Honda S2000 Playlist - goo.gl/FflSr1
1. The first thing you want to do is make sure the car is on level ground, and raise it up onto jack stands ensuring that it is still level. I had an additional video on how this is done if you are curious. It is important that the car is level so that you add the appropriate amount of oil to the transmission housing.
2. With a drain pan located underneath, you’ll want to locate and remove the oil filler plug. This is the plug on top, not to be confused with the bottom plug, which is the drain plug. Removing the fill plug will allow you to check the cleanliness of the oil, as well as the level.
3. As you can see, with the old oil on the left and the new oil on the right, the old oil is clearly dirty and in need of replacement. Our next step is to remove the drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.
4. With the fluid drained, reinstall the drain plug, making sure to use a new 14 mm washer, and use a torque wrench to tighten the bolt to 29 lb-ft. Always be careful not to over-tighten, as you could damage the threads.
5. Next, begin refilling the transmission fluid. To do this, I’m using genuine Honda manual transmission fluid, as well as a simple transfer pump. I’ll include a link to this tool in the video description.
6. Pump in the transmission fluid until you have some start to spill out from the filler hole. This ensures that your transmission fluid is at the correct height, and you’ve added the correct amount.
7. Re-install the oil filler plug with a new 20 mm washer, which can be purchased from Honda for about sixty cents. Use a torque wrench to tighten this bolt to 33 lb-ft.
8. With the fluid in place and both bolts torque to spec, simply wipe up any excess oil that remains on the transmission case, and you’re all done!

I am planning to change the gearbox oil in a 2000 Toyota Camry. I am wondering if I can gain access by using ramps and if I do use ramps how much off will I be filling the box at that angle? A second consideration is using an extraction pump to remove and replace the gear oil (mine looks exactly like the one you're using in the video). Will I be able to reach the bottom of the sump using fairly stiff nylon tubing? Doing it that way would at least allow me to keep the car level and I already have the pump & tubing. All I would have to buy would be a 24mm socket and one new washer. I don't have a lot of tools, equipment or money so what I'm considering here takes that into consideration. If you have any additional ideas that could work for me, please pass them along. Thanks

Do you have any tips on doing a DIY wheel alignment? and/or tightening the suspension/alignment for older vehicles? I'd like to learn how to do this myself (dial it in) if it is possible? How do you feel about synchromesh fluids or other manual transmission additives? Happy Holidays and thanks for the great videos!
@patw52pb1
@patw52pb1 7 жыл бұрын
Only use the fluid/lubricant and additive specified by the manufacturer. Most manual transmissions do not require additives and aftermarket additives usually cause premature synchronizer failure. With Honda/Acura vehicles always use genuine Honda transmission fluid, whether manual or automatic transmission. Genuine Honda fluids have the correct formulation and additive package to be compatible with the materials in the Honda transmissions. This also applies to Honda power steering fluid.
@GrimYak
@GrimYak 7 жыл бұрын
in a honda no. Hondas are picky with their oils and you could wreck the transmission if you put other additives to it.

Mobil 1 makes the best trans fluid. In the cold it sucks because of how thick it is, but once it warms up it's sooooo good. The thickness helps protect everything even in high stress and makes worn synchros feel new.

Would be great if you could do a video studying "lifetime" transmission fluid claims. There is so much conflicting information with manufacturers/dealers saying a sealed transmission under normal use does not need an oil change while workshops and people will tell you that lifetime means the warranty period/mileage of the car and that you should be changing it regularly - this is despite the fact that sealed transmissions are now designed to be maintenance free and are not easy to drain. Would love if you could approach this scientifically as you always do.

@sphericalsphere
@sphericalsphere 7 жыл бұрын
for automatics the process is different as you usually have a somewhat defined fluid flow as opposed to just having gears running in oil. As you already mentioned, they also have filters. Those need to be changed, or at least should for it to make sense. There are also valves inside that can/should be cleaned

Fluid Film,,, spraying it in all holes and crevices can stop rust from starting (or slow it down if it has). Not sure if S2000's have any problematic areas, but its not expensive and is a better product than WD40 with a million uses

You should probably note in the title that this is for European and Asian vehicles mostly; most US vehicles require transmission pan removal to drain all fluid. I hear they are getting better about that, though.

Cars Simplified This is a manual transmission. Pretty much all manuals have a drain and fill plug. Auto transmissions, however, commonly do not have drain plugs and instead the pan has to be dropped

I don't know how that ended up missing from my comment; I know I had that in it at one point but I did edit it a lot. Good catch!

Can you talk about the 3x3 method? Is it necessary?
@osubucks2010

Jimmy M I think the 3x3 method is used for automatic transmissions which retain a lot more fluid during changes. I do a drain and fill every 2 oil changed (or 15k miles), which replaces just over 1/3 of the fluid. I think that's easier on the tranny than replacing all 10 quarts at once.

Jimmy M I think I read something about that years ago. Like they figured if you just do a drain and fill vs a flush. Drain and fill then run through gears. Drain and fill , repeat 3 times and something like 97% of the fluid will be new. I don't think it's necessary if you drain and fill every 30k miles or so. If it hasn't been changed for 100k miles , might be a good idea or take it in for a flush.

Did u ever have to change the power steering fluid in ur old STI? My dealer is trying to charge me over $200 for that and it doesnt even seem necessary

Then again though it has gotten me to 30k miles without any problems. So $200 doesnt seem terrible

it should be fine but if you have to just buy the appropriate power steering fluid for your vehicle and use some sort of pump to take out the old fluid out of the reservoir. doing a flush would require you to remove the return line, have it set up to drain in a bucket, while you fill the reservoir. you should only need the flush If your having steering issues.

Just use a turkey baster to suck the fluid out of the reservoir and refill.

A good reason for opening the filler plug first, is because this filler plug can get hellastuck if trans fluid hasnt been changed before.. and allooot of people hardly or never do that. So you dont wanna be stuck with the drain plug out and all the fluid out and not being able to get out the filler plug...

while this works great for a manual transmission fluid, how could you extract all the oil in an automatic transmission, this because even if you drain the "carter" there's a lot of fluid between gears and stuff
@patw52pb1
@patw52pb1 7 жыл бұрын
Most of the fluid in an automatic transmission is in the torque converter. On many torque converters there is a small drain plug. Rotate the torque converter to place the drain plug at the lowest position, remove plug, drain the converter, carefully replace the plug, do not over-tighten the plug and refill the transmission, start the engine, run for about 1 minute, check fluid level, top off to the proper level, start engine and run again for about 1 minute, check fluid level again and repeat starting and topping off until the fluid level is stable and correct. There is very little fluid between the gears and stuff, most of the fluid (about 95-98%) is in the lower pan and the torque converter.
