I moved to Japan to get out of my very bad environment and everybody was like 'this won't help you get better unless you don't get better inside', but it did almost a 1000%. I finally started therapy after moving here, which I wasn't able to do in my home country due to no therapists available for enormous amounts of time, I finally started working out regularly because my husband is someone who really enjoys fitness and I have never had someone around me motivating me this much without forcing me to change my mind about fitness in an instant and I have finally distanced myself from substances I would abuse almost on the daily, because Japan has extremely strict rules for everything except alcohol and tobacco. It might not work for everyone, but it certainly did for me.

One of the biggest obstacles for so many people is that we get discouraged by the small failures but what we don't realize is that small failures means we're also making small wins. Be proud of that. One thing I'd add is to enlist an accountability group or partner, having people with you turns it from a struggle into a journey. Wishing everyone a successful 2022 ✌️

We spend so much time in our minds overanalyzing *how* to change that we forget we're empowered to *simply decide that change will be easy for us.* My experience has been that whenever I found myself "hitting a wall" in new habits, I would overthink why I was hitting that wall. And that would put even more energy into "the wall" itself by researching it and thinking about it and of course everything just felt harder and harder and I'd give up. Real sustainable energy shifts happened for me when I kept re-directing my mind at the moments it wanted to go back down "this is hard" belief pathways. I'd remind myself with simple, repeatable affirmations like: "This is actually incredibly easy" "I love doing this" "It's easy to be whoever I consciously chose to be" "I easily control my own energy" etc and voila! Sustaining change became easy because I decided it so. Some may need different help with this but for me, *deciding it was easy made it easy.*

perfectionism has always been a huge obstacle for me--in terms of resolutions, if I didn't start the habit on January 1st I'd never start, and then first day I fell off with any habits I did start off the year with, it was the last day I'd do them. definitely trying to focus on a) letting go of perfectionism, and b) setting up systems so that my bad days won't completely derail me

Seriously - one of the best things I got out of poster's videos is the idea of "passing." So you dont have to be 100% perfect. Just pass your goal/habit. This really helped me get out of the procrastination due to perfectionism mindset and helped me step back from unrealistic goalposts I would set for myself. Go ahead and set your goal as high as you want. But realize that you just need to make a passing grade, not 100%. I cant remember the video he talked about this in.

You are always so spot on with your analyses, it's such a "I feel seen" experience every time I watch your videos. The way you described the "good you vs. bad you" really hit home. I wanted to start 2022 with as much positive energy as I could, yet I seem to have tripped already in one of those bad phases - avoidant, don't want to participate in life, just want to hide under a blanket and not talk to anyone or do anything, drowning in anxiety. It's been very discouraging and I definitely needed to hear some of these practical steps. It may take a while to get out of this funk, but it doesn't mean I can't make positive, valuable changes in my life when I start to feel better. thank you

I’m in my 30’s, but I’m now just starting to realize how perfectionism has negatively affected my life… not only from feeling bad about myself when I don’t complete projects perfectly, but also in the way that I stop doing things if I don’t have the perfect environment to do them in. For example exercising; I have a small living space that’s cluttered with inventory etc. for my small business, and I kept thinking oh I’ll just wait to start an exercise routine when I have more space… but now I’m trying to focus on what I can do even if I can’t do it perfectly. So, looking up exercise videos for small spaces. That’s going to be a huge shift for me this year.

Thank you for making videos like this. They're so accessible and relatable and inspiring. Your realistic, HUMAN alternative to "hustle culture" really helps to take some of the pressure off us recovering perfectionists who are still learning to decouple our self-esteem from our productivity. I also dig your approach to making art vs. "content" and am definitely going to apply your "one for them, one for me" tip to my work going forward.

I’ve just realised one of the things that makes your videos SO good. Many say that on social medias people just show the best part of their lives, but what they usually mean with that is just the “fun stuff” like parties and holidays. This, though, applies to productivity KZbinrs as well! We usually see them as someone that ALWAYS has everything under control and that makes sense, because they want to inspire you to become better. However, being honest and showing your defects actually makes you have more impact, because ewe feel like we’re walking together along the same path and sets realistic expectations for us to follow. Thank you for your videos man!

I don't catch all your videos, but when I do, I always come away with something good. 'environment is how you can outsource discipline' is my go to. If I'm not feeling especially motivated, if I can just get myself into my workshop, I'm good to go. That's why I put so much care and effort into the areas that I work in, because the environment is motivational enough for me.

This is a good integration of minimums. When I am working out, I sometimes procrastinate starting the next set even after my break is up. However, what stops me is that I am afraid I will fail, and I reason that I need this little more time to succeed. However, once I started to use the Rule of 1, it has changed my attitude. The rule is to just ell myself, "let's just do one. If we fail to keep going, that is ok, but we at least did something and that is better than nothing." Surprisingly, I always have the strength and motivation to keep going. I only need to start.

that January 19th date lines up pretty well with my experiences. A few years ago in college, I started using the gym in the fall when I started classes, because I wanted to get in shape. In the first week of January, the gym was packed with new year's resolution people. The next week, half of them were gone. The next week there were only 1 or 2 left, and by the third week, all of them stopped going to the gym. I was relieved when they stopped coming, because it was ridiculous. I couldn't use any of the equipment because half of them were sitting on the equipment while they were using their phones and not working out.

