⁠​⁠@@RabbitryandYarnsI have a bunny that has had a batch of babies before but I wasn’t home and she didn’t have the best set up she panicked and the babies didn’t make it and were scattered, last night she had another litter this time she had a proper nesting box but there was another female in the pen that pushed her off the nest after she had had a few babies those ones didn’t make it, she ended up having the rest of them in the space between the nesting boxes but because the space was small she ended up squishing some in the process. In all she probably had around 12 babies but only 5 survived. I pulled the other rabbit out and moved the babies to the nesting box but I recently checked them and they are warm but are looking a little wrinkly and I don’t think she’s fed them yet. I just don’t know if I should give her more time or if I should intervene now.

Beautiful. I had such a beautiful kit last year. Only one of them was not feeding well. I ended up hand feeding but one of my rabbits grew up ..I was told was a boy was actually a girl and she gave birth but we lost all of them within 3 days. I am heartbroken.😰 She was not nursing and by the time I intervened it was too late.

Great question. Warm is excellent. Some differences do exist between bunnies. Some bunnies in a litter may drink more than others. Some may struggle to get enough. Some mom bunnies only have tolerance for feeding for so long. Others are more patient.

There options for keeping bunnies warm. First determine if the baby bunnies are warm. Simply touching them will tell you if they feel warm or not. If they feel cold, you can determine if you want to remove them from mom and keep them in a house, in a warm place or if you want to keep them with mom, to add more hay and/or clip fur from her to add to the nest. Energetic is a good sign. If you can look down at them, you will be able to identify many wrinkles or limited/no wrinkles. It will look like folds of the skin, as if there is ample extra skin.

Is the nest properly built? Are their bellies round and with visible milk? Do they have wrinkles on their skin? If they are cold, wrinkled, no round belly and no visible milk, supplement with kitten milk.

Razzle Dazzle Rabbitry & Yarns LLC so she started with 8 and now only ones left ☹️ four days old and their bellies weren’t too round, nest was okay but it was a surprise birth bc I want aware she was pregnant so I take full responsibility for this. she stopped feeding the last one so I’m feeding it and made a new nest to keep it warm. I feed around 5am & 10/11pm , is this good?? I’m trying my best and I’m so heartbroken over the litter passing. It’s bunny mamas first litter so I’m going my best to help her out

My Holland lop had 7 babies. Today they are 5 days old and there are 2 that are a lot smaller and do not have full tummies. Today I held their mom still and let them eat but i think 1 of them is having trouble latching . What should I do ? Should I wait or should I start feeding him got milk ?

Rarely do we see the mom rabbits feed. It is usually 2x a day and that is it.

If you have developed a bond and trust with the mom rabbit, it is highly unlikely she will reject them.

The mother should feed the babies, but it does not always happen. If you have babies that die with empty tummies, it can be a variety or reasons. The mom may not know what to do, too much wool in the way, no milk coming in. Each of these issues must be investigated as best as possible. Further considerations include the diet of the mother and the environment. If you note no full tummies within one day of birth, it is necessary to intervene to keep the babies alive.
