Will My Electric Hummer Motor Spin?! - DANGER HIGH VOLTAGE!

Today its time to wire up the high voltage batteries to our Electric Hummer conversion. Working with high voltage DC Electricity is extremely dangerous. In todays Electric Humvee video we are going to install the VCU which gives throttle and gear selector commands to the inverter. Kind of important. When it comes time to wire up the batteries for real, we will have 450v with 100kWh worth of capacity. HUGE Thanks to Oshcut for laser cutting my mounts and battery box: app.oshcut.com...

Seeing him fail at first try, is the best thing ever. I mean, don t get me wrong, but when you re doing something so complex and everything works from the first try, it must be broken :))) Programming taught me that, it applies to everything. SOOOO many points here!!! First: Your voice is SOOO smooth to listen to! You could be explaining the benefits of converting pig manure into electricity, and I'd be able to listen without considering the detriments of the smell at all! Second: You have run into so many obstacles in this project, but not let a single one stop you from moving forward! Third: You PREDICTED point #2 way up front by pointing out that this is the first time you've done this, and you EXPECTED there to be obstacles! None of these obstacles have unreasonably slowed you down, and you point out what you've LEARNED from each one of them! In short, this has not only been a learning process for YOU, but for everyone that you're explaining the issues to! Very interesting to learn from each new obstacle AND accomplishment along the way!

This series has been total gold! Cant wait to see you finally get it rolling. When you make the loom, if you do it yourself theres a lot of great advice online, but i reccomend talc then a fabric strip like fibreglass or a fireproof fabric cut into a tape size strip wrap it around and . Talc inside to stop chafing of cables the fireproof fabric around the entire loom, Then tape it up like a handle of a tennis racket for example then put it in convoluted tubing. At the cable ends terminations etc. Use dielectric grease or at a punch vaseline use it around all your headlight connectors and every other electical termination or join. It will keep rust water and crap out of your connections. Not sure about the High voltage side of things but in general 12/24v evert offroader ive ever rebuilt ive done the same and it protects the loom and everything else. Id assume dielectric grease would be ok just check the spec sheet.

The magical sound of progress, I love the sound of spinning electromotors. Zach if you read this 200V is theoretically a low voltage but I appreciate you calling it a high voltage cause with these currents it is definitely dangerous. Love the project, keep up the good work.

There are many many things that are technically something, but he chooses to use wrong terminology. Like open circuit (O.L) somehow "flowing power". It's like hearing coworkers looking for a 500mA charger because they are afraid to "push more current into their phone, than the phone would accept." I attribute this to Zach trying to do this a) unscripted and b) attempt to use "laymen's terms."

I would recommend going back through the wiring and add a waterproofing so that you can go through more water if something leaks into the passenger area. Might as well go all the way for future protection. Not to mention, making the top of the hummer a solar array (if there aren't plans already), get that passive charge going for emergency use and to increase range.

in addition to that add an straight horizontal wire being perpendicular to the forward motion of car. Add many of them in series and use like 20 m of wire. Then if the car moves in any direction except N-S or S-N it would generate potential difference. In best scenario when the car would be moving in an E-W or W-E direction it would cut a magnetic field of 50 micro Tesla and generate a highest potential difference of about 0.1V if car travels at 100m/s 😂😂. I know that's highly inefficient that it won't be able to even turn on an LED but i just want to try this once, but i don't have anything to do that 🙂🙂

Safety. It's common practice to back with your foot on the brake. (and torque is limited in reverse.) EVs aren't like ICE cars; they have almost zero rolling resistance from the motor + transmission, so without brake or motor torque, they roll very easily. With the brake at "100%", [in drive] road vehicle rules say it must not apply torque. (I call it the Prius Rule(tm).) (and for the record, there are a lot of idiots that drive around with their foot on the brake.)

Loving seeing this series! Great progress so far, really looking forward to seeing this beast go on road, and off. Would an oil cooler for the diffs be needed considering how much more power will be going through them, and possibly higher speeds?

DMV doesn't care what powers it. You register it like it was still gas powered. Some states have mandatory inspections which might be an issue as there's no tailpipe to stick a exhaust sensor in, but you can always do the Vermont loophole and that buys you a few years to figure out how your state handles things.

@jarrodb
@jarrodb 3 жыл бұрын
@@vidznstuff1 I know they are liquid cooled. The issue I am not seeing an answer to is that they normally are laid out flat, not stacked. I am worried they cannot reject that much heat when stacked. Just asking if that has been thought through. I would think there is plenty of space to arrange them on the chassis to be more apart as to stacked tight.

Imagine if you hadn't forgotten about the brake switch and it went in forward anyway? Then when time came for the ground strap to become important you'd have to tear the whole dang thing apart to find out why you only had reverse in a year or two from now. I call that serendipity right thar.

Mate! Great to see you going through this step by step, and congrats on the milestone! Question; with all the space you have all over the hummer, why are you sacrificing the passenger footwell for the battery placement? Aren’t there many other places you can use? 🤔

It’s rly nice to see that even as projects scale to big things like this that not knowing what ur doing never really goes away. Having a bit of an imposter syndrome with projects can deter you from continuing because you feel you aren’t the one for the job but really no one is you just have to learn as you go. Rlly nice to see that not hidden in these vids
