Great tip, I used it and improved on it. I ground the point off the screw, used a piece of heat shrink tubing to cover the threads and the “point”(that I ground off). Now it’s comfortable in the hand & safe.

You are right I have never seen anyone else talk about how to swap them, and no surprise Ididn't get any info or instructions with this spindle kit. Thanks Paw Paw

The 1/8 inch collet my mill came with comes out fairly easy like you show, but the new 1/4 inch collet has to be removed with a dowel I ground down to size and a hammer. Pressing the 1/8 in collet in is also easy, pressing the 1/4 in collet into place requires squeezing it in with the vise...
@PawPawsWorkShop10 ай бұрын
It sound like it may be in mm and not actually a 1/4” collet
@starhawke38010 ай бұрын
Im not sure about the exterior diameter, but the inside diameter fits the 1/4 bits I have dead on. I ordered a second cap for the collet to live in permanently, so it wont be a problem anymore. Wouldnt it be great if you could buy a tool, and then never have to spend more money on that tool to keep it working?@@PawPawsWorkShop

You also need to tilt the collet in correct direction... ie find the direction where the collet tilts the greatest then push it out with the screw head as per video or something similar (I use a flat head punch).. until I did this (ie found the right direction to tilt the collet) I couldn't get mine out.. after I learned that the collet NEEDS to be tilted in correct direction, it is now routinely easy.. do the same in reverse for insertion.. hope this helps!

***** IMPORTANT NOTE***** A lot of people don't understand that the nut is actually machined offset inside. When you push a collet out you need to push a little sideways and it will easily come out with or without the screw. If you try to push evenly on the collet it won't move and that's the way it is designed. When I first got my collet set I tried to very lightly tap the collet straight into the nut and that ended with me having to buy a replacement collet. Sideways is the only pressure you ever need to remove an er collet! Thanks for posting and take care!

I don't know if they sell the bottom nut separately but I have the 3018 SE and the 4040 XE. I found it easier/quicker to keep one with the 1/8th inch collett and the other with the 1/4 inch collett and swap them as necessary. I had been struggling popping the old colletts out, maybe because I wasn't sure I was doing it right by applying pressure with a large screwdriver. Your videos are always very informative.

Just angle the collet and apply pressure outwards to it. It will slip out of the locking ring. No need for a screw head and risk damaging the collet.

It’s friction fit. If you take the nut off and the collet does not come with it, then it is stuck. You may try a little WD 40.

Technically you do not need to use the screw. You do, however, need to move the center part all the way to the side using some pressure to release it
