Phenomenal video! thank you! I could not get a drop of blood from my ACD Dallie using the device that comes with Accutrak 3. I made an appt. with our vet to show me how to do it. A vet assistant said they normally use a lancet instead of a device but when he tried to get a drop of blood from her paw pad, even he couldn't do it. But your tip to prick fast and anywhere in the ear was what I didn't understand and will try again today. Otherwise, I'll have to go with the costly Libre system.

Nice video, I use Libre with Blucon and love them to control my blood glucose values. The alarms are nice and loud enough to wake me up. You can adjust your BG ranges to whatever you want. The best part of blucon is I can calibrate it for higher accuracy!

I can't believe you would even suggest someone cut their dogs nail to the point of bleeding to check BG level. Why would anyone put an animal thru more pain then they have to? If that is a last resort go to a veternarian and get blood drawn and make sure the veternarian you choose does not ever cause unnecessary pain on your dog.

I cant get enough blood from my dogs ear. I've tried warming his ear and massaging. Nothing works. He wont let me near his mouth or paws...is there another area to try to get more blood?

I use my dog's carpal pad. It works well. We also use lancets to control how deep the prick is.

My vet uses a human freestyle libre lite.... she measured in the office with the libre, and also sent out blood for other testing (but had them verify the sample for glucose levels) and it came back exactly as the libre read it. So my question is , can you just use the human meter since strips are more readily available ?

we are. cheapest no-Rx glucometer and strips and lancets were about $26 at the drug store. I just hope my lancets aren't too small... Another vet video used a little lancet, so we'll see. Im psyching myself up to check today for the first time.

We're feeding raw food to our diabetic husky... but had to lower insulin waaaay down (which is a good thing). We use bold by nature raw food mixed with a little frozen blueberry, teaspoon of pumpkin, 1/4 cup quinoa, 1 egg, handfull of spinach or kale. Probably never would have developed diabetes if we were giving this food from day 1.... store bought kibble is 90% garbage and even the exspensive diabetic kibble ingredients had corn and other crap in it .

@@macleanclassics Thank you for replying, its as if her taste spuds have completely changed now, since writing the above her insulin jabs have increased to two a day with the level of insulin changing from 10 to 12 then down to 9 for each jab, the positive thing is she now shows interest in food again now but seems to eat something once only then refuses to eat the same thing again, basically, shes a git 😉at the moment we are waiting until Tuesday when we give another load of glucose/ketone results to the vet to find out if the insulin amount changes again or stays the same, anyway, again thank you for your help 👍

@@FurryDad4115 yeah, my pup was a finicky eater until we switched to raw , now he practically stands head first at my leg waiting while I prep his food. I couldn't even imagine trying to control diabetes in a dog who won't eat..... I jab my guy as he's eating so I know for sure the food goes in .... if he refused to eat, I'd skip that jab. To low blood sugar is way more dangerous than high.

@@macleanclassics The scary part is it takes seven days to gather all the sample results you need before the vet can reassess what level of insulin is correct for your dog which leaves you watching the weight come of her in the mean time, that means to get to this still unsure stage weve had to watch weight fall of her for a month or so trying all sorts of enticements, in the end we really have had no choice other than to just get the food to the back of her throat and wait until she swallows, not perfect by any means but its that or wait untill the vet gets it right or shes on a drip, she now shows interest in food but if she chooses to eat of her own accord its very little at random times which without our intervention just would not work either with her diabetes nore with her health in general, she a Rhodesian Ridgeback so luckily had the body to be able to lose weight from but so far shes lost 7kilos which for any dog is more than significant hence why we have had to intervene the way we have, just hope on Wednesday we get told they've got it right and shes put something back on, in the meantime it deflates you as an owner but you just got to go with it, sorry for the ramble, guess I needed it more than I realized, thanks again for replying.

@@FurryDad4115 no worries, sometimes us diabetic pup parents just need to know we aren't alone.... best of luck. Try grabbing a small pack of raw food from the fridge of your local pet food supplier..get pure meat with bone and organs, not the" dinners" (lots of companies doing it by mail as well) see if she'll eat it... its cheaper than the big name diabetic kibble. Just don't switch outright if she will, because you'll need less insulin.

There are two different possible units. I guess the 137 is in mg/dl and 28 was in mmol/l

I have the same trouble. I have to squeeze over and over trying to force blood out of the pierce spot. But most times cannot get a big enough drop for the meter to test!! VERY FRUSTRATING!

In my limited reading it seems the vast majority of canine diabetes in more like type 1 Diabetes, so not really. Some oral agents can be helpful for some cats according to an article I came across.
