Thanks for all of your work, Denise. I chose wigs because my thin hair has gotten thinner over time and I didn’t feel that it reflected how I felt inside. I also had a kick ass Southern matriarch grandmother who rocked her wigs! Your videos have really helped me to have fun and play with this new aspect of my life. I have bought EBay lots of wigs so I only spent $6-$10 per wig. I have cut, razored, taken out whole wefts, you name it. Even used markers to color my, predominantly gray, wigs. Ive also used markers to color tips of my hair with color…pinks, greens, violets. Needless to say I’ve had fun! And so much because of you and other lovely wig sisters. Thanks you, thank you, thank you Well……today I was so happy to see my wall of wigs waiting for me because I have just finished months of a weird allergic, hive pollen reaction followed by a mite infestation that has taken most what little hair I had! I have been meticulous and waited till all was clear, but how nice to have my new hair waiting for me. My heart goes out to all the dear sisters who have lost hair and felt so lost and unprepared. I did not. But I would never have been prepared without you and your cheerful, upbeat advice. So glad you love Jesus, we will party together soon. God bless you and your family.

Hi Denise, I think the wig looked lovely on you either way. Great info though. I’m a bit scared of heat defiant wigs especially If they have beautiful waves like that one. I’ve never used anything other than a hair dryer in my life and I’m 68 so it’s too scary. I bought Eclat which was lovely but my son lost it before posting it to me so would eventually like to get a new wavy wig, Spade looks really nice. Xx

It's so hard when you first start wearing wigs. If you have thin hair, you are not used to seeing yourself with hair. When you try on a wig, you suddenly have hair and it doesn't seem like you. You have to make your wig, your own. These tips are great. I wore my first wig around the house for a long time before I wore it out in public. The first few times I wore it outside, I wore it when we went out of town. I did not like myself in wig at first, but I got to love wigs. It is so much faster than messing with hair and you can change your look.

Absolutely the best most empathetic person about hair on the planet is YOU! Thus is excellent & you are definitely talking to me. I have not had success yet wearing a wig. I am in Florida & it is so hot the glue let’s go, it melts. I just have not had any success & I have purchased 4 expensive wigs. I simply have not gone outside with the way my hair is…

Spade costs well over $600 !!!!!! for a synthetic wig. It is outrageous on the part of these wig manufacturers and companies. That wig probably cost $10 to make. I mean, the fibers are a form of plastic, for crying out loud. With all of that said, for over $600, it ought not be necessary to make so many adjustments and modifications to a synthetic wig. I am not sounding off to Denise, who is outstanding, but the fact that these wig manufacturers are getting away with high-way robbery.

I want to start this off by saying I am absolutely NOT defending the price of this wig in any way... and also I know you weren't speaking directly to me about any of this, but you made some interesting points and I thought I would add to the conversation some of my own thoughts. I struggle with the high price of wigs like this as well...especially these days, but I am also aware of my ignorance on this topic and lack of behind the scenes knowledge and can't say one way or the other if the pricing is "fair" based on costs and standard margins on goods (if companies can't make money then they won't make the products). Since this wig is fully hand-tied, that adds to the higher price tag of it over many other types of wigs. From talking to people who know how to ventilate wigs (which is what it is called when someone hand-ties each fiber into a wig with a ventilating needle), I am guessing that this wig took anywhere from 40-70 hours to make, depending on the skill of the person dong the ventilating. On top of that, you have multiple layers of people involved... the employees need to be paid, the manufacturer needs to be paid, the distributor needs to be paid, and the retailer needs to be paid, so the price goes up with every level. This is one reason that you sometimes see really cheap wigs in the human hair wig world being sold by Chinese retailers. Some of them are actually the manufacturer who have decided to sell direct to consumer, cutting out one or even two layers of middle-men. It is also why there is such a huge disparity between the price of a basic cap wig vs a hand-tied wig. I'm not at all trying to defend these prices as I've wondered myself why they are so expensive (and in some cases, close to the price of a human hair wig that will last substantially longer than a synthetic), but just thought I'd share some of the things I've learned along the way that I never knew. I've spoken to some women who are willing to pay these high prices because they will only wear fully hand-tied wigs. I supposed that if there wasn't a market for them then they wouldn't exist. As for making modifications... I wouldn't say this wig NEEDED to be modified, but rather, since it wasn't made specifically for me and my preferences, I chose to modify it so it suited my taste better. I rarely find a wig that is perfect for me out of the box.... not because the wig is bad but because the wig wasn't customized for me. If I didn't have to work a paying job outside of my wig ministry (I do this as a passion and not as a living), I would love to really dig deep into the wig world and learn more about the differences between the budget synthetic wigs and the more luxury ones. I know there are significant differences in the cap construction which impacts the price, but I've often wondered how different the fibers really are between a $50 synthetic and a $500 synthetic. Not just speculation, but actual knowledge. I do find all this really fascinating.... but then again, these price disparities exist everywhere. Some people will pay $100 for a pair of jeans, but I struggle to bring myself to pay $40 for one... purses, makeup, shoes... you name it and someone is out there questioning why some of these things are so much more expensive than others. Anyway.... you really caused me to think about these things so thank you for your comment!

