I've changed the oil on my cars for more than 50 years. I taught my wife soon after we married, and she was religious about doing so on her own car which she herself maintained for over 15 years. She did the neatest, cleanest oil changes I'd ever seen -- never spilled a drop, and somehow, she never got dirty, either. Even better, this got her accustomed to looking around under the hood, and she wanted to know what the other parts were too. She immediately noticed anything amiss and was even able to fix some things herself, like a cracked hose causing a vacuum leak. I strongly encourage women to learn this type of job. A great confidence builder. My wife became much more informed about cars starting in this way.

Real world experience here.... my wife wanted to learn same. She did the oil change and everything seemed fine. Then we discovered the car was leaking oil at the drain plug. I checked it was tight and that wasn't the issue. I suspected something was amiss with the drain plug gasket. Took it to the dealership as it was winter and I don't do oil changes in the icy and wet driveway. They discovered the drain plug bolt was cross threaded. There's a certain amount of "normal experience" with tools, nuts and bolts that a person should have before they do their own oil change. We needed a new oil pan, which cost about 700 dollars with labour and taxes to replace. She has decided I should do the oil changes from here out.

I have changed my own oil for the last 25 years straight, and before that whenever I could change it myself (when I had a place like a garage in a home where I could do it). The reason why I do that is because the last thing I want to do is have the oil changed like a "pro." Most new cars these days offer free oil changes for the first 2 years or so, but I personally would just pass on that. The fewer times a "pro" touches your car, the longer it will last. Even at dealers, they usually hire a bunch of high school kids for the oil change area.

The CCN is obviously a very skilled A+ Toyota mechanic. What I like even more about him is he explains things in a calm common sense way for DIYers. There is never a hint of him being condescending or showing an ego that a lot of mechanics with his skill level would have. He'll also be honest about repairs / maintenance on Toyotas of where you should draw the line as a DIYer of what you can do and when to leave a job up to the professionals. I have a tacoma, a Highlander and a Rav4, and have learned watching these videos how I can confidently do many maintenance tasks on these vehicles on my own.

FWIW, I've been using the same oil plug gasket for the last 70,000 miles. No leaks. If you cut off the top of a quart oil bottle or 2 liter soda bottle, it makes a nice funnel for adding in the new oil without spilling any. The idea of putting the oil filler cap on the hood latch is great, as is the advice of tightening things to spec (after a few oil changes, you'll not even need the torque wrench any more). Great video, Car Care Nut!

Do not forget to check for leaks and oil pressure after startup. It can happen to anyone, but especially if you're not experienced. Gaskets can be bad, faulty encased filters and improperly tightened oil plugs, etc. I did this work for 5.5 years and have seen it all, especially on used cars that others had touched before me.
@njsongwriter2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it can happen to anyone. I know. I've been changing my own oil for 57 years. About two years ago I got distracted during an oil change. Because of that I ended up pouring three quarts of oil through the engine before realizing I forgot to put the drainplug in. Whoops! My wife said, "I'll bet you won't do that again." I told her she was wrong. It wasn't until after 55 years of not doing it that it finally happened. I told her the evidence shows that I'm more likely to do something like that as I get older. I don't think I should try making my own video unless someone else is running the camera. I can't multi-task like I once did. A man's got to know his limitations.

I used to straddle a shallow ditch in my yard, with my VW beetle, so i could lay in it and change my oil 😁 ; no ramps needed. 👍 There's always a way to get it done yourself. I use a shower curtain liner underneath the car, and it catches all drips. When you're done, wipe up the drips, and fold it up to use the next time. I've got to buy the ramps and a drain pan again, but it will save me money in the long run. I hate paying somebody else to do something i can do myself 🙃

Great tip of putting the oil cap in the visible location. Bought a brand new 1989 Camry LE V6 from a Toyota dealer in Alhambra, CA. Without knowledge of car maintenance as a student, took the Camry in for the first 3000 miles oil change. Oil was all over my garage when came back. Went back to the dealership and they claimed the oil filler cap was missing and would charge me for another oil change plus $3.25 oil cap. My girlfriend (my wife now) and I insisted that no one had ever touched this car during the last 24 hours of their oil change. Finally this dealer didn't charge and did the engine cleaning free of charge. Long story short, this car was traded in for a cab forward 1993 Dodge Intrepid (looked nice at that time), where our nightmare began.

