In this video I show you how to change out the transmission fluid on my 2008 BMW 335i. This tutorial is suitable for any ZF 6HP equipped E90 BMW.
I'd recommend an replacement interval of 30K miles.
The pan I bought:
www.ebay.com/itm/131968958072?...
Link to a thread showing how to setup INPA/NCS Expert:
www.e90post.com/forums/showthr...
If you have Windows 10 64-Bit:
www.e90post.com/forums/showthr...
You can find the INPA cable online at places such as Amazon or Ebay. Search INPA Cable K+D Can. When you see the word "affiliate" listed beside any link in my description please know that this is a custom link and I will earn a small commission if you opt to purchase using said link. This was an excellent video. Just changed mine and the video was invaluable. Two things to remember. 1. MAKE SURE YOU CAN GET THE FILL PLUG LOOSE FIRST!!!. Drive a wedge block of wood like a small door stop between the allen wrench and transmission housing in order to keep the allen wrench from trying to back out and possibly stripping the plug. Mine was in there so tight it twisted the allen wrench itself. I had to keep tapping with a 2 pound hammer, used another allen with a small piece of conduit for leverage and it finally "popped" loose. Man it was tight. 2. Watch the last step where the author adds fluid under the car with the motor running in PARK. That procedure added an extra quart to my transmission and made it super smooth in shifting. Mine took nearly 6 quarts. They don't give you much room for wastage in the 6 quart bundles.

I took a funnel with a long hose and ran it down to the fill hole, from the engine compartment. It made it much easier to fill the transmission, allthough you will need to have someone pour the fluid in for you when you get close to the point of the fluid running out, so you can monitor it and quickly replace the plug when it's ready.

Hi, your site has been helpful to me and Im so glad i found it. I watch most of your videos and I notice the exit signs on some of the videos you posted and it it seems you’re not too far from where I live here in Katy. Its been my wish to upgrade to 335’s (i own 2 e90’s 325i and 330i, and an e46) but im afraid to get one due to their know issues which im afraid will cost me an arm and a leg fixing and maintaining it. Just a tip: You should loosen the fill bolt first before draining. It's not unknown for that bolt to be near on impossible to shift, so doing it first ensures you're not stuck with a drained transmission and no means to fill it and take it to a workshop or to pick up a decent allen wrench.

After you do the final fill, you could unplug the transmission cooler line, put a bottle or some sort of catch with it. Start the car and drain out about 3 qts. Then attach the cooler line and refill with 3 qts. Keep doing this until the fluid coming out of the trans cooler line is bright red. You would need the special 4 prong key (tool) to take the cooler line off its fitting.

Had a question, my 2006 330i jerks coming to a stop and i occassionally gets the red cogwheel sign and goes off. I researched on forums and this is what i was told: “This could be caused from a faulty shift solenoid, pressure loss or faulty speed input. You'll have to monitor trans pressure adaptations and ISS and OSS to see which area it may be”. Is changing the solenoid a DIY thing? The car drive fine, its just doesnt feel right shifting from low gears. Also i get a bouncy speedometer needle. This is the codes it throws on my icarly app. 1. Rotation detection right rear 005DC6 2. Advance sense rear left 005DB6 Like you said, these e90’s engine and transmission are stealth. Hopefully that is the case on my transmission not going out.

It's highly recommended to check the temperature during the fill procedure. You only need to purchase a sub-100$ INPA-compatible cable to avoid having to spend thousands in future repairs if you happen to underfill the fluid in your transmission. FYI, it will take longer than 8 minutes to reach the required temperature.

Do you need to reset adaptions after fluid and filter change? Is it a MUsT? Some people say.. pressing the throttle all the way down and holding flr 30 seconds in accessory mode engine off than restarting the vehicle “resets” transmission? Is this true..? Is reset same as resetting adaptions? If not what is the difference..? Thank you
@Gutsmagoria
@Gutsmagoria Ай бұрын
That procedure is for resetting throttle plate adaptations. If you think the drive-by-wire isn't responding the way you want, you can try that, and just drive how you want. It's very harmless. The transmission reset is easy enough, but the re-learn is very involved, taking 45 minutes and lots of repeating steps that might be unsafe on a road with any traffic. It's very important to do the re-learn if you do the reset. You definitely have to do the reset for any hard-parts change. Some say you should for fluid too. I'm on the fence. I changed my fluid and didn't feel comfortable doing the re-learn, and I'm happy with my 335i with 170k miles on the trans and 40k on the fluid. I'm about to do it again just because I think it wasn't done before 130 when I fixed a leaking pan, but looked ok.

