How to Check DSG Oil Level of Modern Automatic Transmission Top Up ATF Fluid Audi TT S Tronic

A short guide how to ensure that the ATF fluid of your modern automatic transmission is correct. If your transmission is clunky or shifts hards, the oil level is the first thing you want to check. There is no simple dipstick for checking the oil level, like for example engine oil. See the video how I do it and share your thoughts.

One thing I do is this: I have a simple manual pump which i used to pump DSG oil in my GTI Ed30. I put the oil thru the plastic housing inside and when it started do leak back it's the moment to stop because it reached the maximum level. Then I turned the car on until it reach the operating temperature (37ºC is enough). This is really important because oil needs to spread out to every where in a uniform way, and to do that oil pump must work and, with the help of moving parts and a warmed oil, you can have that uniform distribution. Tipically Oil is too low, but sometimes is overfilled. It's a question of interpretation: if leaks after beign warmed chances are you put too much Oil and it leaked the excess. If doesn't leak anything chances are it's low. With car running just add a little bit over time and see if it leaks. When starts to leak you stop and it's done. If you still ear strong noises (rattles, etc) in gearing or moving like D to N, specially in a warm gearbox, after a Oil Change, chances are you need a new clutch kit

Just to add more one thing: If you start to listen to some noises in your DSG maybe it's just a calibration problem. You can "reset" the positions to factory values. I had to do it once and it solved. For that you will need a computer with a connection OBD-II to your car. This is valid for ANY automatic gearbox from VW/Audi since 2003. I recommend use VCDS.

Got the oil from Amazon (see description) for 10 eur/liter, febi bilstein 39070. This is the oil the audi shop recommended me (was apparently stock oil) for the TT when I called there. ps. DSG Oil is very "liquidish", very watery, not viscose as engine oil. If you are changing oil, change filter as well (every 75k).

Hi, can you please explain how you jecked up the car in the 4 jack stands? expecially in the rear.. I'm able to jack it up in the front using the standard jackup points and the suspensions round point, but i don't know how to make it up to the rear
@sunkazz
@sunkazz 4 жыл бұрын
I've jacked it up at the place where a shop lift/hoist lifts the car (at the side frame). Obviously had a rubber pad in between the jack lift and the car. Then placed the jack stand on the standard points. Start with both front, then both rear. Be careful, take you time. If you remove wheels, put them under the car for safety. In the rear, look a bit deeper towards the middle of the car, there is a "triangle" shaped frame thing, you can lift it there.

Sorry about the question not relevant to the ATF, do you happen to know where is the thermostat of the MK2 TT and any ideal how to replace it? Many thanks.
@sunkazz
@sunkazz 6 жыл бұрын
Well, this will not be a simple job, because it is quiet hard to get to it. Thermostat is below the alternator, under a black hose. You need to remove plenty of hoses and components to get there. Then you will need to flush the antifreeze as well. If you anyway decide to do the job, just google for thermostat replacement, majority of audi cars have very similar design.

so i was wondering if the method of proper filling by running engine to 35c and then dropping oil to drip would work with the top-fill-method through the filter hole. this video helped me understand that it should be possible but im still concerned because this reason: they fill the bottom of the black plastic with oil. they add lets say 5l and let the rest come out. but if im filling from the top, wouldnt i not be able to put 5l in because i cant put any in the bottom, so it would overfill on top?
@flute136

or do i not need the oil in the bottom? the black plastic will hold the level that i fill, but then what do i fill to? till the very top of the filter hole basically?
@sunkazz
@sunkazz 2 жыл бұрын
@@flute136 No, I any case you need to open the drain hole to expose tube to drain the excess. It is just easier to pour in oil from top, instead of pushing it up from the bottom (you also need a special tool for that), see other video of mine.

Hello! I just watched your video and is great! I have the same exact car, I have a very casual question for you. gear 1 and 2 feels a bit hard and 2 to 3 shifts a bit pushy. I also notice that 1 and 2 gears uses quite a lot of gas. Is this normal?
@sunkazz
@sunkazz 3 жыл бұрын
If you feel that its hard when you don't pay attention to it, then it is not good, otherwise old Stronic are sometimes a bit hard in 1 and 2, especially when throttle is low. Try giving it plenty of gas, if its fine, then its ok.
@exklimexklim

dr. sunka thanks for your answer! Do you think the ECU reset (Gas Pedal) works or is just a placebo effect. www.youcanic.com/guide/audi-transmission-ecu-adaption-reset-procedure
@sunkazz
@sunkazz 3 жыл бұрын
@@exklimexklim The gas pedal method is to reset electronic throttle, so that you reset min and max values. That can obviously help to sync throttle and transmission. But I would do it via VCDS, since you get feedback if the reset was successful or not, and you can cross-check values in life measurements.

Hello my friend, my dsg7 is very clunky after basic settings, top up the oil can make it smoother?
@sunkazz
@sunkazz 6 жыл бұрын
If you have recently changed the oil, this could be an issue yes. But if the transmission suddenly became clunky, then there could be other issues, like e.g., mechatronic. Ps. Do not expect that the automatic transmission will be always perfectly smooth. Mostly, when you constantly slowly moving the throttle while the transmission wants to shift, it will be clunky. Also in very low RPM it happens to be clunky. This is normal.

@@sunkazz thanks for ur reply, all I did was basic settings so maybe the mechatronics unit is faulty but there is no codes so I'm confused. This gearbox was always clunky but it got worse so the first thing that came into my mind is oil when I hear too much clunks (on downshift actually) top up the oil will be a waste of time?
@sunkazz
@sunkazz 6 жыл бұрын
You can try it, don't have much to loose. But the transmission system is closed, so oil couldn't get out if everything is fine. In my case the shop did not fill it properly during the oil change, so I had to top it up. Yes, typically the most notable clunks are one downshift in manual mode.

If it is running ok don't touch it is very bad advise! This gearbox need maintenance. It needs oil and filter every 60k. Never refit a dirty filter! Remember new oil is cheaper than a new gearbox.

Yes, actually you can. Let it run in park for a while to warm it up, then put it in reverse for 20 or 30 seconds like your supposed to do and then the same in drive and then push it over into the +- mode and the temp will appear in the screen. I just did it with my Ross tech hooked up and the temp on the dash matched it perfectly! I got 44deg on both methods. I didn’t believe it would work either because nobody else had ever said it, but he is 100% correct. Lol. Thanks buddy! We learn something new everyday, if we remain teachable that is!
