I drive a 1997 Buick Riviera that now has 445,000 kms on it and never touched supercharger oil since new. Will now attend to this, seeing how simple it is. My regular service manager at GM had told me changing this oil isn't necessary and not easily doable. I met another Riviera driver who told me what to do, so it's happening this afternoon. PS I still have the original battery in this car!

@RYNORICHIE1 yeah, i was told by gm that to do things properly on the supercharger, you drain all of the old oil out, and then fill it up with fresh oil just to the edge of the hole, usually just a little bit left in the 2nd bottle doing that. thats coming from the gm service department in clearwater florida.

Great video! I own a total of 3 GTP's, plus 1 that was junked. I never knew that it is necessary to drain and replace the supercharger oil. I never did so on any of mine and I never had an issue with the snout. The snout is where the gears are located and thus they need gear oil (supercharger oil is just gear oil) but this gear oil lasts a very long time, about 150,000 miles or more. Now, I am not suggesting that anyone who wants to take great care of their boosted 3800 engine should not bother with changing the blower oil. It really does not cost much to do this (you can order SC oil online from Intense-Racing for $8.99 for 8 oz) But if you have not changed this oil at 150,000 miles and had no issues, or you are considering trading in or selling your Supercharged GM car, why bother now?

hey sorry took so long, been really busy.. getting to the back bank of spark plugs just requires patience and some tools that give you a longer reach, your average tools usually wont be long enough unless you got really small hands, or know some trick to it that i dont know about. we just pulled my back ones out yesterday and we used basically a long narrow pair of round tipped pliers to grab the plug wire by the base to pull it out and a long spark plug socket with basically a joint in it

See if the rattle is louder coming from the snout of the supercharger, or the internal part of the bigger part. you can use a screwdriver for this to make it easier.. place the screwdriver against the body of it while its running, and then against the snout of it.. put your ear against the handle of it to listen kind of like using a stethoscope for a car.
@rcrocker0211 жыл бұрын
i definitely wouldnt use motor oil so make sure it says "supercharger oil" on the container, as i was told by gm whether its their brand or another brand, the supercharger oil is made differently to work in a supercharger specifically. as far as that goes ive never heard of there being differences in viscosity or anything with supercharger oil.. if i were you id contact gm and ask them what theyd advise even if its not their brand you buy. oh and zzp makes a bottle that is perfect size for it.

Thanks for a cool video DIY It appears as though the filler hole would be as easy to access, with the engine cover on, as well as off. Any particular reason for removing it? Also, instead of using needlenose pliers to prevent losing the filler screw, try a magnetic pickup tool so keep it secure.
@rcrocker0210 жыл бұрын
only real reason for removing it is so you could see easier what we were doing in the video, and some people just find it easier with the cover off, some people it doesnt matter. is it necessary to remove the cover? no. but i wanted to cover everything in one video in case someone wanted to.

this is a general service oil change just like changing the oil on a car or changing transmission fluid, you dont drop the transmission and engine every time you want to change their fluids. IF you do in fact have stuff built up in the bottom of your supercharger then sure remove it, but if you keep your oil changed properly there shouldnt be any problem

they are super reliable - where i work we see them a fair bit - they make good skid rigs while being super reliable - the australian made motors came after the buick 3.8 - they were a 3.6L V6 - i think they were the Ecotec motors - they go hard too i own a ford - it has a 4L inline 6 SOHC motor that hasent changed a single bit since 1960! (well except for an alloy head and i think at some point it became SOHC from OHV the modern version of the INTECH 4.0L motor is the barra - it came in multiple sizez/power and it came out as DOHC with coil over plugs rather than the single coil pack my car has (2002 Ford Falcon) my 1992 Ford Fairmont has a Distributor and coil

yeah never really had any problems with it and im hard as hell on cars. got this and my bmw and while my bmw is pretty reliable i really gotta keep up with maintenance, the pontiac doesnt really care what you do it just ask for more even if you were to treat it like shit just cause that 3800 is so tough. big aftermarket too. 3.6 is strong but not as much aftermarket or boost applications over here and they kept putting it in front wheel drive cars as well which is annoying.

youll find a variety of answers depending which mechanic you talk to. its typically 30,000 to 50,000 miles between changes. longer the more you baby it, shorter the harder you run it, if you race the car id say even more often like 20,000 if you boost a lot.

@rcrocker0210 жыл бұрын
damage to the supercharger is always a risk if you over or under fill it, but this is easy to solve by simply knowing how much you put in, ordering a bottle of supercharger oil from a place like zzp solves any guess work because it comes in the exact amount needed. as far as the hole being on the side, with that being a different setup it sounds like im not sure if youd fill it in the same spot. i would consult a gm technician to be sure before trying it on your vehicle. look around to see if there may be a filler hole somewhere else further in, or on the top or other side of the supercharger, or on back side maybe.

man, i can't believe that the automotive repair manuals tell you that you should have a dealer perform this service. when this is all you gotta do. psssh.... for the longest time, i always thought that this must be a really complex job, by the way the repair manuals advice you to have this service performed at your dealer. and let me guess... your dealer would probably charge you $120.00 for this service, right? the more i learn about how easy it really is to do a lot of repairs on your car, the more i want to go to school to be a ASE certified mechanic.

My '02 GTP OWner Manual says to check it at 30K - it doesn't say to change it. @RYNORICHIE1 weird...cause mine took 1 full bottle and about 3/4 of the second bottle... you just fill it until its topped off at the edge of the hole... ive been told in forums that diffferent dealers say different things tho, some mechanics say dont drain it at all, and just to simply top it off every now and then... but your supercharger shouldnt be losing any oil to begin with so yeah.... oil breaks down over time from high temps, therefore replacing as some techs say made more sense to me.

the oil in the supercharger needs to be specifically supercharger oil not motor oil, as this particular supercharger doesnt run on the engine oil system. as far as removing it to replace it, i havent had to do that yet so i cant be for sure, but i would just search "replacing 3800 v6 supercharger" and if you have any trouble finding anything let me know and ill check around see if i can find anything worth while

@Cottonwood121 no problem... when i was trying to find out myself i searched and searched and had trouble finding anything that was real specific, but its actually really simple. when i figured out just how easy it was i was like... wtf... thats it? lol
