One thing I'd like to point out is that the overflow tank is not pressurized as he's saying in the video, so you can open it when the car is hot. However, do not open the pressurized radiator cap when hot. Some cars do not have an overflow and the only cap to refill coolant is the pressurized radiator cap...again, not to be opened when hot.
@njsongwriter2 жыл бұрын
But don't add coolant to a hot engine. Why? Because the "Full" & "LOW" marks on the reservoir are only accurate when the engine is cold. Add coolant only when the level is at or below the low mark on the reservoir when the engine is cold. Add coolant to bring the level up to the full mark (again - when the engine is cold).

Thank you. I just had an oil change at a local tire shop and they were supposed to check all of the fluid levels. I just added a lot of washer fluid and noticed my coolant level is right at the low mark, so I doubt if they added any. Even if it were halfway between low and full I'd be happy, but it doesn't look as if they checked the reservoir.
@njsongwriter2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't trust a tire shop to use the correct coolant or the correct ATF. I'll top off my own fluids; thank you very much. Coolant level should only be checked or topped off when the engine is cold.

Is it normal for engine coolant level to drop with time? If so how much is considered normal?
@sashbar Жыл бұрын
What nobody says is how cold the engine should be. Sometimes you just can not wait for 6 hours for it to cool down completely. So what if it's not cold, but, let's say 50 C? Or if it stayed parked for a couple of hours and now feels warm to the hand? Why exactly is it not recommended to top up coolant when the engine is hot - because of the danger to get burned or because of the possible damage to the engine/ cooling system as well?

@njsongwriter2 жыл бұрын
Only check coolant level when the engine is cold. If it is at or below the "LOW" level then add coolant to bring it up to the "FULL" mark. Nevermind what level the coolant is at when the engine is hot.
@laserdiscbeatz9846 Жыл бұрын
It is normal to have the coolant level slightly above the reservoir when the engine has not been turned on. Start the engine and let it warm up, then check your reservoir while the engine is running and the coolant level should be near the max mark on the reservoir. Imagine you add more coolant to the reservoir which you didn't have too, you will see coolant spilling out from the reservoir cap while the engine is running. Keep that in mind.

No... The reservoir is connected to the radiator. However, if the reservoir was empty and you filled it to the full line when the engine was cold then after you've warmed up the engine to full operating temperature then you should re-check the level while the engine is cold on the following day as it is possible that the cooling system siphoned coolant out if the overflow reservoir.

@shessoheavy61305 жыл бұрын

@findingnory4 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree and would like to provide folks clarity. The two are connected. The overflow reservoir holds the excess coolant from the radiator as the levels naturally fluctuate over time, eg. The overflow. That intrinsically means the two have a relationship.
@jsephhd4 жыл бұрын
Why do people add water?
@conorbrown59963 жыл бұрын
Late reply but better late than never. Water because it works quite well at cooling an engine. It would be used without the coolant mixture if not for its boiling point and tendency to free. The coolant is used to compliment waters already existing usefulness. Using coolant alone would be harmful as it has a lot of chemicals. Hope this helps!
@InShotProductions3 жыл бұрын
yep. (I'm not as expert) but water alone generally can get you out of an emergency situation, ie get you home, but shouldn't be used longer than that. As water alone goes through the head it can boil, as it changes state to a gas (steam) it can create pits in the head which can eventually lead to a blown head gasket or even needing to replace the head. Same thing can happen if you buy premixed coolant that is not strong enough concentration for your cars needs.

How do you get to hell? Very simple: claim that you're innocent. How do you get to heaven? Very simple: Admit that you're not Innocent, you're guilty and ask for mercy. How to know if you're guilty or not? Simply: Compare your life to the Ten Commandments God gave you in the Bible. Everyone agrees that if people followed the ten commandments there would be no need for governments or police. Do not lie. Do not steal. Do not commit adultery. Do not insult God by using his name as a cuss word. There are six more but let's just leave it at that. How many lies have you told in your life? Have you ever taken anything that didn't belong to you? Jesus said, if you look at a women lustfully you've already committed adultery in your heart with that woman. How many times a day do you do that? Do you use God's name as a cuss word? Would you do that with your own mother's name? If you answer these questions honestly you know that you're guilty. God can justly punish you and send you to hell. Ask him for mercy. His name is Jesus. It's as simple as this, The Ten Commandments are called the moral law. You and I broke God's laws. Jesus paid the fine. The fine is death. Ezekiel 18:20 - "The soul who sins shall die. That's why Jesus had to die on the cross for our sins. This is why God is able to give us Mercy. Option A. You die for your own sins. Option B. Ask for mercy and accept that Jesus died on the cross for you
