Thanks Kevin. I am retired and medically disabled but fully ambulatory. I am trying to fix up an used bicycle for a 10 year girl [who doesn't know I'm doing this for her] that her family doesn't have money; the other kids have bicycles but her. I took it apart, sprayed it metal flake green [green her favorite color]; and shot it with a few coats of clear lacquer. Now when I went to reassemble the bottom peddle crank shaft, I tighten the nut a bit too tight and crushed the bearings and I do believe I had the gear side one in backwards on top of the crushing. Your video lays it all out clearly on what I must do; so off to the bicycle store for a set of bearings, and then reinstall as you video directs so. Thank for making the video "Blue Collar Style" and not some technical type crap video that are out there. Plain, simple, and to the point.

I went to the closes bicycle shop to me which handles really high end stuff; went back to the parts department and showed the guy the bear; he moves a bunch of boxes around and finds a metal drawer looking thing and pulled out some bearings; the first was missing on ball, but the second had all ten; I asked how much and he said $3; sold. When I went up to the cashier who wasn't there, I noticed a new peddle shaft assembly sitting there with the price tag of $530 and almost fell over. The parts guy seen me waiting and came up front and said, you have $3 cash, it's yours no tax; the $3 flew out of my wallet and off I was gone. I did as you video said to do, and it's perfect; now I am dealing with a front derailleur adjustment since it's an 18 speed. But I'll look to see if you have a video on that too. Thanks again for the useful knowledge, and I think I am only hours away from giving her the bike...as soon as some touch up paint dries and the derailleur issue is taken care of.

@@KevinMillard68 Turns out when I walked into the garage I saw it was NOT a 1 piece crank. I needed to get a crank puller, a tool to turn the ring with the notch, heavy duty grease and then I would still have to go to a bike shop to be sure to get the right size/style bearings. So I decided to just have the bike shop do all the work and keep my hands clean. 😄

Thanks, that is a very nice video. My bike makes a squeaky noise at the same position of the pedals. I was thinking of inspecting and replacing the bearings on my crank. The ratchet on my bike is on the pedal axle. When you coast the chain keeps running. That is nice because you can change gears while coasting. I hate to ignore a small problem then it becomes a big one. What do you advice, and how different is that from what you demonstrated.

If I am having a lot of resistance when I try to push the pedals forward, is that a sign I need to replace the crank bearings? I bought this bike last summer and rode it a lot. Yeah, thanks... I already joined. I am looking forward to seeing this video. I will need to go out and purchase that tool. Any good sources for that tool, and what is it called? Am I doing too much damage? I try to cycle about 10 miles a day. I have not seen another bike where the chain keeps running when the pedal is not, because the ratchet is in the pedal bracket rather than the rear axle, till I received this Schwinn as a present.

I have a clicking sound coming from my pedal area when cycling, would that be due to the bearings being broken and need replacing ?
@KevinMillard6810 жыл бұрын
could be the crank bearings or the pedal bearings or lose crank arms
@lifediversified893210 жыл бұрын
be sure it isn't your chain on the gears trying to shift on you due to improper derailleur adjustments. the chain will often "rub" against gears or the bike causing a "clicking" sound if the adjustments are incorrect, even just a little. if it is the derailleur, make sure to watch plenty of tutorials before messing with those settings! once you see how to adjust the derailleur parts, it is quite easy to get them dialed in with a little trial and error. of course, check the parts that kevinmillard mentioned first.

Lance Newman this is happening with one of my bikes now after changing the tie tube recently now the gear device is misaligned and causes the chain to rub the spokes when in a high/easy gear. I haven't had time to really look at it and figure out how to make it properly aligned. :( I think we need a thorough vid about this derailleur thing your talking about.
