How to Change Automatic Transmission Filter & Fluid [ COMPLETE DIY TUTORIAL ] Isuzu Mu-x + D-max

G'day Guys and Gals!
In this video I show you all of the steps necessary to replace your Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid. This video can be used as a guide for all of the Aisin Automatic Gearboxes. These are fitted to the Isuzu D-max and Mu-x. Toyota Hilux, Fortuner, Prado, Landcruiser 200 and 300. Mitsubishi Triton and Pajero Sport. You will require specific filter kits and oil for your vehicle so please check with your local parts department to get the correct filter kit and oil.
In this video I show you a complete DIY tutorial on changing the automatic transmission oil and filter so you can follow along and be confident in carrying out this type of maintenance on your vehicle.
Firstly we require some parts to carry out the automatic transmission oil flush and filter change -
1. Specific Automatic Transmission Filter kit for your vehicle
2. Specific Automatic Transmission Fluid for your vehicle
3. 10mm socket on 1/4 drive ratchet (for trans pan and filter bolts)
4. 24mm socket on breaker bar (for trans fill bung)
5. 5mm allen key (for trans check bung)
6. 14mm socket and ratchet (for trans drain bung)
7. drain pan with measurements
8. funnel
9. oil transfer pump
10. cardboard and rags
11. brake cleaner + degreaser
12. rags + gloves
13. OBDII Scan tool (for checking transmission data)
Now you have all of the tools and parts required to carry out the automatic transmission fluid and filter change, follow these steps to replace the filter element -
1. Get vehicle to operating temp (15 min drive)
2. remove automatic transmission fill bung
3. remove automatic transmission drain bung
4. catch all fluid in drain pan
5. remove all 10mm transmission pan bolts and catch oil in drain pan
6. remove automatic transmission pan
7. remove 3 x 10mm bolts holding automatic transmission filter down
8. remove automatic transmission filter and old 'o' ring
9. fit new automatic transmission filter after lubricating 'o' ring
10. tighten filter bolts to approx 10NM
11.remove old Automatic transmission pan gasket
12. clean out transmission pan with degreaser and brake cleaner
13. clean all magnets and refit
14. fit new auto transmission pan gasket to pan
15. clean up sealing surface on transmission
16. refit transmission pan to automatic transmission
17. tighten down automatic transmission pan working from inside - out
18. refit drain bung
19. fill transmission with same amount of oil drained out into pan
20. refit fill bung
21. run engine and get vehicle to operating temp
22. connect OBDII scan tool and get ATF to 50 degrees Celsius
23. check automatic transmission oil level via the check bung on sump
24. top up until a gentle flow is seen from check bung
25. refit bung and tighten
26. clean down transmission with degreaser
27. hose of underbody and transmission
28. road test vehicle and recheck work
29. ALL DONE - GOOD JOB! :)
Now I have shown you all of the steps necessary to carry out the transmission oil and filter change you can confidently carry out this DIY task at home yourself. You can spend up to $800 having your transmission filter changed. It is a technical job that requires some experience to carry out. In my full DIY guide I cover all of the steps to ensure you can easily follow along and carry out the job and save yourself a heap of money!
Automatic transmission fluid and filters need to be changed at regular intervals. This if determined by your driving style and how you use the vehicle. I usually recommend changing transmission oil every 40-60k depending of the vehicles use. If you are towing at full load all day everyday then the oil will need to be changed every 40k and the filter every 80k. If you commute in your vehicle and rarely tow you can push the oil change out to 60k and filter change at 120k. This schedule will ensure reliability and longevity of your automatic transmission.

Great video and it helped me heaps with my transmission oil change. I tow a large ski boat with my 2016 mux and the transmission copes a flogging. I took to a mechanic and asked him to change the transmission oil. He said "I didn't change it as it's as good as the day the it was installed." There is a frigging sweet cv shaft replacement video on a dmax on KZbin. Lile 30 or 40 minutes long. Well worth the watch. One thing I learnt the dmax is perhaps the worst of all the ifs Ute's to change it. U have to take so much off just to get to the cv and get it out. I'd hate to do it trackside 😢

There is approx 9l oil dry fill in the transmission. So with the flush and Fluid change you get about half of the fluid out each time. I prefer the penrite oil to be honest. After carrying out this service the transmission is shifting great!

