IN ADDITION TO THIS VIDEO: On the inside, play with every button, to make sure they work. Check to make sure ALL the cluster guage lights that are supposed to come on when you turn the key on ( NOT START), do come on. KNOW THE LIGHTS YOU ARE LOOKING FOR!!! EXTERIOR WISE- Inspect all lights & turn signals, flashing lights, oil leaks, loose bumpers, worn tires, open/close hood & trunk for ease of operation. Ditto for all doors. Check Window & windshield glasses for tiny/large cracks. Under hood--- Check ALL FLUIDS for condition & levels. Check A/C system, and RUN IT!!! One time at the auction, I found a clean condition used Cirus Lxi w/o an AC system. Got a great deal on it, and drove that thing for 18 yrs w/o the air. Check all lines for rusts and leaks, check for missing parts or rigged up parts. If you service your own cars, check how easy it will be to change the rear plugs, or work on the car? Think Labor time= Mo $$$ to fix, or to maintain. I hate that F-150s have 4 Cat converters. Why not 2 like GM trucks? Anyway, look for RUSTS ANYWHERE & everywhere. This may indicate flood issues, or a harbinger of bad things to come. Rust, water, & electronics, DO NOT MIX! Bottom line; DON'T BUY SOMEONE ELSES HEADACHES!!! Especially the things that are expensive to fix on any car. Know those things for each vehicle you are interested in. Then have a mechanic like Scotty, check those susceptible systems. Specifically tell the mechanic about those systems, or items you would like him to check out. Write the items out, and give him /her the list. They may forget to check something if done by verbal instructions only. Most IMPORTANTLY: HAVE THE MECHANIC JACK UP THE CAR, AND FULLY INSPECT THE UNDERCARRIAGE FOR ANY ISSUE. THIS IS A MUST. DO NOT BUY A VEHICLE WITHOUT THIS INSPECTION. FINALLY, IF A VEHICLE LOOKS LIKE IT WASN'T WELL MAINTAINED, BE CAREFUL. BUYER BEWARE! ASK THE SELLERS WHY THEY ARE SELLING. DOES HE MAKE SENSE TO YOU? DO YOU GET FEELINGS OF TRUSTWORTHINESS? THIS IS THE BIGGEST THING WHEN BUYING. REMEMBER, SELLERS ARE LIARS! BUYERS ARE LIARS ALSO WHEN BUYING AT A DEALERSHIP. KNOW WHAT IS, OR NOT A DEAL BREAKER. THERE IS A SCIENCE TO ALL OF THIS, AND SOME GOOD LUCK. I SOLD CARS FOR OVER 40 YEARS. BEST WISHES FOLKS!

Check the condition of the foot pedal rubbers, gear stick knob (on a manual), steering wheel & seat covers. If you're buying a fairly low mileage car and there is significant wear on those parts, it has probably been clocked and has done a lot more mileage than is recorded.
@johnbaker49157 жыл бұрын
It's fairly common in cities for the owner to disconnect the sensor for the odometer as they travel at slow speed so don't need to worry about speeding. Then when they sell it, they plug it back in and the mileage is the same as the day they bought it. Be especially wary of cars typically used as Taxis such as Crown Victorias or Toyota Camrys
@NeverTalkToCops16 жыл бұрын

