Always place a medium amount of oil into the filter to fully wet the medium via spinning and making certain all medium is saturated. Fill amount only to wet the medium so that none will spill out horizontally when screwed on. Dry starts are NEVER a good idea. Also, here's a tip............. Place aluminum foil underneath the filter prior to loosening the used filter......., curve over the header so as to allow any dripping to hit nothing more than the foil. No mess as a result. I also - as has already been said, thank you - take the bike off center stand and place on kick stand momentarily as additional oil will come out for better complete drain, then return to center stand.

using a electric driver to remove or install that drain plug is completely insane!
@TucsonDude5 жыл бұрын
Disagree. Never put unfiltered oil into the filter...even if it’s straight from the bottle.
@dimosk73894 жыл бұрын
i heard that "presoak the filter" story from many. it makes no sense. the whole engine is already covered in a film of oil, and that tiny filter onle takes a second to fill up. there is no way that it can damage the engine in any way. when the bike is parked, the whole oil system is drained at the bottom of the engine. it also takes a second for the pump to circulate the oil. there is no difference between a morning start and a start after an oil change

Hey, you should use the factory screwdriver handle instead of the pliers to open the oil fill cap. ;)

Thanx Adam. I like your tutorials and watch them before eveey service. I see the bottom of the screwdriver handle works for the oil cap but I also have a tool from bmw tha I got with my previous air cooled model

Totally right. I don't have my OEM seat anymore so I have found improvisations but you're right.

The handle of the torx screw driver fits on the oil cap ;-)

Because I'm paranoid, I like to fill the oil & run up with the skid plate off just so I can see if the bolt is leaking. I have had that issue before with a defective crushwasher.

Engine temp shows the temp of the cooling fluid, not of the oil. Keep that in mind ;)
@aces9286 жыл бұрын
After draining on the center stand, move the bike forward and put on the kickstand. Additional oil will drain from the oil cooler. After a few minutes, put back on the center stand and continue the process. Try it.

The tool kit under the seat you can use to remove the oil plug. It’s the butt of the handle on the screwdriver.😃

Correct is anything in the sightglass. I have started filling mine to the very top line of the sightglass with no issues.

Adam, respectfully requesting for an ideal set of quality tool kit for both home and road use. BTW, great vlog and I've learned a lot. Cheers, Alan 2018 R1200GSA

Hey. Congratulations on the new motorcycle! The tool kit that I will be buying after speaking with a dozen people is the one from BeemerShop - www.beemershop.com/Merchant5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=MTT001-58 It includes Wheel & Spark Plug removal tools. All you'll need beyond this is a Tire plug kit, a compact DIN Powered air compressor (cycle pump) and maybe one of those battery backup jumper things if your battery dies from a bunch of stuff plugged in overnight :)

Thank you much, checked the website and T55 torx is not included...oh well Amazon is selling it for $9.68 www.amazon.com/OTC-Standard-TORX-Socket-Square/dp/B0002SR28S/ref=sr_1_5?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1512751047&sr=1-5&keywords=torx+t55 Also, I've looked into Ultimate Adventure Designs Compact Tool Kit for BMW R1200GS, GSA, & RT WATER COOLED MADE IN USA with LIFETIME WARRANTY - www.advdesigns.com/ulcotokitfor.html - other than a bit expensive, any thoughts? Thanks in advance
@AdamChandler867 жыл бұрын
ADVDesigns is the other one I was looking at but with the Motohansa, it's everything I need except for a few bolts I already had (like the T55) and a lot of people really like that one. I think both are fine options. You found the two best ones :)

Thanks for the great video. I need 600 service on my new R1250 GS Adventure, I wonder if same oil type and quantity are used on the 1250, moreover, is there any way to clear the service count by yourself? Dealer refuses to clear the service IF you do yourself...Thanks
@AdamChandler865 жыл бұрын
The oil should be unchanged but check your owners manual. Dealers will clear the service light but not all and most still charge. GS-911 for OBDII bikes is $350 I believe. Works with smartphone and computer. You can reset the service light this way as well. If you know someone with a GS, split the cost as the GS-911 can support 7 different VIN numbers.

My dealer overfilled my bike on the 600 service by 13 ounces!!!!!! Even with that, they said it wasn't a problem. I drained the excess myself and vowed to never go back for service there.
@fiveowaf4545 жыл бұрын
That's what I hate about taking anything to the dealer, often they are incompetent, but at best I know I will do a more conscientious job on my own vehicles, I'm able to leave it drain for much longer and make sure the levels are spot on etc. If it wasn't for warranties I wouldn't go near a dealership.
@mrswinkyuk5 жыл бұрын
The dealer _should_ have covered the first service F.O.C. No wonder these places get a bad reputation.
@AdamChandler865 жыл бұрын
This is uncommon. Maybe in your case but I've owned 3BMW bikes. No dealer has even offered that and I've asked for it for free every time.

Looks like they beat me to the part about the butt of the screwdriver handle and the aluminum foil over the pipe. Here’s a couple more though... The drain plug is actually hex, not torx. Also, if you make a funnel out of a plastic Coke bottle, you won’t believe how well it works. Doing my 30k oil change tomorrow.
@AdamChandler864 жыл бұрын
Looks like I need to re-shoot this video to be honest. I've done a lot of oil changes since this one. Would get the language better but I still wouldn't use the butt of the screwdriver for this job. I have a special tool now that makes it easier.
@mikemullis68054 жыл бұрын
Adam Chandler yea I wanna get one of those tools that goes on your keychain. I’ve seen aluminum ones and 3D printed ones on eBay.