Hey Nick, great work again. Ive got the 2017 dmax with the 6 speed trans. I find it is always searching for gears and unlocking the torque converter in 5th and 6th. Do you have this problem. It doesnt happen with my wifes 2016 MUX. Isuzu said its fine. Im definitely servicing the trans on both after this vid 👍

Hey Andrew, that is very common with the 6 spd gearboxes. They try to keep the engine right in the sweet spot of the rpm for best torque and efficiency. Cheers!

​@@LowRangeNick Car was purchased after 100,000Ks and the previous owner didn't do intake cleans or block/delete the EGR (no catch can), so spraying an acetone cocktail into the intake at this stage will just make a bad situation worse. After inspecting with a scope the EGR and intake need a more aggressive clean. Anyway, it was just a suggestion for your content as there's nothing good on YT, and your tutorials are of great quality 👍

Hi @LowRangeNick, This is a great VLOG exactly what I need at the moment. I drive a YB 2013 Isuzu D-Max 2500 Hi-Lander, so it's a 2 wheel drive automatic pickup in Thailand. But I am not getting it clear how many kilometers I need to change, only on road used pickup, ATF filter⁉️ And for the ATF oil the factory manual says change the ATF oil every 40.000 kilometers. But, from what I see in my garage bills, there are only 4 liters ATF oil changed. So my car now is nearly hitting the 170.000 kilometer mark. And I have the strong feeling that my ATF filter has never been replaced and the ATF oil, ± 11 liters 🤔, is never fully renewed. What would you recommend me to do ⁉️🤔 Renew all the ATF, by flushing they ATF system⁉️ And a new filter, for the first time in the cars lifetime⁉️🤔

Hi Leo, you would be better off doing a few flushes and then changing the filter. If you do regular oil flushes it keeps the oil quality in good condition. Every 40k is a good schedule to stick to though. Cheers

Personal preference and the Penrite oil is LV - low viscosity. This is the best type of fluid to run in the transmission.

There sure is, but it is a bit more complicated, and you have to be careful not to run the transmission dry. You could take off the transmission cooler lines at the radiator and run one into a bucket and the other into some clean oil.

Hi Nick, is there any difference with temperature reading for temp level checking for a 2wd or 4wd transmission? Also, if just draining fluid and recording the amount drained, when cooling from hot will it decrease the amount of fluid compared to when it expands hot? Would you also have a link for your torque wrench you use?

There's no difference in transmissions between 2wd and 4wd. You normally try to drain the fluid when there is some temp in the fluid. I usually go for a 15min drive before draining the oil. I didn't use a torque wrench in this video, just my 1/4 drive gear wrench ratchet 🙂

I would recommend a fluid flush every 50k or 60k and a fluid and filter change every 100-120k depending on how your vehicle is used. If you do a lot of towing then you may need to change the fluid earlier.

Very informative. I have another question not related to this. My 2016 mux always has problem in engaging 4wd. Been back to the dealer for services and replacement of parts. The problem never goes away. It’s frustrating the 4wd isn’t working when needed. Could I have your expertise answer?

You would have to expand a bit on the issues your having? You need to remember to stop the vehicle and put it into neutral to switch into low range. You can flick between 2wd and 4wd high range while driving under 100km/hr.

@@LowRangeNick The problem is turning the dial from 2H to 4H, the 4wd icon keeps flashing in the panel no matter it’s stationary or under 80k/hr. Even I have tried driving forward and backward in very slow speed. Sometimes the dealer said low oil or software problem. The last time they changed the actuator when it was still under warranty. It last over 1 year. As you are very knowledgeable of this model, I hope you could sort out this problem before I could seek service. Thank you so much for your time.

@T Yik If replacing the actuator fixed the issue for a year then I would suggest it is an issue with the actuator again. If you haven't extended the breathers to the gearbox and transfer case it could be getting debris into the actuator when 4wding. Checking the oil level and condition is a good idea too. I'm pretty sure there is an issue with a circlip or something in the transfer case that can brake. You can sometimes see this in the oil. If the actuator and oil are OK it could be an internal issue in the transfer case.

