It's weird, even after like 12 years of driving stick every day, I still have some days where I just can't shift smoothly to save my life...and other days where I feel like God Of The Shift and everything just clicks. I live for those good days.

Yes! I’ve only been driving stick for a couple of months but I’m an Uber driver so I get plenty of time behind the wheel. On days where I’m the God of the Shift, I wish my passengers would comment and tell me how awesome I’m shifting but of course they never do. They’re buried in their phones and could not care less. 😂😂😂

Hi Jay millard - look in your owner's manual for the recommended rev for 1 to second gear. There is a recommendation there, which will work as a starting point. Also, experiment with lower revs. What is suggest is ascending revs as you move up in the gears. In my Honda with a 2.0L engine I've shifted 3 gears before getting through an intersection. The faster you get through the gears, the better fuel mileage you're going to achieve. All the best, Cheers Rick

My teacher taught me to pretend you're pulling up in first when you switch to second, so let out the clutch slowly while feeding in the throttle. Helped me alot. No idea if it's good or bad for the car but it's reallly smooth compared to just shifting normally.

Hi Arvid Ooms - that is great advice. Yes, bring the clutch out to the friction point and then control the pedal through that approximately one inch where the two plates in the clutch are coming together - as you said. And like you said, as your moving the clutch through the friction zone (biting) start giving throttle. All the best, Cheers Rick

I love that the rest of the world didn’t abandon the manual transmission like we’re in the process of doing in the US. I drive a manual for plenty of reasons, most important of which is that I like to drive. I gotta say, it’s blowing my mind thinking about having to select gears with my left hand. I don’t think it would be easy to retrain. Great video and spot on. The more “smooth” you want your shifts, the more wear you can potentially impart upon your clutch pack. The harder shifts may be a quicker transition from engaged to disengaged but that abusive might be felt on other parts of the drivetrain (ie universal joints etc). When I’m alone it’s not as big a deal, but I am definitely more conscious of my shifts when I have passengers. Especially if their heads are bobbing back and forth.

Hey, man! I've been driving for more than a year now but I felt the whole time that I'm switching gears wrong. I guess my driving instructor failed to explain it right to me. All the videos that I watched concentrate on basics which I already know, but your video opened my eyes on what I was doing wrong. I tried this evening and I can't say that I made it right from the first try, but I think I've figured out what is the right way to do it so now I just need to practice a bit. Anyway, thank you very much, great video! For other starters, here is my mistake: after pushing the clutch pedal I stepped on the gas pedal a little bit and tried to manually fix the revs on the right point to switch gears. Sometimes I got it, sometimes not (after long practice I usually fitted the revs right), but the main problem is that I stayed much longer with detached clutch than if I would do it like this video explains. Hence more time without proper control of the car; longer shifts; slower acceleration; increased clutch wear and so on. You better learn the proper way of shifting gears because it's way harder to overcome your bad habit.

I’ve been driving for over twenty years but my manual for a week. At first I was terrified of stalling and having people honk at me but at 75 I just restart the car and not let it get to me. I’m getting there, it’s just great to have a car again. I had to give up my car with the pandemic and then recently someone gave me this stick shift and I love it. I kind of feel like if I can do this I can do anything.

I drive a 2004 Honda Civic Si, I've noticed while upshifting, the lower the RPM the smoother it shifts. Example Accelerating in 1st, I rev until about 3k RPM, clutch in, wait a second for the RPM to go down to 2k and it slides into 2nd perfectly.

Yup, that's called rev matching. When you change gears the speed the engine is spinning with the transmission changes, because with the clutch pressed youre disengaging the transmission and engine from the wheels. When shifting up, let the rpms fall, every car is different so you'll need to play around with the amount. When shifting down, you want to add a bit of gas with the clutch pressed in. That will raise your rpm to match engine speed to wheel speed, making a smooth transition.

Yeah for a 4-cylinder that would be the perfect shifting procedure, but with a V8 you would rub up to about 4000 and try to shift at around 3000 or 2500. Any lower than that then the engine will starve for RPM's

Good luck with getting used to it man, one thing that I wish I knew when I learned was that when releasing the clutch, the speed at which you do it doesn't really matter until you get to the biting point. You can release it quick just be slower when you're in that point and you're good; that should make upshifting a lot quicker.

I dun goofed. Had 4 minors and 2 majors. Both majors were stupid mistakes that I wouldn't usually make. You are probably wondering what i did wrong. To put it simply, I was too nice. I stopped on the left turning left lane to give way to an oncoming right turner. Obviously I had priority and it was very stupid and dangerous but the road confused me. Mean little road. The second was for a "meeting in the road" where both forward and oncoming lanes merge into a single file give-way system. I messed up my gear change and therefore was unable to give-way at the give-way. Another shitty road. There goes £106. *sigh* That's a lot of money to me considering i am a student. Student being the universal euphemism for broke ass mofo!

