This guy is doing it wrong tho... The PS3 paste issue sits below the CPU covers, that paste has to be replaced as well people, otherwise you're doing it for nothing... Trust me, I've got years of experience in PS3 repairs

@@briankelly9414 The chips have paste on top, but also inside themselves. Like a regular intel CPU these chips have a metal cover on the top. in the ps3 the top cover of the chips has to be removed as well, because the paste inside is also dry, unfortunately.

Thank you so much for the video. It saved me a lot of time. One recommendation for everyone out there, you might want to replace the battery on the motherboard. It is a CR2032 and make sure to get a name brand. They are not that expensive. Considering the age of the PS3 it might be overdue.

Thank you for your detailed instructions on taking the PS3 apart, replacing the paste and bunging it all back together. I was given a PS3 that was as loud as a vacuum cleaner from the moment it was switch on. Now it is as quiet as a mouse. The amount of dust and fluff inside the machine was an eye opener. It was everywhere so it was given a good clean with a soft brush and vacuum cleaner. I also replaced the clock battery. My other PS3 (the same model number) will be getting the same treatment when I get some more thermal paste.

I also prefer to statically discharge my body by grounding myself (touch something metal, wear grounding bracelet) so I don't ruin any circuit boards I'm handling. Many thanks for producing these excellent how-to videos that dive right into the how-to without a bunch of needless commentary or explanation of this or that. That's what everyone is looking for imo. I usually do not comment on KZbin, but I have to this time... Awesome videos! Your sound and camera work is super, not a lot of noise, music or heavy base; just super to follow and understand. Your explanations are great! No matter if the viewer is skilled or a novice, there is nothing left to question and you're not left wondering, "what did he mean". I'm not the type to watch videos, but usually just tear into things and do it; if all else fails I can always go back to a video. It is like the people who read instructions if they really can not figure it out for themselves. FIVE STARS When are you going to do a video on the PS4?

one of the better ps3 disassembly videos on youtube! used your videos as reference today on a ps3 fat and didn't run into any issues. everything seems to be working as it should now with the CPU temps hovering at around 72 degrees instead of 79+ degrees which was causing it to shut down. the old thermal paste was almost non existent after 16 years so i was lucky that permanent damage wasn't done to the chips. might have to do another round for my ps3 slim next but it doesn't show any signs of overheating so i might let it be... for now. cheers!

Good reminder on the dot method. Gonna do this tomorrow when I get some more paste. Just replaced my battery and cleaned old paste off. Hopefully battery replacement fixes the update hang 8002F1F9 error code I'm having. If not, I don't know what else I could do. I read it could be a bad HD, but I think the HD is fine. Move controllers would not work and wireless internet would not connect. If the battery does not fix that, the whole board may need to be replaced. 16:00 my antenae is different. There are 2 connectors that end in a 2 metal clips which attach to the housing. No coil.

Great video and all but there's one thing you didn't do that I would recommend everybody do if they can. @lain328

@@DavidZheng well you should fully dismantle the console to the point where you get to the motherboard before applying any thermal paste. I would simply remove the heat spreaders first, apply a pea-sized underneath the heat spreaders. And ask for on top of the heat spreaders I would simply recommend going with a simple X and add a small but decent sized pea-sized dot In the middle. The cross is just to make sure that the majority of the heat spreader gets covered and a pea-sized is what's really meant cool it. If he using the thermal Grizzly stuff just apply it like the instructions say, their stuff spreads pretty easily.

I did all this today and cleaned everything properly fresh paste and properly spreader and working 2 minutes of gameplay my ps4 shuts off and blinks the red light can’t figure out what it is , maybe bad fan or something on motherboard took a shit ? This is the reason why I searched for this video to properly dismount and mount and I still have the same problem so dust isn’t the problem.

Hello, just bought a ps3 fat that had been used only too archieve about 60 Audio cds. So it wasnt used for gaming. I think therefore its a pretty nice piece to keep it alive. What else do you recomend me to do if i tear it down? Is there some other components that needs a new thermal paste? Ive reed in the comment section that if the fan still screams you need to change the thermal paste on the IHS(or whats the name of it) too? Can you say something about that? Thank you!

Only other thing I could think of are the thermal pads. I've never replaced them but I'm sure they dry out. There usually little spongy rectangles on a bunch of chips on the board.

Great video set with the diss-assembly being one and the thermal paste application & assembly being another. My PS3 lives! I just have one problem, I have lost 2 pieces of the foam tape stuff like you mentioned not to lose in this video. lol One was last time I dusted & one was today. It was so bad I just tossed it today. What is the ruberized/foam tape stuff called so I can order some? Where's a good place to order it? Thanks man!

I’m hoping I put enough gold paste I followed everything in your video, earlier I pulled the PS3 apart and got to the heat sink the paste was damn near burned onto it, it’s a good thing I got to it before it got worse so now the system should not be pushing out so much hot heat but like I said I’m hoping I put enough paste. I got my game system from a friend who got it from a friend it’s the 2008 PS3 so yeah the paste probably was replaced once because the heat sinks were bent so I refix them and everything should work perfectly, I did repaste and old laptop first about 3 or 4 months ago it was over heating now it’s running cool with gold paste that I order off of eBay it came from a business.
