Thank you so much for your videos. Question: have you heard anything about using “odor bombs” in Prius Hybrid Plug-In vehicles… as in anything negative since I understand they have a ventilation filter in the vehicle for the battery system. Thanks!

@4:15 yes, it’s been put in the wrong way by the previous person, and of course, custom and practice is to simply copy what was done before. The arrows on the plastic casing cover, do show a DOWN flow. The problem is, oftentimes, even Toyota experts I have seen refer to the arrows on cabin filters as pointing UP as in upward. This must be true for some cars, but I think is mere coincidence, or fortunate, or whatever. Arrows pointing to the direction of airflow, is the priority. I’m about to do this job, and will expect to see the cabin filter correctly installed, IE the arrows on the previous filter, will be in accord with the arrows on Toyota’s compartment lid moulding. That is, arrows on both filter and Toyota plastic lid, point downwards, is what I expect to find…doing the job now…will write what I find…!…OK I have a Hengst filter to fit, with pictorial instructions. The AFTERMARKET previous filter was a ‘blueprint’ one I pulled out, and the arrows on it were such, it was inserted with them point UP. This I believe, is the WRONG way for an aftermarket filter, as they usually show the direction of AIRFLOW, and are not to do with Toyota trying to make it easier when fitting their cabin filter. The Hengst pictorial instructions (Made in Poland, an E2945) clearly show, in the TINIEST inset in a cartoon pic (literally 10mm x 10mm FFS), a diagram of an eye looking at two arrows and these arrows clearly point DOWNWARD, IE in the direction of AIRFLOW, not some other notional direction like Toyota does, to make fitting easier. End result: Following the Hengst pictorial instructions, and believing the arrows printed on their filter conform to their tiny inset diagram and show AIRFLOW direction, I am fitting the Hengst filter so the arrows point downward. The ‘garbage’ like seeds and bits of leaves and some occasional hair strand, are all on the TOP of the filter I pulled out. I deduce, believing all aftermarket filters depict AIRFLOW direction with their arrows, the old blueprint-made filter, was WRONGLY fitted to this Prius of mine. I am fitting the aftermarket Hengst cabin filter then, with the arrows pointing downward. The Owner’s manual, as shown in this youtube video kindly made by this producer, clearly uses UP as the convention, but that is for Toyota genuine cabin filters, and THOS HAVE ‘UP’ printed right beside the arrows. In other words, if you have a PROPER Toyota cabin filter to fit, you will have UP and an upward arrow /\ beside it, which does NOT show the direction of airflow, it is a convention to make fitting cabin filters that are real Toyota ones, easier. This would conform to the Owner’s Manual, which reinforces the ‘UP’ arrow convention. But I do NOT have a pukka genuine Toyota cabin filter, and Hengst in their diagram, and knowing which side of the cabin filter is the incoming air side (the top side as fitted, it’s protecting the fan from dust as well as the occupants), I am fitting it ARROWS DOWN because the arrows on the Hengst are not Toyota’s convention, but the direction of Airflow. SHORT VERSION: Pukka Toyota, follow the ‘UP’ and up arrow /\ convention, conforming to the handbook. NON-genuine part, aftermarket cabin filters, treat the arrows as meaning the direction of airflow, and that means the arrow is pointing DOWN in this case, because all the dust is caught on the topside, the UP side (Blueprint, Hengst and others I believe too, but check instructions). It’s just one of those things. This is to the best of my knowledge, I ain’t no genius but have rebuilt a few engines and been educated in engineering. Take care all.

Good job. Thumbs up. The only thing I would do is pay a $3 more and get one that's NOT made in CHINA. It's my understanding that the L on the plastic panel means it's for a vehicle with Left hand drive. (Steering wheel on the left. Not sure if that's true but it makes sense.)

Have always reused the filter after a thorough wash & dry as they are getting progressively expensive these days. Besides the original is made in Japan and of very high quality, with more pleats for minimal resistance. Stuff like this made in China, have always known to recycle dirty(need I say germy) linens from medical waste.

I’ve watched several videos and all of them say that the filter Arrow should point Up not down.
@njsongwriter3 жыл бұрын
Then the ones you watched were all wrong. You can't assume that your old cabin air filter was put in correctly and simply copy it. Air flow is NOT going up. Air flow is down. If you put the filter in with the air flow arrow pointing up then it's upside down. The ONLY time an arrow on a cabin air filter should point up is if it says "up" next to the arrow. All horizontally mounted cabin air filters with the blower motor mounted below the filter have downward air flow. Otherwise the blower motor would be full of dirt and debris. If it doesn't say up next to the arrow then the arrow indicates air flow direction and should point down. Another simple way to determine this is noticing how the dirt accumulates on top of the old filter which proves that dirty unfiltered air enters the topside of the filter and flows downward. Still not sure? Then remove the filter and turn on the blower. Then put your hand where the filter goes. Does it feel like it's blowing upward? Use a piece of string or tissue paper. They will be sucked downward. All the Toyota parts that say up on them have nothing to do with air flow. They are simply telling us which side goes up. So if your filter says "up" next to the arrow then of course it should point up. If it doesn't say anything next to the arrow (like on a WIX branded filter) then by default an arrow on an air filter indicates air flow direction. I've already emailed WIX to confirm this to be true.
@njsongwriter2 жыл бұрын
Consider this... The OEM Toyota brand filter should point up because it says "UP" on the filter next to the arrow. What if we could prove to you that "up" and "air flow" aren't the same? BOTH KINDS OF ARROWS ON ONE FILTER... UP & AIR FLOW... kzbin.info/www/bejne/npDOfaajm8Z_eZo Also see... kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWjIaqGCpbOchrs

Unfortunately, the filter was installed in the wrong direction. The filter has 2 arrows. They were pointing down. They should be pointing up. The rest of the video is correct. In spite of the error, it’s helpful.
@uli31199 ай бұрын
The installation is correct. Airflow goes from up to down. He installed with arrows pointing down. This is the correct direction. The opening is located right below the passengers wiper area. If airflow were upwards it would just be blowing it out the car and not into it.
