There's a lot of confusing around charging retro handhelds and Ide like to give my input. Retro handhelds need retro chargers. Stick to slow chargers and you'll be okay. Always match the voltage and try to match or exceed the amperage. Fast chargers are not all created equal. They all have different protocols and are made for specific devices. Even iPhone 15 can be damaged by the wrong usb c fast charger. Look up some videos. If it can happen to iPhone it will happen to a budget Chinese retro handheld. Stick to slow chargers usb A to C for the cable. Just be safe.

Curious about using a samsung adaptive fast charger with a usb A 2.0 to C cable. The brick should be limited to 2.0 charging right? My fast charging phone and my non fast charging tablet seem to work fine apart from not fast charging the phone. I'm most likely gonna use my electric couch's usb port instead, since it's been charging my GPD XD well for a while now. Brick info. Mine is australian if that matters: MODEL: EP-TA200 INPUT: 100-240 V - 50-60 Hz 0.5 A OUTPUT: 9.0 V DC 1.67 A or 5.0 V DC 2.0 A

@HyperSonic1999orJTH It has a 9V lane. It could be fine, but the only way to know for sure is to test it. Plug it in and stay next to it to see if the device gets too hot. Charge it at your own risk, though.

Good stuff Javi, as a previous employee of a giant tech repair facility. We always recommended using oem charging cables and charging bricks according to device specifications. If not, at least name brand charging cables and charging bricks according to device specifications. If a device doesn’t have an oem charging cable and charging brick, then we always recommended name brand charging cables and charging bricks according to device specifications. But, when it’s all said and done at the end of the day, it’s your device, do as you please and thank you for the repeated business and keeping me employed. 😊👊

So I am going to share some info about batteries (LiPo in particular). Im an RC car enthusiast for about 10 years and in the last few years we use LiPo batteries almost exclusively for powering the cars. While charging LiPo batteries the rule is, that you shouldn't exceed 1C charging rate (e.g. 3300mAh in RG35XX+ charge max 3.3A). If you charge with lower current, you will get more charging cycles from the battery in the future. What can kill the battery is charging with higher Voltage than the battery itself. So propably RG35XX+ can't deal with higher voltage chargers, but dont quote me on that, I haven't seen the internal circuitry.

@@JaviPlayRetro I don't mind. This topic seems to be a touchy one for many, as I was aware before. Some people just think they know better. That's why I didn't engage too much with the guy on the content of your video; he wouldn't have been convinced anyway. I genuinely find your video excellent as it is. You took the effort to illustrate the differences through examples, such as how a China handheld gets significantly hotter with the wrong charger. You even used a measuring device to make these "invisible processes" visible. This dude on Reddit knows that these are valuable additional insights into things that many people have always wondered about, like "what exactly happens if I use the wrong charger?". However, he preferred to stir up trouble, and others jumped on the bandwagon. I don't care about that kind of stuff. He complains about others, thinks he knows it all, but would never take the initiative to upload his own video on the topic. Just a typical internet loudmouth.

Im thinking about getting a temperature reader and then hooking it up the fast charger and just leaving plugged in to see what happens. Javi FYI here are some formulas to demystify the charging conundrum. FYI I’m a retired Power Plant Engineer. Watts= Volts x Amps. Ambernic states 7.5 watts so the math 7.5watts divided by 5 volts= 1.5amps. So only use any USB chargers of 7.5 watts or less. Lithium Polymer batteries charge best and have the longest life expectancy when charged at or below specified temps. Also only charge to 80% as this will greatly extend life expectancy. Also try not to let battery go below 20%. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!!

Look, ma! The fast charger is the cable or the cube?

Volts * Amps = Watts. 5*2=10. The charging brick dictates charging speed. As long as you aren't using a garbage cable and very high watt charger, you are going to be fine. This mostly applies just to these cheap Chinese electronics as most quality ones will have internals that prevent the device from pulling more watts than what the device can safely handle. There have been issues with RG35XXH and SP being damaged by these fast charges.

I had the same question, but he showed at the beginning that he used one like that with multiple V and A, and he said his device reheated and didn’t recommended it, what I was thinking, and I myself don’t know about this, is that probably what happens is that the charger uses the higher V and A from where you are connecting it, so if the cube is receiving more than 5V=2A and he can receive more because it can adapt it will output the higher voltage, so probably is not recommended because of that, because how i think it works is that the Voltage is the amount of electricity the device receives and the Amps are the speed that the device receives the V, so even of your charger is 1.6A but it has a 9V it will damage your device because the device only handles 5V at the time and receiving 9V even if it is 1.6A it can warm up the battery

I don't know about 33 W as that is pretty high, but 5 volts at 3 Amps is only 15 W. Many charging bricks will tell their total charging capacity so if it has 2 different ports that each charge at 15 Watts it will say it's a 30 watt charger for example, but nothing plugged into it is going to get 30 watts. I have been using a 5v/3a usb c to usb c on my RG35XX (2022) since I got it and it has been fine but in hindsight it's probably not the best now that I see how cheaply the internals on these are made and they don't have overcharge protection.