One thing I want to comment on is also applying gas the right amount for whether you are accelerating or cruising at the same speed. If you are accelerating the force of the car is pushing you into the back of the seat. When you push the clutch in you stopped that push for a moment but not enough to feel like you are engine braking. So when you are applying the gas you would want to smoothly apply the throttle again to get the weight transition to be smooth.

I daily drive a 2023 Subaru WRX. 1st to 2nd is tricky in my car, especially when the car is cold. I find you gotta be pretty perfect with the clutch to get it smooth. I'm used to the car now so I usually get it pretty smooth but there's times I still have trouble with it. It's like I'm playing a guessing game when I'm shifting from 1st to 2nd. Lol. Love the car and I'm happy with it but I will agree with people who say 1st to 2nd is tricky in the car.

Shifting is by feel and can depend on the temperature of the gear oil. Being smooth is about clutch release and matching the right gear to the road speed, sometimes get the clutch to match revs, sometimes blip and match like when you want to come back a gear to accelerate or come back a gear and you can’t get the brakes to slow the car enough. It helps if you know how the gears and clutch work and realise sometimes the gears and wheels drive the engine (going down gears) and sometimes the engine drives the gears and wheels (when you’re accelerating).

To put it simply you want the clutch to be released as close to the required RPM as possible. So when you go up a gear you want to release the clutch as your RPM goes down to where it should be for that speed. For example in my car if I went from second gear to third gear at 80km/h then in second gear that would be at around 5-6K rpm but for third gear that is only about 4K rpm so the smoothest shift would be one where I release the clutch as the rpm lowers and is getting close to 4K rpm. And it works in the other direction if you want to downshift then you want to (between gears) use the accelerator to increase your rpm so in the example above but in the other direction (third to second at 80km/h) I would be at around 4K rpm in third and while shifting to second I would put my foot on the accelerator to bring the rpm up to around 5K that way the clutch isn't having to slow your wheels to increase engine rpm making it smoother.
@TheLondonCyclist

I just use the mph indicator. 1-10 = 1st, 10-20 = 2nd and 20-30 = 3rd and I do this for downshifting from 30, too. So when o hit around the 22mph mark going down, I'll shift to 2nd.

No need to ge timing your clutch release thats too much work, people should learn to rev match with throtle, its easy and in time you can do it just by the sound of engine. Shift and as you release clutch add a bit of gas and it should be as smooth as automatic. Upshift or downshift always use a bit of throtle to revmatch and after a bit of practicing it becomes second nature and you dont even have to think about it at all it becomes as natural as breathing, at least thats how my father taught me and it works perfectly for me, listen to engine because nothing can tell you better when and how to shift than a sound of engine. The car is speaking to you dont ignore it

The problem is, when you're accelerating in the first gear e.g you will force a kick forward due to the clutch suddenly stops the acceleration. You can switch the gear as smoothly as you can, in the end you have to be careful and the clutch and the gas pedal especially in the lower gears you mentioned. In the upper gears the problem isn't there, at least you don't have HP-MONSTER ^^

It really all depends on how many RPMs you give it. You can go from first to second pretty quick as long as you're not slamming on the throttle. And when I'm driving at a slow rate of speed like you're doing, I would rarely go any higher than 4th gear. I may not go no higher than 3rd gear if the speed limit is below 30 miles an hour. But I have a 03 Mach 1 and they run better at high RPMs

Basically when u put the clutch in the revs drop then when you change gear let it out slow then when the revs rise back up you can let it out all the way, then when you get good you will just do it without even thinking. More commonly the problem with jerky gears is 1st to second, I’ve alway changed through my gear pretty fast and I basically change to second as quick as I can which I’ve never had jerky problems when doing that

Great video! I've got my 6th lesson in a few hours, the clutch and gear change is the one I'm not massively confident on, I don't know if it is being left handed? I've passed my theory test so feel I'm getting somewhere, have encountered some unexpected hazards and have had to react quickly and guess that's part and parcel of driving, has been like a baptism of fire! Practice makes perfect and better late than never with learning to drive as I'm 37, felt like an old fogey compared to All the young ones in the theory test centre!

Shifting for the most part goes well but my main issue is that when I shift into 2nd it's like it loses momentum for a second or two. I can see it because the car behind me gets really close. It makes starting in front of a car with automatic gearbox a pain in the backside because they just zoom off with no care in the world.

Lol like when I'm in my automatic Tacoma, and an old manual mini truck is in front of me, they have that delay in shifts with an already slow vehicle. I try to take off quick with my other vehicle that is manual, but then it's harder to shift smoother into 2nd which I like doing.

Here is a TLDR for people if ya need it: try to learn how much your revs change at each gear, and try to have the clutch at the bite point when they are at the point at which the rpms match the gears rpms.