That was really helpful, loved the table. I've started mini habits. Doing a small version of something everyday. I've also taped an A4 sheet of paper on my desk with a list of goals down the left hand side and dates across the top and I fill in the boxes of each habit once I've completed something. If it's night and I realise I haven't done any exercise for example, I quickly push out like 10 push ups. I figure anything is better than nothing. *Happy New Year!* 🥳

My man I'm watching this on January 19th, this is a sign! On a side note, I am working on myself quite some time for now, but what I've come to believe is that change doesn't have to wait, it can happen right now. What matters is starting and learning from your mistakes. So most of my goals for this year are just simple things to improve what I've been doing already, like, be more consistent/spend more time doing what I'm already doing, with small things that just allows me to measure my progress more easily in one 1 (drawing everyday in a year agenda for example). Well, don't know where I'm headed with this one, but what I need to improve is making a consistent and fluid story. Now it's time to watch the video!

I didn't think that this past year was all that worthless but when I wrote it all out.... YIKES!!! The bad news is that I'm horrified/ashamed at how I could waste a whole year like that. The good news is that I kinda feel woken up to make sure this year isn't more of the same.

I got so nervous when I'm planning to have healthier choices in New year because I've failed, I don't know for 5 years in a row maybe. But I can find what works for me and make it possible. It's awesome and relieving.

You are the only youtuber whose videos I eagerly wait for. Keep it up, the content is great! On a different note, I also do yearly reflections and they've been so useful in recognising the growth: day by day you feel like you haven't made any progress, but then you look at those reflections and your journal and it turns out the progress is enormous and it's so good to see it over the years. My reflection is usually something like: 1) what were the main themes of every month 2) what I've improved on 3) what I got worse in 4) what I wish I've worked on 5) my learnings and flearnings to take into the next year

This video was pure genius. I am a new subscriber and as a rule I don’t just subscribe to anyone, I’ve probably only subscribed to about 12 channels. Basically they need to add value to my life, kind of like the minimalist buying a new item. However I watched one of your videos, then another, then I was hooked. As a creative graphic designer your videos are pure gold, you tell it like it is and you understand the creative brain and process. Every video, it’s like bam you’ve hit another amazing point. I think I have found my new creative muse. Thanks 😀

I wish I had these videos in the second half of 2021 and the beginning half of 2022, genuinely the worst year of my life. I only found this guy three weeks ago but already each time I have a rut since, I use his techniques and it creates a wave of motivation and clarity that lasts for the rest of the day. He's also just a comforting and enjoyable guy to watch, so thanks mate. :)

I’m loving your videos so much. I ditched New Years resolutions a few years ago as it just became demoralising. Now what works for me is a mix of focus and values. Last year it was (in a nutshell) Care, Clarity and Creativity. I remembered it and lived it throughout the year. This year I have added ‘Step into my Power’. I haven’t used the Compass but I think my process is similar. It’s fluid and unstructured but working for me.

Great video! Something else that helps me get stuff done: if the project is the main thing I have to do for the day, then it becomes huge and dreaded and I overthink it, but if I treat the same project as merely something that I just have to get done so I can move on to something else that I really want to do, somehow it becomes very manageable and I can knock it out on the way to the fun activity. I don't know why, but it works.

I have one thing to add to your wisdom… ideal/ best version still suggests a level of perfection…. I have started using my favourite version of me, and allows me to be 70% and happy and not the pressure of needing 100% perfect version

I really loved the table, it really helps to focus on reality and not being crushed by unrealistic expectations. A realistic plan is a fantastic start.

Soon as I finnished the section about the year compass book I new I'd need to fill more than one of them for the year in the same sort of "ideal"/"not ideal me" type of way. I've got bipolar so things change constanty for me. As a result I can never be sure of the last and legitimacy to my motivations. I've enjoyed ur every video of ur's I watched. They always help me structure things out, understand a dynamic to how some of these things could work out and explore the possibilities. Even if I feel the need modify things or don't end up actually completing any of the exercises throughout the videos, It would gets me thinking in the right directions. Thank u for uploading this (and all the others). I appreciate it.

A bit of advice that helped me achieve a lot of my goals in 2021 - start an accountability group and keep it small. Mine is limited to 5 people, once a week we post a little entry on Discord and we all have a unique channel. We don't have anything in common with our goals other than that we're all creatives who make stuff and want to be more healthy. It's a great way to consistently reflect on your goals that isn't too time consuming, and it's a nice way to keep up with friends. It also helps to have external feedback on which goals aren't serving you anymore vs. ones that you're struggling to meet. Wishing you all a happy, healthy, goal crushing New Year!

Man, I love all of your videos. I binged a ton of them earlier this year and then kinda fell off (you know how it is). Just catching this video now and it's awesome to see the production value continue to grow while the content remains insightful, succinct, and entertaining. Glad you're still at it. You're helping a lot of people.

Just ordered your book! So excited. Found your channel about a week ago and I’ve been obsessed ever since. The way you explain things is so digestible and kind and I couldn’t thank you more for what you do. You’ve really helped me in a moment of much indecision and desperation. Let’s just say, I’m glad I found you at 23. You are an inspiration.