Righto, so the 5 speed Dmax and Mux have 20 x 10mm bolts holding the trans pan on. The replacement gasket is like the old rocket cover gaskets off the fords and holdens. The Ryco gasket is a twisted mess. Should be fun getting it to line up. Nothing like the 6 speed later models, way harder.

@adzoutnabout8666 Testing oil level in park or neutral is fine. I prefer park with the handbrake on so you don't get run over haha The 5 speed has a different gasket and pan design but still same process. The 5 speed usually comes with a cork gasket.

@@LowRangeNicks mate, cork gasket and 20 x 10 mm bolts. Tip for your viewers…. The cork gasket in the Ryco kit comes out of the box like an Octopus. No matter how long you leave it in the sun, it dosent straighten. Once you follow all your cleaning steps, use small plastic cable ties to keep the gasket aligned while positioning other bolts to 2/3rds tight. Snip ties once the bolts have found their threads. Other problems were the transmission cooler lines run over the front bolts (4 ) . You can’t move the lines, even after removing the location bracket on the passenger side of the transmission. A slim 10mm socket slipped from the drivers side across to the passenger side will sort that. Bit fiddly. Wish I had a 3 inch lift right about now. Dropping the pan is also not easy, you need to semi drop the back, then wiggle the front off the mounts down, so it will clear the trans cooler lines. Filter is metal in the 5 speed, not plastic like in the 6 speed. All in all I would say changing the trans filter in the 5 speed is a Fark load harder than a 6 speed, given the gasket, the pan and line positions, and 20 bolts in the trans pan.

only issue with this method is you are only removing around half the fluid, so the trans has 50% new fluid and 50% old fluid - old fluid in the transcooler, hoses and torque converter. To fully flush you need to do as you have done the disconnect the return line run the trans in neutral and pump a litre out, add litre of new fluid and repeat till new fluid come out the return line. Good easy to follow video though.

No sealant is required with this gasket as the sealing surface is flat and there are no joins in the gearbox where the gasket runs. So no sealant necessary.

Great video Nick. I have a 5sp auto 2016 D-Max with 90000km with occasional shifting problems from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. Only seems to happen when cold. Either a bang or doesn't engage and revs a bit on the shift. Could this be a solenoid problem? Oil is full and has been replaced recently.

It doesn't sound good. If you have had the oil and filter changed and the transmission flushed then it must be a solenoid issue or damage to a clutch pack.

U realise u have to keep that mux until I ditch my dmax. I don't wanna tune in one day and find u have bought a jeep wrangler or something 🤣🤣. Fk knows how u get the perfect angle on the camera work but jesus it's perfection nothing is ever in the way. Killer video. I paid 350 bucks for this "service" 1) don't think they did it like that. 2) don't think they even did it at all, as my inspection bung was tight as fk and had no witness marks on it from a recent wrench. One last thing I don't know why isuzu used a frigging hex key plug, always nervous it will strip out 😂😂

Recently did this service on my 2012 DMax, the genius engineers that designed my year put the cross member 20mm to far forward which means I have to jack up the transmission and remove the cross member to remove the sump! I'm sure one of the university subjects when becoming an Automotive Engineer is "How to be a Fcukwit 101".......

However that's about the max Km's I'd feel comfortable with (with this method of "partial flush), provided the tranny was not used beyond suburbs and highway. That tranny's dry fill capacity is ~9.5L, so youre only removing half the previous fluid with this method. For my own Use Case, (some sand, moderate to advanced low range 4WD'ing and semi regular towing of a 1.5T boat, and I enjoy a little 'lead-footery'), a fresh 4L ($60) in, every 20thou km is dirt cheap reassurance for longevity. 👍 (Its only my philosophy: I do the pan off and filter every 40thou & a fluid 'semi-flush' every 20 & have a quality ATF external cooler in line before return via OEM het exchanger)

good tutorial Nick, what would a transmission shop do differently, ive heard they "flush" the trans? Also what's the chances you could do an intake manifold removal and clean anytime soon? , so far the only ones available are all in Thai and of poor quality and workmanship.