Just to add into inspection, you may wanna look inside the car as well. Make sure A/C and heat work properly since they could be an expensive fix other than refrigerant. Twist all the knobs till defrost, check radio, instrument cluster if the guages are working, All lights and turn signals, horn, any power seats adjustments, windshield washer knobs with spraying washer fluid, turn your wipers on to test wiper motor, check any power mirrors, windows and door locks etc. Those switches aren't that cheap. If you can, must take the owner to local auto parts store and test the battery, alternator and starter to see if anything is bad. Must test drive the car even though it looks great. Don't take owner's words. Also if possible, take it on freeway for handling test. Must take your time to avoid future surprises. All flaws would be your bargain points. Thanks scotty for your help. This very simple check can tell you alot about a Car and how the owner took care of it. Check the condition of the Oil if it looks like it's been changed regularly. Check the radiator and make sure the coolant is a bright color and not rusty looking . And last but not least check the Transmission Fluid and make sure it's not black!If it has no pink in it?It will be very obvious the person never cared for the Transmission and if they never cared for the Transmission? then it will be very clear they never took care of the car! This is something nobody can hide and a Carfax can't provide just checking these 3 things can tell you everything about the car that you can't see and they can't hide it and if these 3 things are completely neglected?It's a clear sign to walk away from the car as the car is bound not to last and have future problems
@unyascorpion9 жыл бұрын
This is truly great advice... but if we are watching this video is because many of us 'may' skip the mechanic visit... If this is the case then he left out some very important info. Just a few I can think of: Check the motor oil. Look beyond the level and color of the oil... and see if the rod itself has an unusual black casting color... this would indicate that the car either ran with low oil at one point.. or it went too long between oil changes. Do the same with the transmission fluid (most importantly in auto transmissions). In automatic transmissions... the oil should be that of a cherry red color. If it's not... it means that the transmission has never been serviced and depending on the mileage of the vehicle... transmission failure could be eminent despite of you servicing the transmission at that point. During the test drive.. you want to make sure the transmission shifts smoothly and there isn't any humming. For the engine.... you want to make sure it has the proper power and it accelerates properly. I hope this helps the viewers and thanks for the good video.

4:00, 1. Check for smooth shifting in transmission 2. Check whether each mode on the A/C works fine.* 4:10, I agree, but if it is a premium or luxury car, spend the 90-200$ and give it to the dealer, for point inspection. Talk a deal with the owner of the car, if the inspection passes, you'll pay for it, else, either you pay half the cost or you'll walk away. Anyway, thanks for the video, Scotty. * I tested on a hot day and the guy blasted the A/C at speed: 4, later I brought the car home and found out, speeds: 1 and 2 don't work.
@noobtube12109 жыл бұрын
Such good advice.... I wish I watched this video ahead of time. I'm not bad with cars but I never thought of going as far to bring a scanner because I thought I could at least see signs or hear issues. Just got out of boot camp and I bought this altima 2nd hand as is 100k miles and it drove perfect during the test drive and it was fairly new under the hood, but the next day it turned off on me while i was driving on the freeway and did so more frequently. Turned out the car had eletrical issues that cost more than the car was worth to fix. If only I brought a scanner...I never figured out what was wrong with it and neither could the mech's i brought it too. There was a bunch of electrical issues that popped up on the scanner but non of them were specfic enough to diagnose the car. However; it would of been enough info to tell me to stay away from this car. I ended up stranded at this mall took a taxi home and it got towed because it was at the place too long. I told the tow company keep it I aint paying 200 bucks to get that pos back. I spent the rest of my tour without a car and not able to drive around paradise (oahu) and had to bum rides off people all the time. Long story short.. get a scanner if your buying 2nd hand, it's the problems you can't hear or see that are worse than anything you can diagnose off hand.

Posted this on the YourMechanic tips video, but I wanted to include it here too. Young people, old people, ALWAYS do a pre-purchase inspection on a vehicle. I've done it for my last 3 major purchases and it was so worth the 120 bucks my mechanic usually charges. I just bought a '92 Yukon for 3,000, the owner wanted 3,800 but upon a pre-purchase inspection, my trusted mechanic found that most of the lines were worn out, the rotors in the brakes were too small, there was lots of leakage, and it would cost me around 2,000 bucks to repair. Now the guy wanted 3,800. I got it for 3,000. $800 was saved thanks to 4 hours of labor and a $120 inspection. And what happens if you don't? I bought a '97 GMC Jimmy for $500 (which should have been an immediate red flag, but no, me had to be big and dumb and buy a 4x4 for 500 bucks.) the brakes were not good, but I didn't expect it to be much worse than another 500 bucks - $1,480 later, and eventually the muffler, that thing was a lesson learned....ALWAYS DO THE PRE-PURCHASE INSPECTION!! Always! ALWAYS!!!

Every single person in Europe does it. Only those who are mechanics /really stupid/or dgaf about their cash will check the cars themselves. Go on. Let's not forget to make sure the 4 tires match. If it has two Goodyears and two Bridgestones, my spider sense starts tingling. Although, honestly, a car with mismatched tires is more likely to have two Longyears and two Rockstones, all made in China.
