Your Honda Civic’s oil filter helps trap and remove contaminants in the oil before it is recirculated throughout your vehicle’s engine. Changing your 2016-2020 Honda Civic’s oil and oil filter is a straightforward maintenance task that can improve your Honda's engine performance and longevity. Your Honda Civic’s oil filter should be replaced during each oil change, in addition to adding fresh oil. It’s recommended by most 2016-2020 Honda Civic owner’s manuals that you change your Civic’s oil and oil filter when the Oil Change Light illuminates on your dashboard, as your Honda is built with an oil life monitoring system that allows for variation in the oil change interval. Your Honda's service manual will detail the manufacturer’s maintenance intervals and the oil life indication system. A clogged oil filter or dirty oil can cause decreased engine performance, sputtering, metallic sounds from your Honda's engine, or may even cause the engine to seize. Our detailed instructions will help you perform an oil change on your Honda Civic.

Run the engine until it reaches operating temperature, or until the fan comes on… then turn off the engine.
Raise and support the front end.
Remove the under-car engine plate by turning the fasteners counterclockwise… and removing them. There should be eight of them.
Slide a drain pan into place under the drain bolt.
Use your ratchet and socket to remove the drain bolt… and let the oil run out completely.
Wipe any excess oil from around the opening… and off the drain bolt with a shop towel.
Discard the old washer… and reinstall the drain bolt with a new washer.
Tighten the drain bolt to 30 foot pounds.
Locate the oil filter… and use your filter wrench to loosen it.
Finish removing it by hand… and pour the oil from the filter into the drain pan.
Wipe down the area where the filter was threaded… and make sure the old o-ring came off with the filter.
Lubricate the new o-ring with fresh oil.
Thread the new filter into place by hand.
Once the o-ring is against the oil pan, tighten the filter to 9 foot pounds.
Open the hood… and locate the oil fill cap.

These step-by-step instructions and video detail how to replace the oil filter in a 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2020 Honda Civic, and these instructions will be similar for select 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 Honda Odysseys, as well as 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 Honda Accords. Replacing the oil and oil filter removes contaminants from the oil before it is used to lubricate and cool your car’s engine components. Dirty oil, low oil levels, and a clogged oil filter can all cause engine damage, so ensure you perform the oil change on your Honda Civic within 500 miles of the oil life indicator light appearing. Your 2016-2020 Honda Civic’s owner’s manual will detail the service interval information, but if you notice a dirty or clogged oil filter or reduced engine performance, you can perform an oil and oil filter replacements more often to ensure a smooth-running engine and long-lasting performance.

On my daughter's 2017 Civic, I didn't see the clips that hold the pan under the engine in the correct place, and I ended up installing, then removing all 8 fasteners and doing it twice. You need to hold the pan slightly aft of where it will end up, and slide it forward. This actually makes it easier to get the other fasteners started, since the pan is held in the proper place. Also, on her Civic, you hold the reset "stem" on the RH side of the instrument panel for 10 seconds, release it, and hold for another 5 seconds to reset the Oil Life indicator.

Hi! Great vid. I noticed some things that I wanna point out. I just have some recommendations for you. 1: you should wait for about 5-10 mins for the oil the cool down. I’d rather be safe than sorry. 2: You should always tighten the oil filter by hand. You shouldn’t need an oil filter wrench. Anyway have a good one!

If you want to avoid getting oily, the perfect tool for pulling the oil drain plug and any other bolt, nut, or screw (with the right adapters) is a cheap Chinese $30 cordless electric ratchet. They are indispensable, work as a normal ratchet, and do about 15 ft lbs on electric and have impact type hammers. You can't go wrong, I got a couple for the pit guys at an oil change center and they like them and they've lasted over a year.

I’ve never been able to figure out where to put the jack stands. I see the little metal piece on the side where I put the jack to lift the car, but the stand doesn’t fit while the jack is there and I can’t remove the jack because it’s holding the car up, so I’m not sure where to actually put the jack stand.

Yea, this is an issue for a lot of us. There is a jack point in the center of the car, but most jacks won't go in that far and or aren't low enough. The best thing is to just use some car ramps. I'm a big guy, 6 foot, 280 with a huge frame and very wide shoulders. It's a tight fit for me, i have to lay on my back and there is no turning on my side to see better, but it gets done.
@nathancoy8066
@nathancoy8066 3 жыл бұрын
Same. It drives me crazy. I use a small jack on one of those points, to get the car up enough to fit my big low-profile jack to the point in the center of the car behind the engine. Then I can get it WAY up and on two jack-stands. It's absolutely terrifying getting the car back down though!

When I DIY my oil changes, first I drive the car for about 5 minutes. It gets the oil warm (not HOT), so the oil flows easier when draining.

You missed a VERY important safety step: "Use stands on a hard, level surface eg concrete and avoid lifting on sloping ground." You did show them in the background but made no mention of their importance or their use. Another minor oversight: At 0:57 all screws holding the under-car engine plate that were not removed and placed in a container for easy recovery dropped out and scattered on the ground. That is not careful workmanship.