Rev match! When your press the gas, the engine speeds up, and the wheels will follow when the clutch is engaged (no foot on clutch). When you press in the clutch, you disengage the engine from the wheels. When you shift up, from 1 to 2, for example, the engine will naturally drop in rpm. You want the rpm to match, which takes practice. If you drive 15 mph in first gear at 3k rpm, when you press the clutch and shift to 2nd, your rpm will change, even at the same 15 mph. It might drop from 3k to 2k rpm, depending on the car.what you want to do for a smooth ride is slowly release the clutch when the rpm has falled the correct amount. When you shift down, for example from 4th to 3rd, if you're going 35mph at 3k rpm, and want to pass the person in front, you would press in the clutch, shift down into the proper gear, (in this scenario 3rd) and give a bit of gas to bring your rpm up to the correct amount. Let's say around 4k to 4.5k rpm. This will put you in the engines "power band" which is the area in which the engine is more responsive to acceleration. This will allow you to speed up and make the pass in much less time than staying in a low rpm in a high gear. All of this happens in one smooth continuous motion, which will take some practice to get the hang of. A good rule of thumb with manual transmission is that the lower the gear, the quicker you can accelerate, at the expense of fuel economy. On a highway, stay in higher gears unless you need to pass or take an exit. On twisty roads, stay in the apropriate gear for the speed youre going. You dont want to stall your car going around a 15mph corner in 5th gear. You would shift down to second and be in your power band so the car is more responsive. Hope this gives you a good baseline to learn from! I'm no professional, but I love to help people especially those eager to start driving manual!

Reduce engine load with throttle. Release throttle momentarily before depressing clutch but not so long that the car experiences engine braking. Move shifter smoothly so you don’t get the ‘notchy’ feeling through the shifter. Don’t release clutch pedal too fast (count to 2) and don’t over apply the throttle before clutch is fully re-engaged. Thats the basics. You’ll work rest out depending on your car. Practice away from traffic. Go find a quiet industrial estate or somewhere outside of urban areas. And if you need this video in the first place, your not ready for passengers or driving in wet weather/night time.

I have a question.. when I see people drive a manual, when they shift gears their rpm still go at a normal pace. So let’s say I’m in second gear shifting to third, do I let off the accelerator hit the clutch shift to third ease off the clutch then hit the gas again? Or do I shift while still on the accelerator?
@darkside7382
@darkside7382 7 жыл бұрын
Funny thing is I don' struggle with dowshit, I litterally downshit when I go slow enough. I go down to third when I'm around 23-25mph, and go to 2nd when I'mat around 11-13. And it shifts really smoothly. Upshifting on the other hand is sometimes smooth and other times not!

I love getting that hp boost from first to second in my Mustang. I do it everytime and it's so satisfying. I've mastered that and the hp boost probably could be compared to the acceleration of a hypercar. Just for a second then it goes back to normal.
@12kasper21
@12kasper21 5 жыл бұрын
That acceleration is caused by the 2 plates inside the clutch, one is going way faster than the other and by dumping the clutch like that you'll wear those plates out like crazy, but I'm really proud you mastered your little technique, I hope you know how to get your transmission and clutch out of your car!

Really interesting, but I have a question. I was taught to achieve smooth transition by depressing the throttle and releasing the clutch at the same rate, simultaneously, and it works well. For upshifts you seem to be saying to rev-match and release the clutch without any throttle involvement. I understand the theory for this, but I'm just wondering if what I was taught is a 'bad habit' or just a marginally slower method of achieving the same result?

My biggest problem is i forget to use blinkers when turning and when changing to a certain gear after a while of driving i forget in what gear i was so i can sometimes shift instead of third to like fifth gear because of that, and there goes my negative points. I’m pretty awful so far at driving manual. Driving is one of my least favorite things to begin with. I live in massachusetts where most of the people are always assholes in a “hurry” somewhere or just can’t drive. I’m not the best driver myself or fastest learner and trying to learn has been one of the hardest things ive ever done. I can climb trees, operate a bucket truck, bucket lift, dingo, Vermeer, chainsaws, pesticide application rigs, backup trailers down tight spaces no problem and acquired all that easily enough. And I’m not trying to brag because I’m pretty sure if I can learn those things most people can. So go out and be the best you; get certified, get paid. Back on topic, driving stick seems impossible for me. It doesn’t help I’m learning in my employers company truck on some backroads which puts me always on edge. My brain can’t seem to process driving so differently and I constantly take my eyes off the road. Panic starts to set it and I will skip a gear then have a mind blank. Stall constantly whenever I have to stop. I do good when I’m going for the most part but can’t seem to slowdown/downshift or stop at all. Revving the gas after putting the clutch in to downshift so I can slow down feels so unnatural. I’m weary driving the truck so I’m trying to watch the road but I also can’t ever seem to find the right gear so I’m always looking over. My shifts are slow and harsh. I’m hoping I learn sooner rather than later. Any personal tips will help from anyone. Thanks for the video and bless you and everyone else

In other words: Start to learn to drive and be jerky, then as you practice your gear changes will become smoother. Only when you get your license should you concern yourself with rev matching on downchanges and even then it's not critical unless your gearbox doesn't have syncromesh, which is the case with 0.0001% of cars. There you go, all the wisdom you need for changing gears smoothly.
