I randomly picked a nylon-string guitar off the rack at a 2nd-hand consignment shop sight unseen. I just picked it up, played it, and was blown away by how rich and mellow the sound was. It was a cheap, Japanese-made guitar from the late 60's, and I still have it today. I really lucked out finding such a quality guitar for such a bargain-basement price. And it stays in tune rather well too.

Different strings/ tension can alter the sound of a flamenco/classical. Not all brands are equal in price or quality. Some are better sounding than others so experiment and find your favorite brand for the type of music and songs you play.
@MrElcharro537 жыл бұрын
Oh absolutely yes, I have different sets on all my guitar haha. Right now I like either Aguila Granato or Augustine Regals. Secondary brands Luthier, Savarez, or Hannabach. I often buy the singles and mix those three brands with my guitars. I thought about cataloging the mix that I like but then I realized that would only be good for my guitars so kind of pointless. But the most consistent whole sets I'll use if I don't have time is Aguila or Augustine.

10:25 Seems to me that the sharper the angle, the more the strings would touch the wood. Hard to tell from the video, but maybe it's the way you string it? Like if the string goes around the roller on the bottom rather than over it, that would place the string closer to the wood. Or if it is wound away from the center rather than towards it, that should help, too. Have you tried those?
@NourMohamed-xe8zw4 жыл бұрын
What do you think about classical guitars with cutaways? How would it affect the tone and sustain of the instrument?
@mizansomani18154 жыл бұрын
On the neck angle, nearly all classical and flamenco guitars are made with a neck angled forward at the nut anywhere from 1.5mm to 3mm, so there should be a very slight forward angle of the neck. The fretboard is often tapered as well to account for any discrepancy in the angle of the neck after assembly. At the end of the day it's the action at the 12th fret and the string height above the soundboard that will tell you if a neck has moved, as well as how much of the saddle is left to lower the action. Your refinishing comment I find very curious, because one of the great things about french polish is that it can so easily be repaired, as new shellac just blends in with old. Removing scratches and touching up polish is a pretty standard service, especially if it's the original luthier doing the work. If you mean the type of refinishing that involves stripping the finish back to bare wood then I totally agree, that's terrible. A common bit of maintenance on concert guitars is a few more sessions of french polish from a good luthier, especially if the guitar is owned by a player who sweats a lot. Could you explain what you meant when you said the strings touching the head cause difficulty when playing barres? In my experience that type of difficulty with a barre high on the neck would be caused by the setup being wrong, possibly at the nut. If you take guitar with a V-jointed head it's very likely the angle will be less than 10°. For instance Hauser heads are around 9° and Romanillos around 7°. This has to do with the thickness of the blank they make the neck from, how much of that thickness is used by the angle of the V-joint, and the variation of the joint itself. For standard scarf jointed heads the angle is usually anywhere from 10° to 20°. For a guitar with flamenco style pegs a larger angle is required for the strings to meet the nut at the correct breaking point, for machines I'd say Romanillos is at about the minimum. If you think about it, a guitar with a very steep head angle would put more string force on the nut, so this may affect barres a bit. Nonetheless I agree about not having strings touching the head, If anything it indicates a lack of thought on the luthier's part. I really like this video, I think there aren't enough out there that do as good a job of getting into the little details that make all the difference.
@rfdsrd2 жыл бұрын
The principle reason why a 1st fret barred chord (F) can be difficult is not a condition of the headstock angle, or whether the strings past the nut are inadvertently touching wood, it's due to an improper nut relief, which means that the string slots in the nut are not cut deep enough. Put a capo on between the 2nd and 3rd frets, observe the space between the bottom of each string with the top of the 1st fret - this space should be extremely small if nearly non-existent. Use proper nut files to correct the nut relief.

Good video Jason, but I think your jumping a bit far ahead for someone who wants to choose their first classical guitar, I agree with what you said about angle of strings at bridge and headstock ,I think its very important to ensure that it has a solid front, the nut and bridge are bone not plastic, also the gears at the machine heads are made from good quality metal that isn't too soft, When you look into the sound hole check the kerfing strips where they meet the bracing as if this is done right and the cuts are clean its a good indicator of the overall attention that was paid during construction .I bought my nephew his first classical guitar last year and it was a couple of hundred euros and a make I had never heard of it was a Salvador Cortez ...I was dubious about the brand but it was way ahead of more expensive brands and will serve him until he decides if he wants to invest in something more expensive at a later date.The best advise to someone looking for their first classical guitar is to find something that feels nice has decent level of construction and don't overspend... and most of all enjoy!!!!

Hi Jason! You have a very informative video, and very talented! I'm thinking of buying a 2011 Murat Sezan, by the Turkish luthier of the same name who is no longer with us. I know very little about guitar structure etc. It is described as having lattice bracing. I can't play it first as it would be shipped to me. It has Brazilian rosewood back and sides lined on the inside with spruce. The back and side are quite heavy and this is to increase projection in a hall. The top is spruce and the scale is 650 (not sure what that means) with a 52 mm nut. Finish is French polish with a 12 hole tie block. A music school student from Turkey owned it and traded it with the seller, but maybe so because it is not all that great being a lattice guitar. There's no blemishes... The guitar store seller says it has superior volume and tone, which to me that would be nice. I play folk music but others have told me the way I play reminds them of classical guitar Is that worth $895 US dollars?

