to replace the entire housing and draining the cooling liquid and charging me $1299.00, I think it's overkill

Is this thermostat housing made out of gold. They are also charging you for the use of their tools and car bay to do the work in.

I have done this on 2 different “Foci” and that bottom bolt broke both times. 😂 Thanks for showing the location and ease of removing the drain plug. It was a little less messy this time 😊
