It’s 2024 and this was a helpful video. The things I needed to see are, “how do I check the oil level?”, “what tools do I need?”, “where is everything located around the engine?”, “what are the specs of the engine: the torque for fasteners, the amount of oil, etc?”, and “how much more oil can I add when it’s at the middle fill line?” and this video accomplished pretty much all of it.

Thanks for the helpful video. One thing to add, put blocks or stoppers at the front wheels so the car doesn't roll forward. great job on the video.

Great video. Nice to see a video like this with a real DIYer, where you are doing the work in your driveway and you don't have every specialized tool known to man. That's how most of us do it so it's really nice to see that so people know you can do your own maintenance, even on a Porsche without all that fancy stuff. Well done!

Probably a good idea to use a funnel when refilling the oil so you don't spill in the trunk area. Also a torque wrench is a great idea.

One of best oil change vids I've seen. clear and comprehensive. only thing I would add is that its good to run the engine for just a few minutes (so that its slightly warm but not hot obviously) prior to changing the oil so that it drains easier and more completely...

Props to you for having the balls to change your own oil, as most people nowadays are too scared to. Beautiful Por-sha as well (correct pronunciation). Four pointers for next time: 1. Always unscrew the drain plug and filter housing and leave them off for the same amount of time for a proper drain. 2. USE A DAMN FUNNEL!! I almost had a panic attack that you were going to spill that 0W-40 all over your boot carpet. 3. Please do not try to check your oil levels on a warm engine. This is common sense 101. There's a reason that the car computer made you wait 30 minutes, its because when you turned the key to check the levels, you forced the car to go through a cool down cycle before it could get an accurate reading. 4. Please get a torque wrench. Order one from Amazon while you're on there getting the filters. There's a reason dealerships charge so much it's because they do everything with professional etiquette and using the exact tools meant for the job. Try to replicate that in your own garage and you won't be sorry if something does go wrong.

EXCELLENT VIDEO!!! You probably saved hundreds of Cayman owners hundreds if not thousands of dollars by DIY. Hell, that might be the easiest oil change I have ever seen, and to think Porsche probably wants between $200-500 for an oil change. I just got my Cayman a couple of months ago and I'm glad I saw you vid! Much appreciated for the time and effort you provided.

I enjoyed your video. It was concise and informative. You were inviting comments and I have to say that I have looked at others who have made dozens of videos on various subjects and your first one out-the-chute was better than many who have made in some cases, dozens of videos. Of the many KZbin faults in the KZbin universe I have seen - a camera view that goes every which way, sounds of airplanes, wind, anything to distract the viewer from the subject, and my personal favorite, the actual critical operation is not shown and the host just says "it was easy - you will figure it out". As I mentioned your video was concise and to-the-point. I'm a long time Mercedes owner and DIYer and I have to chuckle at the reliance the Germans (or just Stuttgarters?) relay on all things requiring an allen bit socket. You explained the need to have that at the very beginning. At the very beginning you explained well the tools needed and it was off to the races. Only thing as a viewer I might have changed - or added - was to introduce yourself at the beginning! Been thinking of getting a Cayman in the next year or so and have been looking at the Cayman videos here. I cannot believe that they would have an oil fill location surrounded by nice carpeting. Personally I would use a funnel and have a clean plastic bag to wrap around that funnel when done. If Some Cayman owner hasn't spilled oil on the carpet I predict that it is a matter of time. All modern Mercedes allow extraction both from the pan and through a suction device such as a Topsider through the dipstick tube,. The pan is designed such that if the car is level all the oil will be extracted from the tube. However since the Cayman has the oil filter underneath there would be no point in exploring this. Anyway just wanted to thank you for the nice informative video. Your effort and planning has shown through.

Nice video. Nice to see a real enthusiast doing simple maintenance tasks without fancy work shop equipment, and doing work in the driveway (luckily not winter with snow and rain hailing down) . That's how most of us would do it so it's nice to see people know you can do your own maintenance, even on a Porsche without all that fancy stuff or expensive bills after. I agree with the comments, re tips about latex gloves - essential with engine oil and nicer to work

Thanks for the heads up, I did subscribe as I hope to be getting a Cayman S soon. But as an old gear head, just fyi if you didn't know. Warm oil drains better. I drive mine, let it cool for 5 min., then drain it. Also, the dirt, microscopic metal pieces, whatever makes oil dirty, allot of it is in the last bit of oil coming out, so I personally let it drain what can seem like forever. Plus if you let it drain while your putting the filter on, it doesn't take so long. Someone else mentioned a little oil on the seal, I agree, a little Mobil One everywhere is good. I also wipe the drain plug clean, pour a little oil in the cap, wash the drain plug in the oil, dry it off, then dip the threads in the oil and let it drip. When you get ready to install the plug, it's got a nice thin layer of oil on it. Thanks for the tips and keep them coming as I will need them. Also, I've read the pre '09's had bearing problems. Any info. on that as I'm looking at a good '09 to get to avoid that. Thanks.

Great video. I was 911 shopping, and have changed my focus to the Caymans. I always watch to see how hard basic maintenance is before buying a car. This is easier than changing oil in my STI. Yet the dealers want 260 for the service. Looks like it can be done for around 80 depending on the oil used. Good video

Great Job on the video and thanks so much for listing all the parts needed!! I have changed the oil dozens of times on my Porsches over the years, but I was looking for a good video to share with a friend who wants to change his oil on his Cayman for the 1st time. This video is perfect. The only main difference in routine that I do is that I use floor ramps to back the rear wheels on to and then lift the front wheels up off the ground using 2 jacks so that the entire car is level. This way all the oil drains out properly and less chance of the oil pooling or rolling towards the front of the engine while it is tilted forward in your example. Also, owners check your owners manual for "capacities" for the Larger 3.4 engines and the quarts of oil needed with oil filter change. Great job and thanks again!!

+CaymanGarage Nice vid, only other thing I'd suggest is having the oil cap off as you drain, this will help the oil drain more quickly and fully, and help prevent any oil being trapped in a "vacuum" - That's how I always do my BMW anyway and as suggested to me by an ex BMW tech.

I did some of the work with him but feel like I forgot how to do a majority of it......hence me selling the car and not worrying about the expensive maintenance costs........anyways I'm reconsidering now...your video work and instructions are awesome and are much appreciated from a fellow Cayman owner. Good for you changing your own oil. It's amazing how few people can still perform this basic task. Spend your money on good oil and a quality filter and do it yourself. Nice work. That is not really a crush washer and it dosen't really need to be changed each time. Its just an aluminum washer and the point is to just have no leaks.
@zach4172
@zach4172 3 жыл бұрын
False. The more you use a drain plug washer, the more compressed it becomes which in turn means you 'll have to tighten your drain plug more and more every time, resulting in a possible stripping of your plug threads or oil pan threads. Both will be way more expensive and a hassle to replace than a 10 cent washer. Never reuse washers. Thanks
