This video really confused me - I have a fairly modern mountain bike, with a quick release front wheel, but after spending hours trying to puzzle how to tap the axle out, i realised it's actually still using cup and cone! I didn't think they'd used cup and cone on quick-release axles, if I knew they existed I wouldn't have had such difficulty working it out. Might have been worth mentioning!

'Banger' vid H as ever... for home mech some other ideas that are maybe safer (less chance of damaging hub/new bearings from not going in square) is to make your own press with threaded rod nuts and washers (or sockets). And can use sockets to drift bearings in, but also to drift second one out square (socket on a extension piece).

how does one figure out which bearings to buy? is there a standard, or is it just "take it apart and see, and then wait till replacements arrive"?
@AnotherMrLizard4 ай бұрын
There is no standard, if you have branded hubs you can generally look up the diagrams and it’ll show the bearings size. Otherwise yes pull apart and read the codes off the seals or remove and measure yourself.

If you can’t see slots for wrenches on the outside, odds are they just pull right off. (Can be very tough to pull off, depending on the wheel) If it’s a mavic wheel, you may need the mavic specific tool to unthread the end caps of the axle.

@gmbntech4 жыл бұрын
If they're 100% coming out, try using some penetrating solution to try and loosen them up. However that'll also do a number on any grease in and around the bearing so you'll have to make sure they're out out and you can clean the area before fresh grease and new bearings :)

@carbonsuicidemtb15834 жыл бұрын
I'd be careful knocking a bearing in on the axle, the end cap will push against the centre ring of the bearing and potentially damage the balls and races, leading to an "indexed" or grumbling bearing with a much shorter life

And then when that doesn’t work, don’t be surprised if the shop charges you triple to fix a seriously bodged hub. Had a guy come in to have square taper cranks removed a while back, easy job until he grinded the bolt to use a giant flathead to remove it.

@david945494 жыл бұрын
You pretty much just answered your own question, it needs to rotate well. There should be very little to no play between inner and outer race, if the bearing is loud and clunky when turning it's a no go, if it doesn't turn freely it's a no go

Easy to make your own press... should do a series on home made bike tools...though guessing park would not be a happy sponsor!🤔😬
@knott4me5614 жыл бұрын
Whilst making kit at home to use on your bike is very rewarding as well as economical it's really difficult for a mainstream KZbin Chanel to dive fully into this .sadly all it would take is one person to replicate the tool damage a hub etc and there comes in the liability side of things . In my situation i look after an entire bike clubs mountain bikes so it's paid dividends for me to invest in the right tools for the job and and over the years this now enables me to service the club's bike not only efficiently but very cost effective . So for eg if yoh have just even a small group of friends you all need your frame pivots changing at some point you could buy the RRP bearing press and then individually but the appropriate adapters for each bearings between you and often some of the adapters will cross over as for eg 6901 is a common pivot bearing and it's a great way to all learn even if one members is more competent than the others .

Everything functions properly kzbin.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of KZbin. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!

#AskGMBNTech Hi, I am building a new bike and I am looking at a yeti SB5+ frame and it says it can have a150mm of travel up front (forks) but I am curious to know what would happen if I were to put a 160mm of travel up front. Would you recommend it or not. Thanks
@garywinslow56074 жыл бұрын
Frosty-_-Man raised bottom bracket, stack height increases, reach decreases. Higher BB usually makes cornering less stable as bike is higher, stack height and reach are rider specific. Also, do Yeti warrant the frame with 160mm? Personally, for 10mm I wouldn’t bother. Minimal gains.

Hey Gmbn Tech why do we need to change mtb spokes?
@andrei37204 жыл бұрын
If theyre bent
@knott4me5614 жыл бұрын
Spokes over time can actually fatigue.so if your replacing the odd spoke on an aging wheelset and more spokes keep snapping it's time to get the wheel relaced
@darcyphillips704 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I have an issue with all the weight being placed on the spokes throughout removal and installation... no matter how gentle you are, this is still not ideal and this method also relies on the premise that the bearing comes out easily
@knott4me5614 жыл бұрын
If the surface supporting the spokes in that area was solid I'd agree with you but given the soft ish nature of the roll of tape and the fact Henry placed it at the end where there is a lot of strength it really isn't an issue and if the bearings don't come out easily then you have a bigger issue that where the spokes are being supported. Hub Bearings really shouldn't be that tough to remove even if neglected given there generally at least a 6902 or above in size they will tap out with a minimal amount of effort .
@joshuavezina19104 жыл бұрын
Most wheel builders will actually tap the spokes going outward with a mallet when building the wheel to release slack that will potentially come out later. I wouldn’t worry about spreading that force out over 8-9 spokes when the guy who built the wheel probably hit them all individually.

0:50 "if in doubt, look it up in your manual" - ...seriously? what manual? not everyone has a shiny new bike, many are second hand and may have been altered from stock, and as far as I can tell manufacturers give no flying pokes about archiving the original bike spec for you to even begin to research this. I've a box full of worn parts and I have absolutely no idea what they are, who even made them or where to start looking for replacements. Like bearings, what part am I looking for? or is there a generic bike front hub bearing that fits everything. These bike maintenance videos are great for showing you what's inside, but we don't have a magic parts fairy handing us a service kit with all the right bits, and that's a massive problem in trying to maintain a bike that's more than a month old. I can find more detailed repair information from the manufacturer of 40 year old IT equipment, than I can find just the brand name for the freehub of a 5 year old bike. I can't even get a paint code from them...

@joshuavezina19104 жыл бұрын
Discolouration is caused by heat transfer. Carefully inspect the rotors and make sure that they are not bent or losing material at the braking surface. It is perfectly normal for rotors to get discoloured, but only to a point. If they were starting to get very colourful, I would replace them. Dirt will not discolour a rotor.
