Best video Tutorial for valve cover and gaskets. You the man! Thank you very much….and yes, the little 1/4” drive is a life saver!

This guy doesn’t show removing the three back valve cover bolts which are a complete pain to get to. Around 6:05 , he completely skips over those. I found the top and bottom ones but I missed the middle back one because I didn’t know it was there and cracked my valve cover on my driver side. Very thorough. Thanks. 🤬

This very good video and my shade-tree skills will save me $$$. An independent garage quoted $700 for doing the gaskets on my 2006 Cayenne S. I'm much more confident at tackling it after seeing it. Thx bro!

All in all it’s an easy job just have to be careful lifting the valve covers off so not to damage the timing components

Lessons learned while doing this a few days ago: 1. Be careful removing the passenger side air box - there is a nipple for an air hose on left side that I broke, tried epoxy, but didn't work, ended up with duct tape. 2. Be careful when moving hoses around near the firewall on passenger side - I broke the plastic 'Y' that is part of the manifold vent hose, it's around $100 to replace (goes to manifold, intake plenum, and somewhere else)...I used heat resistant stretch tape as a temporary fix. Same goes when removing and replacing the air pump bracket because it puts pressure on that fitting. 3. The A/C wire that runs across the driver's side valve cover has very little slack and it is a pain to slide the cover in and out, and you will risk either smearing your new sealant if you use some, or damaging the camshaft fingers ($$$$$), just cut and reconnect as he did in the video. 4. Make sure not to over torque your plugs and ruin the threads in your heads ($$$$$). I believe the the spec is 22 Nm (30 ft-lbs), but don't quote me. I stopped at 15 ft-lbs just to be safe. Figured I could always go back and re-tighten if I'm losing compression - better safe than sorry. 5. Finally, those valve cover bolts in the back corner near the firewall are a bitch...get ready for a fight, and good luck!

@tomcarter68044 жыл бұрын
@@OK-qj5yg Hi, no I don't. I didn't crank down on mine and haven't had any leaks. I usually go 1/8 to 1/4 turn past snug.
@regularmechanic41964 жыл бұрын
@@OK-qj5yg 7 ft LBS which is not very tight. as soon as its snug its maybe 1/8th of a turn that's it

Great vid - helped a lot for my gasket replacements... worst part for me is the vacuum-hose on the passenger cold-air box - can't get it off!

there is a very small step in the covers near the front that needs a dab of gasket sealant when you replace them. When i took mine off, I could see the old dab of a red sealant that was used previously.

Dude, this is the best video on taking down to the valve covers. Great job!! You can probably do well refurbishing these engines. Makes me want to give up the pen for a machine project like this. The vehicle is undeniably great, as shown by the mechanics. Just wish there were more thought in the year down process. E.g., why bury the starter underneath the coolant pipes made out of cheap plastic.

DO NOT cut the wire for the AC compressor, if you look straight down on the top of the compressor there is a connector. Disconnect the wire will give you enough slack to remove the left valve cover, you do not need to pull the wire all the way out just uncouple will give you enough room. The video is good just wanted to point this out, you already had the wire cut and my valve covers were missing bolts, wonder why it leaked? That's what happens with 2nd hand vehicles you have to live with other peoples hacks. so DON'T hack the A/C wire.

Do you think the round gasket by the valve sensor x2, these are the electrical connections on the front of the valve cover, can be swapped without taking the valve cover off? I smoke tested the oil filer cap and smoke rolled out of the sensor seals.
@regularmechanic41963 жыл бұрын
I think the you would have to remove the valve cover. Also those seals over time turn almost into plastic and are really tough to remove.

Did you install the seal for the timing adjustment solenoid before putting the cover on or should it be installed when the cover is torqued down? Thanks for sharing, got the mini wrench and getting ready to start

Hi, great video. I need to change bank 1 camshaft actuator, hence valve cover removal. I've read horror stories about damaging something called the "cam fingers"...you know anything about that? Also, which side is bank 1? 04 Cayenne Turbo. Thanks.
@regularmechanic41964 жыл бұрын
bank 1 is the left side, or passenger side on US cars. i haven't done cam work on these cars but i have heard of the cam fingers, just be careful and don't force anything that doesn't want to move.
@christian_urocar3 жыл бұрын
I’m not entirely sure but I think it’s the Touareg that has the “ fingers” . Although same chassis this has a Porsche engine , in this video and some Cayenne valve cover videos I haven’t noticed any “ fingers “

PLZ help! I've replaced the valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets, spark plugs and water pump on my 955 V8 but now its running very rough (rough idle) and the engine smells likes it's burning. I did what I could to bleed the cooling system, I don't have any fancy equipment so I did the let car idle with the heat on its highest setting with the expansion tank cap off, the vehicle really didn't seem to heat up although I was only able to run the car for 1-2min before shutting it off due to rough idle and smell of burning motor . I've tripled checked all my wiring/fuses and measured voltage/resistance to coils and fuel injectors and everything turned out to be fine, all 8 cylinders are running. The only think I can of now, and didn't check is the valve cover gaskets not being properly seated, I did noticed the gasket for the spark plugs/coils seemed as if it was able to get positioned multiple ways, how did you go about placing that gasket?
@regularmechanic41964 жыл бұрын
Force of nature the burning smell is normal after a job like this oil tends to get on your exhaust sometimes, the gaskets are a pressure fit in the valve cover. For your rough running issue, the 1st thing I would check are The vacuum hoses around the valve covers and all of the electrical connections on or around the throttle body. If the engine ran fine before and not after those are the 2 things that most likely are your issue.

Hello, I have a cayenne turbo 4.5, it starts very cold, it starts very hot if it is not stopped for more than 10 or 15 minutes, if there is more time stopped it takes 10 seconds to start and it does so as if it were drowned with fuel, and replace the crankshaft position sensors and camshafts, repair the pcv valve, check the canister, bovines, spark plugs, maf, everything is ok, there are no errors when scanning, something curious if I inject air through the canister hose to the intake manifold, it turns on well, the truth is that I have fried, something similar happened to you? Thank you very much in advance, greetings from Argentina
@brianmooney7014 жыл бұрын
Mine was doing that. Replaced starter and all good. Starter is under intake manifold so tends to get hot especially sitting after a run.
@regularmechanic41964 жыл бұрын
I would look into the starter as Brian mentioned, its a common issue with these cars because of the heat.