@@heywigsister I appreciate your response, Denise. I will reiterate that my rant was nothing against you, as I find your videos invaluable. I have been wearing wigs for a little over 20 years. The prices have absolutely soared through the roof, especially for synthetic, the last few years. I have recently been researching PY wigs, and they have several wigs that are hand-tied, extended lace, velcro adjusters, lace-fronts, for a little over $100 dollars. I just purchased Sheer Mystic in Java Swirl. It's a fantastic wig and, IMHO, better than the Spade you and others are currently reviewing. I did my own adjustments, e.g., dry shampoo, since it is not heat friendly (which both have their pluses and minuses, for sure), steamed a little contour into the front, applied some powder to the parting, and that's about it. For the last few years, I have/had been wearing, almost exclusively, Belle Tress. However, their prices have gotten absurd. They make very minor upgrades, and then the prices have tripled. I also have Gabor (Dress Me Up), which I find a relatively good price for the specs compared to other brands. It would be interesting to really find out the "skinny" on how these wigs are actually manufactured and the base costs, as such. You mentioned China, but most of the major brands are made somewhere in S.E. Asia, Indonesia, etc., where the cost of labor is equally as low as it is in China. I used to buy a few hand-tied synthetic styles years ago, and they were a fraction of a fraction of what they cost now. I do not know if it because wigs have gotten much more mainstream and it is a double-edged sword, that the demand for wigs, in particular synthetics, is higher, therefore they jack up the prices because the manufacturers feel they "can." In any event, thank you for your thoughtful response.

I totally agree with your comment, and I suspect many of us feel the same way. I think it’s corporate greed, you only need to look at the price of wigs marketed to women of colour to see the difference in price. I’ve been looking at wigs in places like Alibaba who market them to retailers, the price is significantly lower. I’m also offended by the fibres used in wigs, and the length of time they last. I’m convinced that retailers do NOT want a better fibre that lasts a long time as it would significantly affect their sales bottom line. For the consumer it’s a lose lose situation, and not something I can influence. 😢

@@heywigsister. I always worry that a hand-tied wig means foreign, near slave labor of an individual bent over the wig, working as fast as possible while losing their eyesight. Denise, do you know how it is actually done?

I just love your enthusiasm and your tips are invaluable to this new wig wearer. I'm learning so much from you and my confidence is growing. I just got my first non-heat friendly wig that had no part and the hair looked like a crisscross pattern. I decided where I wanted the part to be and then sat with the wig on my lap, gently separating the hairs and pinching my fingers together holding the hairs apart with just the heat of my fingers. Puller, presses and held until that part was darned near perfect. I wish I had done before and after pictures. Now, I have to work on the lace (it's an Ellen Ville). Are your shears zigzag or scalloped? Do you have a link for the shears you prefer? This girl needs more work, but I'm determined to get her how I want her to be. THANKS again for helping all of us to be more confident in making our wigs just how we want them!!

How do you pluck your wigs without getting that “coil” back fiber? Is the secret in the tweezers?
@Ms7of83 ай бұрын
Good question. Hopefully someone with knowledge on that subject with chime in.
@heywigsister3 ай бұрын
The key is getting it all the way out.... that happens when you haven't gripped it firmly and instead of plucking it you "curl" it, sort of like what you do with ribbon and a scissors on a wrapped present. I find it can happen when I accidentally get too many fibers at once as well, which is another reason to try as hard as you can to only grab one strand at a time.
@Ms7of83 ай бұрын
@@heywigsister Thanks. I try to only grab one at a time, but often more than that will get pulled with the tweezers and I get that curly thingy going. Thanks again.

Hi Denise, Your video was really helpful. I was freaking out after purchasing a wig, which stated it had a left part, but when i received it, it was a center part. I never wear my hair that way, and it looked ridiculous. Thanks for the tips, and i absolutely love your wig in the video. If you dont mind, where did you purchase this wig from, and what's the name? It resembles my actual hair and color perfectly. I typically like doing that, so when I wear my wig, it's not noticeable. Thanks again.
