Coolant Flush | Honda S2000

Hey everyone! Today I’m going to show you how to flush the coolant on a Honda S2000. This is one of my most requested videos so I really hope you enjoy it.
According to the owner’s manual the coolant should be be replaced after either 120,00 miles or 10 years of use. My car already has 145,000 miles but I don’t have any maintenance records from the previous owner so I’m just flushing mine to be safe.

should look into one of those coolant refill air purge tools, just got one the other day and is totally worth it. Don't have to wait around while the car is running to bleed the coolant system. Tool takes care of all that within seconds!

Hello, I was wondering if you could help me out. I am having issue with my heating on the car. The car has gone through a full rebuild and we bleed the car but my heating is still not scorching hot,. The car was jacked up front like in the video we let it run and there was no more bubbles coming into the bleeding funnel. Do you think car might still have air into the system or there might me a clogged heating exchange?

DIYGuys. Excellent radiator fluid replacement video. But, what if I want to do an entire cooling system flush and clean?

This will get almost all fluid out of the cooling system. If you want to go even further you can blow the rest of the fluid out using compressed air.

I think either solution would be fine. If you use water make sure to use distilled water.

Looking at the Honda service manual, there's a step to also remove the drain plug from the right side of the engine block. I was searching for a video to show that step as well. Any reason this step wasn't covered here? Otherwise, I'd say kudos for a very thorough and thoughtful video. Takes the guesswork out of the bleeding procedure too, and I learned about a cool funnel I didn't know existed. Thank you.

The general consensus is that the engine drain bolt is so difficult to reach that its not worth the effort to drain the last few teaspoons of coolant out of the block. Alternatively, you can blow out remaining coolant using compressed air.

I would just get the Honda coolant. I doubt that all blue coolant is the same, they are probably just using artificial coloring.

I’m not sure if it is the best but it is safe and proven. I think for most applications Honda Type 2 is great. I have done almost 30 track days on this stuff.

Yes. The hoses will be effectively stuck. You won’t be able to break them loose just by pulling on them. What you need to do is twist them to break their bond with the plastic. I recommend using some pliers to do this.

Thanks for the video! I flushed my 00 ap1 end of last year. It still had the original green coolant. Car has 32k miles. I noticed yesterday there's like a slight white goo in the coolant reservoir. I used the oem type2 blue coolant from the dealer. Any ideas what it could be? Looks almost like oil it was clean green color before I flushed it. Almost looks like oil droplets.

How long should I leave the car in the on position? Should it be left there for the remaining of the flushing?

You just have to leave the ignition in the on position so there is power and the valve opens when you turn the temperature knob to hot. Otherwise it doesn't need to be in the on position.

There will be very little coolant left in the block. Just gotta left the coolant cool down!

Do you ever squeeze the top radiator hose with the air bleeder open and closing before releasing the hose? That’s part of the Billman method. Maybe you found that all air exited the system with the funnel method. I ended up doing both.

I’ve run into an issue. I did a full flush with water and a flushing chemical and then proceeded to follow your steps in the video. When I refilled with coolant, and got the car up to operating temp, the coolant in my no leak funnel started bubbling like crazy and splashed out of the funnel everywhere before the radiator fans could even come on. Please help!

The bubbling can be pretty violent at times but it should get better as more air is removed from the system. Also make sure you’re not filling the funnel too much

How to you get the valve to open at 00:35. With the heating at max and fan on, w ignition position 2. I couldn't get it to move. The car was cold (engine off). I decided to ignore that part and do the rest. I was able to follow along and the car seems fine. Did I miss anything by not doing that bit

Have the radiator fans come on yet? It all depends on how hot the coolant temperature is. At a certain temperature the thermostat opens and a bunch of air will be let out.

At which part of the process are you talking about? At the beginning I turn the car off. At the end I also turn the car off when I remove the funnel. Not to allow the coolant to cool off necessarily but just to reduce the risk of burning myself with the hot coolant. You could optionally wait for the coolant to cool off completely.

Need help!! I followed the directions exactly the way you said but I’m not getting any heat. How long does it take for to heat to get hot? My hoses were burning hot so I tried holding the throttle and the coolant started creeping up till it’s almost spilling so I shut off the car. Any suggestions?

Yeah. Should do 1-2 cycles with the radiator fans coming on. Should be about 205 degrees F. If the coolant is spilling out of the funnel, use less coolant since it seems to expand when heated.

@deegaw11 you should have removed the funnel and capped the radiator while the fluid was hot so it would pull coolant from the overflow as the pressure drops. You may have introduced air into the system.

@@DIYGuysvideo I filled the funnel back up and let it idle and the heat was still hot while watching the coolant and there were small amounts of bubbles but it stopped and the coolant was calm. I then put the cap back on and shut it off so hopefully I’m good now.

I think the concern is that the thermostat doesn’t open until the car is at 194F. The radiator fans come on at 205F. So the radiator fans are a good indicator of when the system has gotten hot enough that any air pockets should have been removed. So my answer is... maybe.

Have the radiator fans blown twice? It needs to get hot enough that the thermostat opens. Ambient temps could be cool this time of year.

Hmm. I don’t think an open coolant reservoir would matter since air should only be leaving the system. As it burps, coolant should be replacing air in the system. As long as you continue to see bubbles there is either air in the system or air is entering the system through somewhere else. Strange

Thermostat might not have opened yet. Radiator fans need to come on a couple times to indicate coolant temp is hot.

@@DIYGuysvideo Thanks, it's blowing hot now and the fan came on. I was getting worried cause it took a long time; probably 25 minutes. The whole time I was thinking "shit, my block has no coolant and Im burning up the motor."