I'd like to add a couple tips... Let your engine warm up to operating temp, then cool down a bit, so you drain more contaminants which come out with the draining oil, plus, you have freshly distributed oil to the internal parts and avoid a "dry" start. I also like to wipe down where the drain plug seats on the pan, just to be sure all the dirt is removed. I also "chase" the old oil with a quart of new which removes a little more crud from the pan.

Ooh! One thing I forgot that I heard about on another channel that I can't remember... I'm getting old. Anyway, it was about putting the keyless fobs far enough from the hybrid cars when changing the oil. It is possible to accidentally leave the system "ready" as we drain the oil with the system sitting quietly. Then the ICE starts!
@TheCarCareNut3 жыл бұрын
That’s actually very true with hybrids. Still remember the last junior mechanic who’s doing their first oil change on a Prius and that happened. It sucks when the engine starts as the engine oil is draining. Another one is remote starts that are not installed properly and don’t have a hood switch.

I do sorta believe if your jacking equipment and stands are a little sketchy and the time or effort it takes to properly dispose of the used oil and filter for the price its almost quicker and simpler to have Toyota or your trusted repair shop perform that maintenance especially with the hassle of properly disposing of the used oil.

Correct. Our first oil change at Toyota dealership where we purchased our Tacoma was overfilled by 30oz. Service manager found the new hire tech used all 7 quarts, over filling by 30oz. Good thing I checked when home and next morning after 12 mile drive from dealership to home. I did plenty of research on dealerships and what qualifications are required for position to change oil. They will hire you without any experience, they will provide on the job training. Your expensive vehicle will be maintained by a beginner tech most every time from what I have read online. I'm not comfortable knowing that. Just my personal experience with our dealership.
@wholeNwon3 жыл бұрын
Disposal is free at local auto parts stores. I go every few years for that purpose. I NEVER trust any dealership to change my car's oil and filter and always do the job myself. If you want a very long, trouble-free service life from your car's engine, I'd strongly suggest that, if at all possible, you do the same. And check the underside of the filler cap. It should be relatively clean not encrusted with grime or sludge. If it is, there's a problem that should be addressed...oil changes too infrequent, bad filters, perhaps a defective PCV valve.

Thank you for another great video! I have a 2012 Camry XLE Hybrid which has the 2.5L 2AR-FXE engine and canister type filter system with the drain plug (04152-YZZA1 oil filter). On the 2AR-FXE engine, the oil filter canister installs vertically as opposed to horizontally like the one in your video. I was very surprised at how difficult it was to remove the filter canister from the engine block. The first couple of turns were so difficult I was sure the canister must have been cross threaded into the engine by the previous oil changer. (I was using a 10 inch 1/2 inch drive ratchet & Assenmacher Specialty Tools AST640 removal tool). However when I removed the canister there was no damage and installing went smoothly. I can see how many people in other forums report their removal tool (the aluminum ones) cracking/breaking. I had no issues with the AST640 removal tool aside from it being stuck on the canister afterwards, but I was able to remove it easily with a plastic trim pry tool. With that said, I am considering spending the money and getting the OEM tool which, from your video, appears to be made of steel. When I was removing the canister from the engine (I did not use the drain plug to drain it first) I did have some oil splash out, which may have been my fault. I think going forward I will use the drain plug to be on the safe side and avoid the mess. (By the way, for anyone who has the drain plug type canister filter, the torque value on the drain plug is 10 ft lbs and like the other canister filters, the torque value for it is 18 ft lbs). Thanks again!

Great, simple, straight forward. I'd love to see a full set of videos on 4Runner maintenance. There's some good ones out there, but there's no 'one stop shop' to find all the good ones.

Make sure you lubricate your 12mm skid plate bolts when you take it off to take the oil filter out. Also some Tacomas and 4runners use a cover under the drain plug too, personally I wouldn't put that in so you can catch an oil leak sooner, but make sure you lubricate those 12mm bolts also if you put that cover back

I have an avalon. I usually put some oil in the filter since it's vertical. I usually put in 6 quarts, start it, let the filter completely fill, then check again. Usually takes a little more, bit never full capacity. I think that's from some old residual oil, etc. I'm very careful to not over fill. Anyway, thats just some observations. I like your videos. Keep up the good work.

