How to Change Engine Oil on Volkswagen 2.0T FSI BPY

A quick DIY tutorial on changing oil on a BPY engine. Apologies for skipping torquing down the plug and filter as there is not much filming room under the car. On the side of engine oil container is a meter that shows how much oil is left in the container. You use that to know how much oil you have added to the engine. Check the dipstick on flat level terrain to recheck it. I ended up adding the entire 5 quarts to get the oil level to the full mark.

I would rather spend my off day doing this than paying someone $200 to change out the oil and the filter, and tbh it doesn't look that difficult if you've got the right tools. Granted, you do make it look easy lol

Pro tip: you can use brake clean to removed spilled oil from engine parts. I have this exact same engine in my 2007 Jetta and changing the oil is always a mess. Being a bigger guy, I like to roll my car up on ramps and then use jack with a block of wood on sub-frame behind the engine to raise the car way up and then place jack stands.

Brake clean is awesome stuff. Every home garage should have one. Gotta use some soon to clean a bunch of oil after I get my oil filter leak fixed.

WD-40 and some elbow grease is so much safer in the engine compartment. I would not use brake clean. Other cleaners and degreasers sure, but brake clean is a very heavy duty thing. I would not use it here.

I've never seen a problem with brake clean. Obviously, the engine is not running nor is it hot. The stuff cleans very well and it evaporates quickly.

Thank you. Although the dealer has a lot easier time dealing with oil changes than I do because they have better tools like a lift which makes the job so much easier rather than crawling under the car.

Thanks for making this video. I am new to VWs, and just acquired an 07 Passat with this 2.0T FSI engine and its so different from the American cars in many ways. By the way, is that the turbocharger diverter valve right next to the oil filter housing? I believe mine is in need of a new one, but im, not sure where it is, but that kinda looks like the part right there next to the oil filter housing...

I'm not sure because I had my mechanic replace it years ago the turbo diverter valve. I had to replace mine because it was leaking air and my check engine light came on. P0299 underboost condition. The new diverter valve from piersburg fixed it. Thats the OEM part.

@@admirbasic2206 Everything we touch under the hood and undercarriage is very carcinogenic. Gasoline + Oil + Grease + Heavy Metals. It's all under the car. Not as much HM these days, but they're still there.

Hello, what did you mean by place the jack stand on a solid piece of metal? Do you mean they can break if you place them in a different area?

Yeah if you put the jack stand on a non secure part of the bottom and you then lower your jack the stand will go through the floor board of the vehicle. The drain plug is a 19mm bolt. The oil filter is 36mm. I used a 36mm oil filter removal tool to get it off. Since I needed my breaker bar to take it off since it was really tight, I had to use that adaptor to fit the 36mm tool onto my breaker bar to loosen the filter.

get 5 and use 4,5 the rest you can add after the engine burns some oil off

Does anyone have any idea if the “retainer post” in the center of the oil filter cap is important? I had a shop change my oil today and they reported back to me that the post in the center that holds the filter in is broken off of the filter cap. It’s an 07 Passat and it doesn’t seem that I can order just the post, it seems as though the post is built into the cap, so I’d have to buy a new cap entirely and the new cap is $212 from the dealership and although I can buy them online for about $15-30, I’ve heard they’re all garbage and leak after a few miles if they don’t leak straight from the manufacturer. Any help or input would be nice, I really can’t afford to replace the filter for $200 and I really don’t want to cause any damage to the engine by running it without that post if that’s possible

If you can buy the part just to replace the broken cap I would do that as a temporary fix and then eventually replace the whole filter assembly. I had mine recently leak oil. 4 hr job at the shop plus the 150 dollar part so not cheap. I replaced the entire assembly for piece of mind not having to worry about it for a long time.

@@AlexNorway-z5z i would check the owners manual to confirm. But the oil i used should be good for that model too. 5w-40 european spec full synthetic oil that meets the vw standard. Verify with your owners manual.
