Mentioned torque levels for the bolts and plug but a torque wrench was not on the tool list???

Good eye *Jennifer Campbell.* A torque wrench is a must have tool in the garage. We've provided a torque wrench on our sales page for those that do not have one. Check it out here: www.rockymountainatvmc.com/Sales/839/How-To-Change-The-Oil-On-A-KTM-1090-ADV-R?

Is replacing the O-rings actually necessary or is this a precaution? First time I've seen that as part of a routine job... of course you'll do it periodically (when they're worn) but this is on every oil change? I guess I also change my oil more often than required - and would for this bike as well... it's the cheapest maintenance job to protect your engine. Oils have gotten better over the years but why push it just to avoid an hour of wrench time. 9000 miles might be okay if you're riding the 1090 on the street for 90% of those miles but if you're in the dirt more often it's best to change more frequently.
@rmatvmc6 жыл бұрын
*Matt T* Replacing the o-rings is a good habit to get into to. We like to change ours out, but it's not requiered to do it everytime. You do want to inspect the o-ring to see if it needs replaced. True, oils have gotten a ton better over the years. We agree. Thanks for watching.

I wonder if i loose my warranty by doing this myself??
@rickjschultz135 жыл бұрын
I was wondering the same so I did some research. In section 6 paragraph 2 it says of the current KTM factory warranty "Owner is responsible for the costs of maintenance to the motorcycle including service at scheduled intervals. Service work properly done by the owner will not void the warranty. Failures caused directly by lack of maintenance or improper maintenance will void the warranty." Warranty is here: www.ktm.com/globalassets/service/usa/2017/2017-ktm-usa-motorcycle-warranty-policy-12-8-2016.pdf

Engines with larger bore and shorter strokes require less oil changes than under-square engines like those made by Harley Davidson for example as there is significantly less "shearing" of the engine oil where the piston rings meet the cylinder walls. Using full synthetic oil like Ams-Oil, Royal Purple and the like (Don't start an oil war here please.) will buttress these long intervals even further.

I like to use clean oil to lube the o-rings. Dipping your finger into dirty oil for this is an interesting choice.

9000 miles? 1st change was without synthetic. They said to use synthetic on the 2nd change, because non synthetic is better break in oil. Still 9000 miles on non synthetic? Thanks!
@alejandropolo4 жыл бұрын
I think you misunderstood the info, He said that the first oil change has to be done when you hit 600 miles, only then, every 9000 miles.

Isn't 9k miles too much for intervals? I'd like to hear from engine designers what they have to say about that.
@rmatvmc2 жыл бұрын
The KTM manual recommends changing the oil at 15,000 km or 9,000 miles.

Porque no es bueno llenarlo del todo. Siempre es conveniente un poco menos. El aceite caliente se expande... Con llevarlo a la mitad perfecto

One plug and one spin-on filter would have been sufficient, KTM. Had to make it complicated.
@turb0diesel5 жыл бұрын
Its a dry sump performance engine on a bike designed to handle moderate off roading. Sure adding 30lbs to engine and putting an oil pan on bottom requiring engine to be raised in frame for clearance would be simpler. Everything is a compromise.

don't like the engine guard screwed directly to the engine...

It's definitely a different design than from other ADV Models. With no frame wrapping around in front of the motor, this is your only option. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

I'd like to have the oil tested half way to that mileage. What a manufacturer says isn't always designed to be the most optional for bike life. They are concerned about parts and bike sales, afterall.
@exothermal.sprocket6 жыл бұрын
Pffft. Buy proven name brands at the right oil weight. There's no witchcraft in Motul or some bike-branded oil that will protect the bike more than 1% better than oil 1/4 the price.
@exothermal.sprocket6 жыл бұрын
That's one dealer. Other dealers may not be as strict, depending on your relationship with that dealership as well. Keep in mind, ANY SHOP will have to PROVE a failure was due to the type of oil being used. It's not an automatic warranty denial. For instance, if a bolt came loose and your subframe fell off into the back tire causing a wreck, your engine oil didn't have anything to do with that.

KTM, like other brands, does extremely well at certain things and utterly fails at other things. Yes I know they don't. If I recall, it's engine, frame, and suspension and that's it. As good as they do with the bones of the bike, things like display and switchgear and UI are pretty terrible. I use another expensive brand for a benchmark: Ducati, which does amazing UI, very good switchgear and display. KTM is starting to come around with their latest TFT equipment but they aren't as intuative. Certainly a price tag of 17 to 22 grand implies premium.
