In the EU almost every electric car uses a charging connector called Typ 2 or CCS. Typ 2 is equivalent to level 2 charging and CSS is the hyper fast charging. Thus this the charging infrastructure across the country is consistent and no one has to be worried to get stranded 😊 That also makes it easier to open Elon’s Superchargers for everyone because it’s the same plug! In my opinion that’s the better approach to establish e-mobility. Btw awesome videos! I love this project!
@ExcelonTheFourthAvalonHeirs3 жыл бұрын
Even in EU, Tesla use CSS. But, some old model still use Tesla only charger plug. BUT, all of Tesla supercharger on EU there are two plug for each charger. Tesla and CCS.
@timtietz80013 жыл бұрын
The Part about Typ 2 being equivalent to level 2 is not exactly right. I can only talk about Germany as I am myself an electrician here. But we use 220V on our normal outlets and 16A which roughly gives us 3.5kW of Power when we just plug in to a standard outlet. The US uses 120V and 15-20A which roughly equals to 1.8-2.4kW hence the slow charging on a normal outlet. Level 2 charging in the US uses 2 Phases at 230V to get about 6kW of Power, which is a almost double of what we get at a normal outlet, but our „Level 2“ uses the houses 3 phases at 400V. Most home charging boxes are 400V at 16A which gets us 11kW of power but some boxes even support 32A according to math that gives you 22kW of power, but only a few cars have the capability to charge at 22kW AC because that needs a bigger and heavier inverter that just doesn’t make sense carrying with you as weight und your Car. So in short term the US level 2 is 6kW and the German (maybe EU) is 11kW (to if supported even 22kW). That is our standard, with many company’s like IKEA or grocery stores like Lidl putting up free to use 50kW DC chargers at their parking lot.
@Scoopta2 жыл бұрын
IIRC although I could be wrong, while tesla does use CCS inside the EU it's still tesla only due to the car handshake and billing situation...
@someoneelse76293 жыл бұрын
I'm not in the market for a charger at the moment, but the FLO looks really simple and great. I live in Sweden, where single phase is 240V and 3 phase is 380V and 30 years ago when we built the house, we imagined that it wouldn't hurt to install a 3 phase connection on the garage. It's soon going to be used to charge an electric car.

imagine seeing a hummer charging at a tesla fast charger surrounded by tiny model 3s...a sight to behold for sure!
@seanplace81923 жыл бұрын
If I'm not mistaken, that EVSE (charger) was hooked up with 10 gauge wire (Orange sheath, 6:35). 10 gauge is rated for 30 amps, but cannot exceed 80% load (24 amps). But the Tesla appeared to be drawing 32 amps at 7:55? I think your electrician misconfigured the EVSE for a 40 amp circuit.
@taylorlightfoot3 жыл бұрын
The Tesla was pulling 30, but yes you are correct. He reallllly needs to take this video down and upload a correction video calling to attention these mistakes as they can lead to your house burning down. Also of consideration is the wire gauge size feeding his sub panel. If he only had 10 gauge feeding the panel, he won’t ever be able to safely pull over 24A without first upgrading the wire feed to the garage sub panel.
@seanplace81923 жыл бұрын
@@taylorlightfoot At the very last second of the clip, the Tesla began drawing 32A, which would mean the EVSE was configured for a 40A circuit. From what I can tell, the sub panel is being fed by 8 gauge copper. Which would make it a 40A sub panel.
@eDoc20203 жыл бұрын
@@seanplace8192 What makes you think the feeder is 8AWG? Ground and neutral was connected in the subpanel so it was originally installed decades before modern color-coded Romex. Btw 40 amps is only the maximum for 8AWG when 60 degree parts are used. If 75 degree parts are used it would be rated 50 amps. But regardless of the feeder, I agree the EVSE still needs to be reconfigured for 24 amps max because of the 10awg wire and 30 amp breaker.

Great stuff like always!! Are you planning on installing a fast charging capabilities to the humvee? If so are you gonna use CHAdeMO or gonna install J1772 with CCS?

Fun fact: in the EU, Teslas come with industry-standard CCS2 connector (like USB-C for cars)
@ch4.hayabusa3 жыл бұрын
USB Type-C is a bad metaphor... USB 3.0 Micro Type-B is more apt, the huge clunky worse in every way connector. It's thinner, lighter, water cooled, higher power and as it has less contacts prone to corrosion, should be more durable. The patents for it are licenseable and the network will be opened later this year.

Next step: Add Wireless charging to the bottom of the jeep and a corresponding charging mat into your garage. I can't see any way this could go wrong.

Pretty sure couple companies sell stuff like that. But right now they are really hard to get. Maybe in 2025? :P

I think a much more practical solution would be a charging dock with wired contacts mounted on both ends.

Woah woah woah. You need to hire a better electrician and stop using that car charger at 30A! 10 gauge wire is rated for 30A, but when you are powering continuous duty loads you MUST derate down to 80%. That 10 gauge wire feeding your car charger is only safely able to provide 24A. You’re risking burning your house down and you’re risking other peoples safety if they follow the information in this video without knowing about derating continuous duty loads or voltage drop calculations that may require you upsize the wire even further.

how long does a usage can be defined as continuous..? non-stop exceeding 1 hour or how long...? not trying to be a smart ass, i really want to know

@@fist003 NEC Article 100 contains definitions. "Continuous Load: A load where the maximum current is expected to continue for three hours or more."

I don't think it's as bad as you're making it out to be. He has a 30a breaker on the wire so it is protected from overheating. It will be pretty useless because the breaker will trip after a few minutes but it won't set the house on fire. And in regards to the video being dangerous to others, it's really not. Anybody ignorant enough to blindly replicate this wouldn't have a way to know that 10AWG wire is used. It was never mentioned, I presume you only came to that conclusion because of the orange jacket.

Hey jerry I hope during a tense time these words stick in your head "You now have a vehicle capable of helping people in a disaster" With great power is great responsibility (and i hope the tow rating on that is enough to drag a semi out of the ditch and im sure it will be) I hope that you never have to use that power because of any disaster because just having to deal with a disaster is scary enough as it is. I hope you stay safe and enjoy driving this MONSTER EV around

What about the CCS connector? It is a combination of the J-1772 with two extra high power leads that are a direct connection to the battery. Glad to see FLO, a Canadian company, is helping out.
