This is a detailed instructional video on how to properly check and adjust the valves on my 2014 Yamaha TW200. It is the same for for all the years of the TW200 since the engine has remained pretty much the same besides the addition of an automatic cam chain tensioner, electric start, and the deletion of the kick start. let me know if you have any questions and thanks for watching!

valve clearance (cold) spec:
Intake: 0.05 -0.09mm (0.002 - 0.004in)
exhaust: 0.11 - 0.15mm (0.004 - 0.006in)
torque specs:
locknut: 14Nm (10.3ftlb) (123.6inlb)
valve cover bolts: 10Nm (7.2ftlb) (86.4inlb) *****update, the manual says these bolts are 10nm and I have always tightened them down to that. But last time I checked my valves the lower bolt for the exhaust valve cover did not want to tighten down to spec like the others. I quickly stopped turning the bolt so I didn't strip it out, it is still plenty tight for now. but I would strongly recommend you tighten these bolts down to only 7nm (5.2ftlb) (I will make a video on this next time I adjust the valves)
Blind plugs: 7Nm (5.1ftlb) (61.2inlb)
fuel tank bolt: 7Nm (5.1ftlb) (61.2inlb)

TDubsKid, I recently bought an abused 2010 TW because I want my two teens to learn to ride and wrench. Your channel is a godsend...these videos are amazing. My 19 year old, who had literally never heard of a torque wrench followed this video step by step (except your advice on the throttle cable removal...that was an hour of my life I’ll never get back) and set the valve clearances perfectly. Experiencing success on a first time task like this is the difference between someone saying “f@&k it, this sucks” vs “wow, that was pretty cool”. Keep doing what your doing and remember and know that your hard work is not only greatly appreciated, it’s inspiring. Finally, shooting a quick how-to on that throttle cable reassembly would be super helpful since anyone taking off the carb may experience serious frustration trying to do it on a trial & error manner, since the service manual doesn’t include the process.

Thanks 👍 glad to help, yeah plus you know how it was done and if it was even done right, most shops are flat rate so Techs are incentivized to work as quickly as possible. plus some techs have no idea what they are doing and screw stuff up, some are really good, it's a roll of the dice. i'm in the automotive industry, I imagine motorcycle shops are similar

Adjusted ex. valve. Adjusted chain, changed oil and filter. Sounds great. Surprising amount of metal in screen and filter. First oil change of its life. I used a KREG screw for the adjustment tool on the valves. It worked GREAT!!!. I broke off 3/4 inch and stuck it on a small piece of rubber hose, with BluRTV....great tool !

My friend gave me an 03 or 04 tw200. Which I'm super thankful about it because I was really in need of a vehicle that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg for gas. let alone my very own vehicle. He told me it needed a valve adjustment and a timing chain adjustment. my dad and I noticed the lines on the bottom were way off when the piston was on top. we both gave it a whirl but forgot to tighten the bolt down on the sprocket up top of the motor. Which it caused some serious issues the valves bent, the arm of the valve tad bit on the intake snapped, dalve pin was shredded off a couple other things happened. Anyway we got all the OEM parts for the bike about last weekend and got it rebuilt again everything was fine. We even broke in the motor before anything else. When we checked the oil flow on the top end it was all good. I thought it was a little odd though that there was more compression than usual but it still started right up with one turnover. Yesterday I took it out for a ride and the temps were going really high. aaand when it was immediately cooling down was when the motor was boogging down trying to shut itself off. And oil was everywhere the bike was smoking. I immediately used the kill switch to shut off the motor. we forgot to screw the bolt down that checks for oil flow on the top end. And thankfully the screw was still somewhere on the bike when it was towed home. Now it needs a valve reset and I'm hoping that there's no other issues on the rise. like bent valves or screwed up piston. I did try valve adjustments today to see if I can do it. Or if it'll help any. I made it worse lol as soon as I heard the ticking was worse than before I know I don goofed but I immediately shut it off after a couple seconds. So I left it there. Anyway would you happen to have any advice? I really want to take care of this bike and my dad is too tired and sick to help me with it. Thank you for your time! :)

Excellent video. I did not have the special tool and used needle nose pliers. That works too, but took me a couple of tries to get it just right. Now time to clean the carb because I think my problem is the pilot jet, but I thought I would do this service while I had it apart. Turns out it was time as I was 0.005 on the intake and probably 0.07 on the exhaust (strangely I don't have a 0.007 gauge it goes from 0.006 to 0.008), so it was time. I ended up 0.003 on the intake and 0.004 on the exhaust (about).

Thanks for the great video. I would like to point out something, though. In the video description you list electric start as a feature that was added on the later TWs. In fact, every TW200 ever built came with electric start. The first 13 years of production had both kick and electric.

Thanks, Wes. I followed your instructions for changing my oil and just checked my valves at 601 miles. I did not have to adjust as the intake and the exhaust valves were within spec at the maximum clearance, plus I was worried if I adjusted anything it would turn out wrong. One thing I noticed is that the shaft had variable resistance while rotating and just when I was about to get to top dead center it would suddenly rotate faster on its own (it felt like something dropped a bit). The only way I could get top dead center was to rotate clockwise for a couple degrees after it rotated counterclockwise on its own quickly. You mentioned that it was harder to rotate with the spark plug in, but I didn't take the spark plug out. Wonder if that is a unique feature of my TW which is a 2021. Also, I believe my valve cover bolts were overtorqued as they were hard to loosen and when tightening to spec (difficult with the clearance there), they were no where near as tight as when I started. I did not loosen the valve locknut but wonder if that is overtorqued as well. You do such a great job with these videos. I hope you keep them up.

@@TDubsKid Thanks, definitely felt weird trying to get to top dead center and had to rotate multiple times before I could be sure I was in the right place. I couldn't find a video of replacing the brake rotor or pads on the TDub by you. Would you post a video for those like me with no mechanical experience? Thanks
@TDubsKid
@TDubsKid 2 жыл бұрын
@@DianneGerrity yeah that's normal. takes a few tries to get it sometimes. yeah better to not make the cover bolts as tight. did you see my update on those torque specs? I woun't worry about the tappet nut if you didn't loosen it. that one is extremly important to torue to spec. I will once I need to replace them. I have over 17,000 miles with original brake parts. they last a very long time unless you do tons of heavy braking for some reason
@DianneGerrity
@DianneGerrity 2 жыл бұрын
@@TDubsKid I did see the updated torque spec for the valve covers, thanks. Have a feeling I won't be needing to change out the brakes for a while as I am not an aggressive driver at all. Well, maybe, I let my son take the bike and he and his friends rode it....

This is a super helpful video-I just ordered a valve/tappet wrench so I can do this more easily at home. Have you adjusted your jetting at all? I know the TWs generally run pretty lean from the dealer/etc. Mine sounds/feels like its running at least a little lean (hearing some popping/etc. during down shifting and what not). I know you installed the DG exhaust, so curious if you had to also adjust jetting at the same time? It'd be great to have a TW specific video on jetting/etc. Thanks for all the great maintenance videos.
