I've never changed an oil filter with a reusable housing before so this video really helped me understand what needs to be done
@mikefajer47676 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the helpful step by step. To address some of the other comments, my 2007 Rav TAKES 6.4 quarts of oil. The oil pan drain plug needs a 14 mm socket. The Toyota dealership mechanics overtightened the oil port cover when they changed the oil last time, so I had the same problem as quikgt. I solved it by tightening the cartridge assembly a bit and then trying to remove the port cover. When reassembling, torque the cartridge assembly to 20 foot pounds, then torque the cover to 10 foot pounds. The next time I change the oil, I won't have that problem again. Good luck!

I like the inclusion of the short hose attached to the drain piece for the oil filter. This is the only video I've seen that demonstrates how this indeed does eliminate the mess. There was one other video that used a beverage bottle instead of a hose that was also very effective. •No new crush washer (or o-ring as you called it)? •No helpful torque specs? •Used a pick to remove o-ring (Toyota says not to)? •Start up the engine and check for leaks?

Even cheap oil nowadays is decent oil. I use Walmart SuperTech for my Rav. Good oil at a good price and change 2x annually.
@rightlanehog31513 жыл бұрын
@@mannarmylie4195 I will stick to the same position I had 3 years ago when I posted this comment. The 5 year factory warranty on my humble Corolla engine expired in 2010. For the last 11 years I have been doing once a year oil changes with Amsoil Signature Series and their long life EA oil filters. The engine still runs perfectly and I have saved substantial amounts of money and valuable time by using the best oil on the market. As a bonus, my waste oil production is a fraction of what it would have been with second rate oil. Toyota and Amsoil, a match made in automotive heaven.

Just got finished changing the oil and filter. Unfortunately Toyota dealership service pros over tightened the filter drain plug and I ended up unscrewing the whole assembly. I could not put the top small O-ring on because of that. I replaced the large O-ring and the new filter on and twisted the filter canister with new filter back into place.

This is how I been changing oil on my rav4 v6 the last 7 years as well. No special filter wrench is need and much more convenient. I never bother to mess with the filter drain plug and the small o ring.

Our Toyota dealer also tightens oil filters and oil filter housings to insane levels. Maybe it’s to keep DIYers from doing it? Self contained oil filters only need to be hand tight. I also don’t bother with the drain plug on these filter assembly designs.

Actually, although I agree with you, the earlier models may have allowed for 5W-30 conventional and New York City taxicabs years ago use to get 500,000 miles out of their engines on conventional oil. I would expect that they used 3,000 mile change intervals though.
