There's a step that anyone using this test needs to perform first. Make sure that the edge they push the square against before drawing the line is straight and smooth. It's a common assumption that one of the sides of plywood as it comes from the factory are straight, but that's not necessarily so. Check it with a straight edge, not just your eye. Also, small bumps in that edge can throw off the square by some amount. Possibly as much as the difference seen when first checking the vintage try-square. So first, be sure the reference is straight and free of bumps, then use the method Luke demonstrates here.

Your absolutely correct, the edge definitely needs to be straight. I should have made that clearer in the video. Thanks for helping everyone out

My two cents worth,be sure to correct both edges of the blade, opposite removal of top or bottom, also check lines on a piece of mdf or particle board so your knife or pencil doesn’t follow the grain lines such as on plywood.cheers

I work as a carpenter but my hobby is hand tool woodworking at home. Strangely, my carpentry square (a basic Stanley combination type that has been battered daily for 40+ years) is dead square but none of my good quality hobby ones are - it should be the other way around. My best try square is way out of square (so it's not really my best, just my most expensive), so will have to fix that, if I can be bothered because I don't use try squares much. Try squares remind me of school woodwork lessons and apprenticeship, like bench hooks and shooting boards - and wood lathes, I hate lathes and power sanders. Far too messy...! 😐

Sounds a little frustrating. But maybe it has something to do with the design of a combination square vs a try square. I have found my combination square doesn't go out of square either (igaging) even though i have dropped it more times than i like to admit, but my traditional try squares do.

@@AussieWoodshed Igaging is good stuff. I use their little double square and it's dead on. A very handy tool.
