How To Change An Alternator On A Toyota Yaris !!!!

In this video I show how to change an alternator on a MK1 Toyota Yaris 1.0 litre!
Also know as a Toyota Echo and the Toyota Vitz in other countries!

Just a big thank you for your much appreciated videos on the various Yaris jobs , they are concise, no waffle ,and really helpful for novices like myself and gave me the confidence to "have a go"! Like a few other comments here , I managed on my car (2004 Yaris 1.3 ) to lift the alternator out from the top after removing the oil sensor without going underneath the engine .

Thank you for this video. It enabled me to replace the alternator , without , I say again without removing the drive shaft from underneath or the engine mount from above. Awesome, been using this guide both times 😅😂. I found out you don't need to drop the exhaust, but you need to have someone for the car to stand on so the wheels can hang down. It gives you 0,5cm/0,195in extra to work with 😂😂😂. Thanks a lot 🎉🎉🎉

Really well put together video, but one tip is to apply a little lubricant or assembly compound such as copper slip, or the equivalent, to bolts and threads. It will make any future disassembly easier and guard against rust damaged threads. Keep on trucking bud!

For anyone doing this job, I couldn't get the alternator out initially, then I removed the screw holding the bracket of those rubber tubes up in the dip and pulled them out of the way. That extra few mm was what I needed to get the alternator through the gap.

I replaced mine two years ago & removed it from the top of the engine, never went underneath the car once. all you need to do is reomove a few pipes and you can get it through the small gap created by removal of the pipes.

There are some comments here about it being possible to remove the alternator from the top. I’ve done it today and this isn’t true - you can’t get the alternator between the inlet manifold runner and a brake pipe on the side of the engine bay. It’s impossible. This is on a Yaris 1.0ltr of 1999 to 2005. Thanks for this video, I would have had a nightmare without it!

Thanks for this. I tried taking the alternator out dropping the exhaust and still struggled getting through the gap but then googled, thinking I would have to take driveshaft out. More awkward to get through than one of those Chinese rings puzzles

No problem! Yeah it's a bit of a bad design quite awkward, once the exhaust is dropped the gap is still quite tight so I only fits if is turned in one certain direction!

Top tip You need to clean / wire brush down to clean metal the place where alternator bolts on to the car because you might have bad earth connection and ruin your new alternator.

I'm not quite sure why you go trhough all this with loosen the exhaust and some other connectors, then you easily can take this out from the top, just unscrew the oil pressure sensor, it's like a 5-10min job. Same engine 1.0L

Yes I renewed my 2015 Yaris alternator today, one 10m screw to remove the oil pressure sensor, A tight fit but the job done, the worst thing was removing the multi plug on the end of the old thing. NOW A QUIET CAR.

How tight should the belt be? The new alternator I put in is screeching so loud. Charges battery but it's very annoying.

Supercar central tells you, “with a used belt the tension is set at the top long run of 11.5 and 12.5 mm deflection. Hope that helps.

Can you tell me what is the name of the bolt that connects the alternator bracket o the engine body? I am trying to find the part number for my Yaris 2009 sedan. It broke and need to replace.

Hi, it's the alternator mounting bolt not sure of the part number try giving your local dealership a call they should be able to supply them or you could try a scrapyard if you have one local to you! Hope this helps!

I don't think the alternator will fit to come out from the top but someone in the comments said that they managed after they removed some stuff. I'm not sure if it's the same engine though the engine in the video is the 1.0 litre!

My wife’s car is a 2007 Yaris, remove the oil pressure sensor 10mm and the alternator will come out from the top.

If you go to a car parts store they will ask for your numberplate and should be able to tell you the right one for your car! What engine does your car have?

It is a 1.0 litre and a 2000 year but the process should be the same on all mk1 with 1.0 engine