Hi. Thanks again for the video. I recently purchased a 2010 Toyota Carrola S. I've done many oil changes! Not on a Toyota. I knew if I watched this video, I would get the correct procedures to do it myself, on my Toyota.

Understanding that some oils have better cleaners in them etc... I decided to try Amsoil 100% synthetic 5w-30 on my mom's '07 Highlander Hybrid thinking it might help clean the seals better and stop the leak. It's been about a year, but taking measurements after it sits overnight, it's greatly improved. Toyota said it had rear main leak.

Adding a few ounces of AT-205 helps the seals tighten up.

My dealership in Canada refused to sell me the oil filter tool. I had to buy it from a regular parts store. It works but it's not a perfect fit. 😕 Another point I would like to make - doing an oil change on Yaris is way easier than Corolla. 1. I don't even lift Yaris 2. I cat start spinning the filter from the top which is easier. Love Yaris!

I never have opened the oil drain on the oil canister and always felt a little guilty about that, not any more. Thanks Car Care Nut!

I always use the drain and change the o-ring, mostly because it makes less of a mess. I get made fun of for it at the dealer because guys say it takes too long, but I don't see how. I just keep a plastic drain tool in my oil bucket and install it when I remove the oil drain plug. By the time I walk to the parts department to get the new filter and then walk back, the filter and oil pan are both drained. Takes at most an extra 60 seconds.

I own the Motivx canister drain tool with the clear hose. It screws on, you wait for it to drain the canister. And wait. It does make less of a mess, but it adds a LOT of time to my oil changes. I might try it his way the next time.

With your videos I just finished transmission fluid, coolant, tc and rear diff on my 2014 Rav4, I saw bottom of oil filter and looks very easy to reach, so probably will start doing my own oc! Local shops/dealer would have charged $550 for these! Brake fluid is last one I need to do. Great videos! Thank you!

I do a Trans dump and run every 4-5 engine oil change. Once you do it a few times its easy. My Rav4 has 215000 and runs & shifts as good as the day i got it.

@@Jimmy_Jim_Jim_1234 so every 4-5 oil change you would do a transmission fluid change?

@@nmjhd1234 Yes, but not a total flush. The dealerships have a pumping machine for that. The shop mechanics manual has a step by step procedure. I tow trailers every so often. So maintenance is essential to make it last.

Thanks for the great video. Note to future self for 2021 Tundra 5.7 V8. Drain plug 30 ft-lb. Filter canister 18 ft-lb. Put the oil fill cap on the hood latch so you don't forget to add oil. 6 months or 5,000 miles. Mobile 1 0/20 full synthetic.

I've changed a lot of oil on a lot of vehicles and farm equipment but I've always checked the oil level when cold because to to do so when the engine is fully warmed up means potentially a lot of oil hasn't yet drained into the crankcase! Hence, you tend to overfill when measuring dipstick oil level when hot, not the other way around. Oil expansion when hot compensates for this but even after waiting several minutes for warm oil to settle, I find it the level typically lower than a cold measurement. And if the amount of (cold) oil in the crankcase is to the manufacturer's specification, then why would it be considered overfilling once the engine fully warms up?? Now I notice you said nothing about warming up an engine before draining the oil. Maybe it's not necessary but, if nothing else, it does speed up the draining process. Also raising the front of the vehicle for ease of access can surely affect the draining of oil - sometimes it helps drain more thoroughly, sometimes though it prevents the last of the oil in the pan from draining at all.

To “change your oil like a pro” (like a minimum wage employee at a dealership), you should drain the oil till “most of it is out”, and then torque the filter housing on with an impact wrench, so that it would take a gorilla to remove it. Refill the engine with the cheapest conventional oil you can find, because “the customer can’t tell the difference.” Make sure to spill oil all over the top of the engine because you’re too busy to be neat. THEN leave a huge mess under the car so that no one can tell if there is an oil leak or not. THAT’s why I do my own oil changes!
