I don't know to laugh or to cry. You just solved my problem. My motor after I put it together ran backwards. 🙂. I have been talking to myself for hours.

Mate, that was exactly what I needed as I have a hvac motor and fan that I need to reverse. I had no idea it was that easy so I will be doing that first thing in the morning. Thanks heaps, Stuart 🇦🇺

You have no idea how happy I am to find this video! Had pulled apart a little desk fan that was stuck. Cleaned it and put it back together, unaware that I had put the shaft in the wrong way, causing the blade to run backwards. Not knowing anything about the different types of motors, I found all kinds of advice on how to reverse the direction of a motor. This solved my exact problem without the need of rewiring anything (which I think would not have worked anyway, from what I read). Thanks! :D
@MrOldvery11 жыл бұрын
You are actually correct. If you look at a double shafted motor, one end is CW rotation and the other end is CCW rotation. So when you reverse the rotor and shaft, you will have the opposite of the original rotation. However, most PSC and shaded pole motors do not have symmetric spacings internally which means the rotor will be misaligned with the stator. This will result in reduced motor performance and can allow contact of the rotor endrings with the coils which will permanently damage the motor. Thus this would not be recommended as a general practice to reverse a motor.

Hot diggity dam!!!! Thank you so much for this video!! I just had to replace my hvac fan motor. I put it back exactly like it came apart, yet the fan rotation was wrong. Then I found your video. My replacement fan motor looks almost identical to the one you're using in this video. So I did exactly what you said to reverse the motor rotation, then put it all back together again and it's working perfectly!! I couldn't say thanks enough, it just saved me several hundred dollars.
@MrOldvery9 жыл бұрын
Michael Bolton is exactly correct regarding rotor and stator misalignment. Another concern is the possibility of the rotor endring striking the coils. While some motors are designed to be mechanically reversible, with symmetric spacings internally, most are not. This would not be recommended as a general practice to reverse a motor. I designed much of the PSC and shaded pole lines for one of the major manufacturers for 37 years as well as continue to be a member of several UL and CSA motor safety committees and frankly know what I am talking about.

Great video. this worked perfectly for me. mine was a 3 wire application so there was no 4th wire to do simple reverse with the wire method. so this was the only way thank you for making the video. spread the knowledge. thank you sir.

My application was with a condenser fan which I re-purposed as a shop fan. I built the box frame and motor mount before I realized it pushed air through the back of my box. (Its a long story as to how the motor is mounted in the outdoor condenser unit to pull hot air out of the unit...) This was a 240 volt single phase, so the comments about reversing the poles did not make any sense. I invested the minute and a half to see how this was done and it sure worked for me. I had the clockwise rotation reversed in 15 minutes blowing air from the back of my box after I remounted the now turning counter-clockwise motor. I agree: if you're going to submit a video about reversing a non-reversing motor, you should use one that doesn't reverse...the extra wire fiasco was distracting. Regardless, thanks for the guidance.

Thank you for sharing. Worked for me on my pool heater. Put it all together and sob if the fan was spinning wrong. Flipped it around like you said and boom blowing air.

Picture and analog clock on the wall that has a glass pane in front and a glass pane in back and the numbers and minute and hour hands were just kind of floating in between the two panes. Now take the clock spin it around and view it from the backside, NOW IS IT going clockwise or counter clockwise, its still going in the same direction but the orientation has changed so it appears to be going counterclockwise.

If the motor I purchased just says clockwise on the purchase page, does that mean it's clockwise on the shaft end or the lead end? It didn't specify. I just assumed it meant on the shaft end.

Polarity {+( +- )-} this is for clockwise and { -(-+)+} for reverse rotation . ( ) is the the magnet covered by solonoid type thing that rotates and { } are the coils external on the magnet !
@cheath87055 жыл бұрын
This suggestion will only work if the stator is in the middle. Several motors I've encountered had an offset stator which is closer to either the front or back. Switching around the armature can get so far offset from the stator that it may not even function.

Can ANY non reversible motor be reversed.... I have looked online until Im blue in the face and I am just trying to find out if all non reversible motors can in fact be reversed in some way.... Also what would happen if a non-reversible motor was wired backwards, like a single phase motor... would the motor just not run, would the motor burn up....I know there are lots of qualifications to my question but looking at your video it seems you know a quite a lot about electric motors.

in a reverseable motor you can switch the 4 rotation leads around in a directional motor you cant just switch the wires moron wont spin full speed and will over heat and trip the over load or burn the windings up but you can flip the stator around as show in the video

@ionelpascu17787 жыл бұрын
If it's a shaded-pole motor you do that. It's not called an unreversable motor. This typer of motor, shaded-pole is the only one where you have to physically reverse the rotor inaide the stator. The rest of them that are 3 phase you just interchange any two leads of the 3 phase source.
@kraigkearns15272 жыл бұрын
That will not work to reverse the rotation counter clockwise to clockwise. The only thing you accomplished accomplished by doing that was moving the wires closer to the shaft.
@roblc611 жыл бұрын
THIS DONT SOUND TO REAL TO ME. IF THIS WAS SO TRUE YOU COULD OF USED A MOTOR WITHOUT REVERSAVLE LEADS AND ACTUALLY DEMONSTRATING THIS AWESOME TRICK ACCORDING TO YOU .
@jayjaykingbee556610 жыл бұрын
this is for you SERGIO. it IS a reversible motor ELECTRICALLY because he can just reverse it by swapping two of the wire leads thus changing the polarity +/- to -/+ he is choosing not to do that. by ignoring the wire leads altogether he is essentially making it ELECTRICALLY a non-reversible motor. So instead, he is changing the direction MECHANICALLY by changing which side the shaft is on . the actual rotation of the stator is still the same but the orientation is now flipped.
@rayford219 жыл бұрын
Jay H. Switching the source voltage leads will NOT change motor direction. The motor direction is determined by a start winding or capacitor which momentarily introduces a false second phase magnetic field 90 degrees out of phase with the source current. If the false field is 90 degrees the motor turns in one direction; if it's 180 degrees it turns in the opposite direction. If the motor has a start winding, reversing the leads TO THE START WINDING will change the motor direction. FYI: Before you remove any through bolts to a motor be sure you make witness marks at one inline location on each end bell (case covers) AND both case ends. Lining up all 4 of these marks makes it easy to reinstall your through bolts.
