First time I watched your video. You do a great job documenting for the ones that do not have access to a shop, shop manual but need the car to get to work. And for the rest of us, you showed alternative methods that I always welcome to learn. Keep up the good work! Thank you for taking the time to create and upload your videos...I subscribed!

What I learned: Don't pack your bearings, don't torque anything, don't adjust your wheel bearing axial play with a dial indicator. Perfect!

Honestly, my main question is: Where'd you get a mostly rust-free W210 for the video? In my country, EVERY W210 is rusty, and many W211 are as well (including mine :( )

Is there a specific torque specification to re-install hub nut?

This was good question, probably should not be very hard.
@gkelly941
@gkelly941 5 жыл бұрын
No. Old Mercedes service manuals specify setting the slack in the bearings at 0.1-0.2 mm, using a dial indicator on the hub or brake rotor. The "traditional method was to screw the nut on until the hub got tight, and then backing it off a quarter turn, but that was pretty unscientific.
@davidjacobs8558
@davidjacobs8558 4 жыл бұрын
@@gkelly941 yes, you tighten it, untill the hub doesn't turn freely, then back off quarter turn by quarter turn, until it starts to turn freely. that's where you want it.

you can buy press for less than $200 at Harbor Freight. or you can ask local auto shops to press it for you for nominal charge. or auto parts stores may let you borrow the tool for free.

@autodocuk

Thank you for your feedback ! In whole, the replacement procedure is similar, but there can be differences in design. Therefore, we need more car data to tell you more exactly, how to carry out the replacement. Best regards, Autodoc.

While I totally love your videos for the accuracy of your work, the video quality and the way they are recorded, for this job I need to make some remarks: You did everything ALMOST right up to the point where you re-installed the hub. I say ALMOST because you should have removed the protection shield as well and have cleaned the seat inside (this is how I do it). I love the fact that you are using a press (this is the correct way of installing bearings). Now... The way you tightened the nut is very (VERY!!!) wrong. The whole life of the new bearings, as well as the precision of the steering sits in the play, which you have NOT addressed. Also, you should have added "a small amount" of grease into the cup before attaching it. For future work I will disclose how to do it THE RIGHT WAY: You attach the hub with the bearings with NO grease at all and tighten the nut until it allows a play of 0.0001 of an Inch (0.002 of a millimeter) using a machinists gauge on a magnetic mount. You make a sign on the spindle and the nut on the very precise spot. NOW AND ONLY NOW you pack your bearings with grease, add "a little amount" to the cap and put everything back with the nut tightened at the marked sign. I see many people doing this MOST IMPORTANT step the wrong way, ending-up in early failing bearings. The reason for this being the fact that the play needs to be between metal to metal, not between metal, grease and metal. During operation the grease will become very thin and the play will be out of spec. Again, I love your videos but there is always a learning curve for anyone. P.S. Guys, avoid all those self-proclaimed "doctors" or "experts", who in fact are clowns who don't have tools and hammer bearings, ball joints and so on... This guy here does excellent work, even if I had my remarks :)

The gauge kit sells for about $25 at HFT. it's the gauge and the magnetic mount - they come as separate parts. You will do one of two things if you won't use those: 1.) You will get vibrations in your steering if to loose or 2.) You will fry the bearing if to tight. Take my word for it and good luck.
@A.Dude.
@A.Dude. 7 жыл бұрын
Basically everything is covered already... Keep it clean, no sand or dust or any other kind of dirt. Use the best bearings money can buy (your money that is), use the best grease and don't overdue with grease. Take the car out on the freeway and focus on vibrations in your steering wheel; if you get vibrations, you need to go back to tightening (redo the tightening procedure). If you don't have any vibrations and the wheel spins nicely when turned by hand, you did a GREAT JOB. Good luck and let us know how it worked out.

Don't worry, they will seat alright; there is no way to over-due something there since everything has limiting grooves. You're going to enjoy your drive with new bearings better then with old one; never be sorry for an UN-necessary replacement. Be safe!

can it be done with no press?
@autodocuk
@autodocuk 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately, without using a press you can damage your part and the repair costs and part replacement will be increased. We recommend that you use a press, which allows you to make a qualitative part pressing.Best regards, Autodoc.

Holy Moly. 8:30. The fellow performing this "service" does not know how to pack a bearing with grease. And, 10:50, he does not know how to properly set the runout of a bearing (hint: use a dial indicator). When properly serviced and set, W210 front bearings will last the lifetime of the car (hundreds of thousands of miles). But if you follow these "instructions," don't expect your new bearings to last very long.

Wow I always thought Mercedes was cutting edge in engineering. I thought all manufactures transitioned to press fit bearings by the 1990s. Yes these old style bearings are easier to service, but the press fit bearings will to last a lot longer. My 2001 VW has only had one bearing replace at 110k miles. Not to bash Mercedes, because I have owned a 240D. I was always amazed on how much better the quality of the parts were than other manufacturers. Well built, but had a gutless engine.

Just saying, there's NO WAY the hub will just slide off like that. 99.9% of the time it's stuck. They probably used a hub puller to get it off. But didn't include it in the video

Thank you for your comment! The hub puller is not necessary to use for this car, cone type bearings are easily dismantled from the axle. Best Regards, Autodoc team

This is all wrong and not the way to grease bearings, not the right way to remove races, and definitely not the way to adjust the play on the bearings. How much grease was measured? How much grease was placed in the hub, and how much was placed in the cover. The video is very misleading.