In all fairness TECHNICALLY it should be ok to use a fast charger. Fast chargers usually default to 5v or don't output anything at all when charging if the device isnt telling it how many volts needs during the handshake. This obviously cannot be assumed for all though. The fact that these come with a USB C - USB A cable makes me think that that device isnt truly using usb c protocol, and is actually just a usb A pinout with a USB A adaptor on, meaning it doesnt support PD and will just take whatever it is plugged into provided the charger allows it. Personally I'd say just get a higher quality USB C - A cable so you know for sure that you're not getting higher outputs (i think only phone companies like Xiaomi and Oneplus utilise high voltages through Usb A, Old samsung chargers do too, but they do support 5v low amperage in my experience when there isnt a handshake for greater power draw), and use your computer or one of the an older Usb A charger like ones from Apple iPads because they dont support fast charging.
@JaviPlayRetro
@JaviPlayRetro 6 ай бұрын
The safest thing to do is just use a slow charger that just has a 5V lane. No 9V no 12V. Then you can ensure nothing will go wrong because it's not possible to draw higher voltages by accident or if the device miscommunicates with the charger. The software on these devices are notoriously bad, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them not being programmed to limit voltage.

Very interesting video. I am a bit of a tech savvy, but I can easily see my handheld explode while wife or son charges it... And big part of the general chargers (and data transfer... Though not so much applicable to the retro handhelds) mess is due to the USB type C "standard", which is... I don't want to use bad words so I will just say it's a mess. The type C is the attempt, in my view a badly failed attempt, at unifying everything charge/data related under one single standard. Issue is... Looking at the Power transfer, this should work across the board from 100watts laptop chargers to 5 watts headphones / flashlights / "toys" charger... Thus the multi-power and multi-voltage chargers. Probably in the mind of whomever thought this would work there was the idea that each and every appliance would have a very high quality (therefore high cost...) Charging circuit, that can tell the charger what voltage and current he had to provide. Of course... Not gonna happen for the cheapest devices!! There had been a simpler time when USB outlets were by standard all 5v, 1amp (or even 0.5 amps, can't remember). That is of course not sufficient for higher end devices, which at that time had specific charging ports (do you remember the coaxial plugs of laptops and... Literally any high power device?) Regarding the concept of having every device coming with a power brick.. the intent of type C was exactly to avoid this, and have much less e-waste produced, but again, failed. The defence we have now is... Keeping a couple of "stupid" chargers (ideally a 5v 1amp and a 5v 2amps should cover everything) for the smallest creepiest devices. Type C still remains kind of a dream but though "smart", it's surely not smart enough
@JaviPlayRetro
@JaviPlayRetro 6 ай бұрын
Type C was a colossal failure. There should've been a law to force all cables to be identical and a standardization for fast charging. Not 15 different fast charging protocols. Thats what I'm saying, not all Type C cables are created equal, not all fast chargers are created equal, a lot of fast charger are made for specific devices. Using the wrong charger on the wrong device can lead to problems. If the goal was to make every device use the same connector, we failed hard,
@frankysour
@frankysour 6 ай бұрын
@@JaviPlayRetro yeppp exactly. Actually, the connector itself was unified, true, but implied even more confusion and risk. If they at least were able to fix say... 4-5 levels of Power transfer, and same for the data transfer, and simply color code (or number code) them clearly (so that at least one could match the codes between charger/cable/device) it would have been a little better. Actual situation is just a jungle, where every producer uses same connector and wildly different tech features

1. These devices were made in China, so translation is not always literal.* 2. The label on the back is most likely referring to the cable provided in the packaging and not an actual charger. 3. It’s general knowledge at this point that Lithium (in this case it’s a Lithium Polymer hybrid) batteries explode when overheating beyond a certain point. Manufacturers have been putting warning labels all over packages containing Lithium batteries for years. (It’s not written that way on the label for reasons that are obvious as I have mentioned earlier - *)

it doesn't really need to come with one, they are just saying use one certified to your countries standards as every country has different standards and power networks. Also in fires batteries can explode and if they do its usually very violent. They just worded is poorly. it almost sounds like they are saying the battery will cause a fire that will have explosions lol

@@JaviPlayRetro yes stock OS brand new device right out of the box. Fixed now. I think the SD was slightly corrupted. At first the screen would not stay on either. Just 1 second at a time. It would shut off, of press power button, screen on for 1 second then off. I couldn't tell if it was a software issue or the magnets in the lid were messed up. But the first 2 days I had it, it was screwed up. I moved the SD to another Anbernic and since other handhelds and back. Now it charges and the screen works. Thing is fine 😁 Corrupted SD? Getting a SanDisk to replace it. Using a 5V-1.5A with quality cord now too. Even though, my USB voltage tester says my expensive quality 65W GAN PD charger says it's taking the proper 5V-1.5A that is supposed to. Just to be safe. Thank you for your help and advice. If these are cheap bootleg systems which they are, don't matter anyways the build quality probably wouldn't matter to which charger you use. And the part where it says may explode in a fire is self explanatory it's clear as day to what that means. You don't throw anything with batteries in a fire or it could explode especially lithium batteries they are highly reactive AF. Seen videos where people take lithium batteries take them apart get that foil that's in them and throw in fire then they explode, also they would throw in water and they also explode. So these are bootleg consoles so if don't come with a charger just charge with what you got they cheap just buy another when it dies. Even phones don't come with them anymore either they all assume people have way too many of them so your good charge it whatever you have

This video is primarily about keeping your handheld alive and more importantly safely. I have 2 kids in my house a 1 year old and 4 year old. What if I left that Anker charger alone and that handheld got so hot it explodes with them next to? Then I have a severely burned child. now what do I sue Anbernic thats half way across the world. No where in the device spec does it say supports fast charging. Just c to c. On the back of the device it say 7.5W and thats not fast charging. Just be safe. Please.