I just bought a 2008 335xi 2 days ago with 142k miles on it and there is already something leaking from the bottom of the car. I think it is transmission fluid because my oil levels are showing normal. Where would you recommend me check first?
@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY 6 жыл бұрын
Check around the drain plug of the transmission, next at the top right corner where the mechatronic sleeve is. Next would be the oil filter housing then the oil pan.

Check everything Vehicular DIY mentioned and don't forget the valve cover gasket. Usually symptoms from that would be burning oil scent, smoke in the engine bay, and you may be able to see where the oil drips on the cat. Most common location is the back corner of the passenger side. I just changed mine three times and it was still leaking, I wound up finding a crack in the valve cover and had to order a replacement that should arrive today (hopefully). Common issue with N54 engines, among others. The trans pan on the auto is plastic so keep that in mind. Also keep in mind that you have AWD so you have front and rear diffs. Not to say those would be the culprit, but always worth remembering. Don't be scared of the car because you have 142k miles. I have 178k on mine - a 2007 (with JB4 always on map 5 and BMS DCI) and with meticulous maintenance, it still runs perfectly. Thus far on my car, I've changed the water pump/thermostat, valve cover and gasket, washer fluid pump, replaced the injectors, spark plugs and oil changes frequently (I don't use the car's oil change regimen because I'm not driving 15k on the same oil - but that's just me), replaced the coolant line across the top of the radiator, replaced the vacuum lines, and walnut blasted the intake valves (also an easy DIY with the right equipment that I would HIGHLY recommend if it hasn't been done or if you are unsure; I got the blaster from Harbor Freight and ordered the BMW wand tool and hose adapter on bavauto, but there was a MARKED increase in throttle response, power, fuel economy, and general drivability). Just a few suggestions to make sure you get to learn your car properly because they are GREAT cars!

Great Channel! One question, have you had any problems after using the Redline fluid instead of the ZF lifeguard? Just just bought a 2011 335D with 175K miles. Shifts fine but my daily commute is 100 miles, so thinking I need to change trans fluid.

Im on 99k without a gearbox filter and oil change. My cars throwing 4f89 code at me, gear ratio monitoring 3-4. I dont know what that means but im hoping the oil change will fix this. Will it?
@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY 6 жыл бұрын
I think it's referring to the gear change between 3rd to 4th gear. Perhaps is sensed minor slip. A fluid change plus resetting adaptations will be the first step.
@aibel99
@aibel99 6 жыл бұрын
Vehicular DIY resetting adaptations? What do you mean by this? Ive perfmored the oil change using your guide so thank you very much for that. I didnt really fill it up using the temperature method but i did engage the gears and leave the car running for atleast 10 to 15 min before topping the oil level up again. Im hoping that was enough inshallah. So at the moment, this code seems to have vanished!
@fractal_au7336
@fractal_au7336 6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it is more likely a B or C bushing has worn too much because no service was done earlier. A TCM reset will not correct that. With ZF's they have to be maintained well so don't always believe manufacturers "lifetime" sales marketing assertions. Research the Europeans experience and you will find that unless the oil and seals are changed regularly other mechanical wear problems emerge and it will cost big dollars to fix. Other than needing 50k maintenance the ZF 6HP transmissions are great engineering.

Hi first of let me say thanks for sharing your knowledge. This is a great video. I just have a question. Where do you download that software you used to check the temperature of the fluid? And is it very necessary to know the temperature to finish filling fluid up? Thanks again!
@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY 7 жыл бұрын
Check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoWUeKysmrJ-Zs0 Click the description. You could also just get a laser temperature gun to get an idea of when the trans is up to operating temp. Yes it is important to fill only when the transmission is up to full operating temp and it's also important to ensure that the transmission is not too hot when doing your final fill.

I'd say change it, the transmission adapts overtime. The chances of your clutches being burnt up due to lack of maintenance at 140k miles is low I would say. Better to give the transmission a chance by changing the fluid IMO.

They refused to do it saying it could do more harm than good. Can this procedure cause problems when done correctly?
@fadidan84
@fadidan84 6 жыл бұрын
It cannot cause harm, you'll shorten the life of your transmission significantly if you don't change the fluid, I don't mean to scare you, but that's what my experience has been with ZF 6hp19 transmissions, ZF (the manufacturer of these transmissions) recommends changing the fluid every 30k milies, 50k miles the latest.
