How To Change EVH Wolfgang Special Bridge Pickup

What are the physical differences between the USA Wolfgang and the Import? How can you differentiate between the two? Thank you!

Craig, I'm a bit confused by what you mean by an WG upgrade pickup? I bought a WG special back in 2019 and find the pickup's that came with it sounding just fine. Your video seems to indicate there is a better version PU available. If so what is the part number and best place to get one? EVH Gear only shows a Wolfgang PU and a Franky PU but no indication of an "upgrade" offering. Perhaps I'm missing something on why you changed out the PU in your WG special.

The EVH Wolfgang USA is made in the USA and has different pickups than the EVH Wolfgang Special which is made in Mexico. You can find the USA made Wolfgang Pickups at most major music stores. The EVH Wolfgang Special pickups sound ok, but they are not the same pickups that are in the more expensive EVH Wolfgang USA guitar. The USA made EVH Wolfgang bridge pickup sounds way better than the stock pickup that comes in the EVH Wolfgang Special in my opinion. I hope that clears things up, I assumed most people knew there were different pickups in the more affordable EVH Wolfgang Special. The Frankenstein is also an upgrade pickup made in the USA which also sounds better than the stock Pickup in the EVH Wolfgang Special.

@@cbphotovideotips Thanks Craig for clarifying the difference. Nowhere in the video do you call out this difference i.e. USA vs. Mex build hence where the confusion came from.

@@joedesimone1444 I just assumed because of the price difference between the EVH Wolfgang Special and the EVH Wolfgang USA people already knew there were some differences between the two guitars. You have a valid point. Some people probably don't realize there is a difference in the non USA made pickups.

That's funny, I just watched a review of the Wolfgang by Philip McKnight and he spoke to the techs at EVH and they told him they were the same pickups and specs, no more different than any variance you might find at a factory that produced a run of pickups when you account for values, winding, copper wire gauge etc. It must be just you hearing what you want to hear... Just look at the number of views, less than 2k in a year, nuff said..😂

I heard that the Standard, Special, and USA models all have the same pickups now. I just bought a ‘22 Standard, so I’m curious if I can even upgrade them.

I notice on your Mexican guitar it had a foam block under the pickup. The Indonesian made standards come with a small foam block and 10 mm diameter spring inside the foam block for the screws to attach through. Every import I have been into came with the pickups screwed down almost solid on the body. Same only different again..:)

Watch the video by Philip McKnight, he has a way broader knowledge of guitars and knows hundreds of people in the industry down in the states rather than this dude sitting in his bedroom in Halifax thinking he's some sort of authority on the subject. I spoke to him online a few times before ad he seems like nothing more than a pretentious gear snob with more money than talent or playing skill..

I have been told and you know that goes.. The EVH standard series are made the same way with same wiring and magnets. I assume they are made in Indonesia like that series guitar but don't know that... How about the Mexican version? Sort of like the lower cost PRS guitars. Who and where are different as well as the source of materials. Same gauge wire but made from what quality wire and made under what quality control? I just looked at a set I have that came from one of the new EVH part out companies. EVH Wolfgang std. for sure not made in any where on them. Just a Rohs compliant sticker. That screams import. EVH logo on the back plate so that looks legit. The neck P/U reads 16.43K and the Bridge reads 13.92K. If I recall right the center to center of the poles on both 49 mm. Narrow like the early EVH reworked Gibson pickup. I am more of a 50 52 mm spacing fan. Now this you may find interesting about a year before EVH died and everything got in short supply I bought a EVH pickup in the box from a guy. Dirt cheap what ever it was I paid. He shipped it in the box that I suspect had a genuine USA in it at one time. What he sold me was 99% for sure out of a Indonesian Wolfgang. So it seems he did the genuine article upgrade and sold the OEM import. So lets assume we both have a glass of water. Your glass was filled from a sealed bottle of water packed at a highly regarded source. My glass was filled with well water.. Same only different. However both waters sound the same when you pour them... :)

Trust me the USA Wolfgang pickups sounds way better at the bridge but neck isn't as much difference between the two of the neck pickups