Yes, Thames is where I would go otherwise. I love Candelas guitars I've spent and will continue to spend ridiculous amounts of money for my next few guitars at the Candelas shop but if I didn't have Candelas, Michael Thames would be where I'd be buying guitars in the USA. I've played his guitars out of Santa Fe, NM and they are great. Back in the day like 2006 I walked into the old Chicago music store in Tucson saw a used Michael Thames spruce and Indian rosewood and a fairly new Candelas Mex rosewood and cedar guitar for sale both at the same shop same time. The Thames was 1,000 the candelas was 2,700. It haunts me to this day knowing what I missed out on there because I was in college dead broke and couldn't afford either one let alone both lol the things we take for granted in life no. Good luck and I hope you find your dream guitar.

But what if the little white plugs those strings wrap around is a little fatter, fat enough to elevate those strings from the wood? No more string touching that wood, no more dead tone, it's kind of like insulating a power line so that the electrical current (in this case noise vibration) can travel uninterrupted. The angle of the head may therefore not need changing. I'm looking at getting a 90's Ramirez 3-E cedar top, such a sweet soft sound.

I understand The Hermanos Conde make a good classical guitar...Is there a store in California ? Any advice ?
@MrElcharro534 жыл бұрын
Well Conde guitars are pretty badass. I've been considering getting a used one for many years. I know that in LA you have guys like Dan Zeff Guitars who sometimes sell conde guitars used. Guitar Salon International will sell new and used conde guitars. Most of the time with GSI you're paying a premium price for those because GSI is a broker not an individual seller so they have to add some cost on top of that price to stay profitable. It really is tricky because not all Conde guitars are created equal and they come from now three different generations of builders and two different shops. Now if you buy a new Conde guitar you're either buying one from Maurianos or Felipes kids who make guitars in Spain. If you buy an older one from the 90s to today it's the sons, and if you buy one from the 80s all the way back its the original Conde brothers who were the nephews of Domingo Esteso. each generation has different models different finishing methods. The quality is always very high but it can be the difference of spending 1000 or less up to 12,000 or more for a Conde guitar.

hi there ive been looking at getting a classical guitar recently but im not too sure what are my best options for my price point. i was at a local guitar store recently and played some classical guitars. one that stood out was the la patrie collection. the intonation was good and i found the tone to be really nice. it felt like it was gentle and not "trying" to be loud like the others i played. im looking for something that is more gentle and soft. i was wondering if i should be looking at any other guitars around the same price point as the collection. 500 cad would be best but a little over is fine too. the collection i was looking at was 650 if i remember correctly.

Example for clarity, 12th fret 2nd string 9th fret 4th string played simultaneously where not in tune. I began to think that maybe this was a characteristic of the classical guitar. You are saying I could find a classical that has good intonation? This was a very reputable place. A student of mine purchased a classical and spent thousands of dollars and it doesn't have very good intonation. Am I being to picky?

Thanks for great video , about Lacquer contra French Polish - We have been retailer for Ramirez guitars and they always say Lacquer is better than French Polishing even on the top models like 1A. Whats your opinion.
@MrElcharro535 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the comment glad you like the video. Man this is like the great debate no. My opinion.. sound wise if done right, French polish is the way to go. Now when they say Lacquer is better I think ok maybe what they mean is it's a better protector to the guitar a better finish meaning is lasts longer and does a better job at protecting the wood. Ok if that's their logic then yes I could agree. Honestly... I'm going to be crucified for this but I'm not a fan or Ramirez guitars. If I had 8 grand to spend on a guitar brand new concert level I would not spend my money there. I would gladly spend a year or more hunting down and old Daniel Friedrich guitar or and old Manuel Rodriguez Sr from his old shop in LA. Guitars like that when you find them in the wild are so good. Or I'd just go to LA and buy another Candelas lol

I got like $300 to spare, any suggestions anybody?

Great information and a very different perspective when discussing classical guitars. I didn't know the angle of the strings (going downward) at the saddle/bridge had such an impact, I thought the strings should be on a straight line. You explained well about the Do's and Dont's of a Luthier, using ultra-violet light and other things. Question, what musical pieces did you play? I want to look that music up. You play well. Thanks for sharing your view. You should be a music teacher. Great help. Thanks again.

@amullarney5 жыл бұрын
Enjoyed your video but with regard to neck break angle (at the nut) I think you are entirely wrong. If the string was anchored at that point ( as some modern instruments are) and you tension the string as needed the string will play the required note just fine... the string angle is only needed to stop string vibration in the nut on there way to tuning machines. Now what you say about break angle at the bridge makes a lot more sense...

There are a lot of made in Japan classical guitars out there that are very good quality and you can pick them up for $150. Ive had one for 40 years and its very good. Try to get one built in the 1970s or early 1980s as they seem to be the best years.

Neck angle is Critical and if incorrect there will be no non-invasive way to adjust what is first and foremost most important about any guitar (and other stringed instruments as well) = Playability. If the guitar sounds like a choir of angels but is a devil to play, that guitar is of no use to me. Always check the neck angle first by using a 24" straight edge (1/8" x 1-1/2" x 24" aluminum strip from a big box store), laid between the D and G strings, then observe where the edge's corner meets the top edge of the bridge (not the saddle). If the edge's corner MEETS the bridge's top edge, that is usually fine. If the edge's corner is slightly ABOVE the bridge's top edge, that is good and will allow dropping the saddle for a lower string action. If the edge's corner is slightly BELOW the bridge's top edge, that is not good and there will be little to no saddle adjustment for string action. I take a straight edge with me when acoustic shopping. :)
@MrElcharro532 жыл бұрын
Yea the playability is now for me after these few years the most important thing, the guitar needs to tune and it needs to feel comfortable when playing either during practice, a gig, a concert. Esp after the pandemic being home all the time just playing one guitar and no gigs or shows gave me a new perspective if it were just you and the guitar alone would you still love it and would it be enjoyable to play just for the sake of playing or would it just sit in it's case? I guess it's true life is constant learning now matter what we think we already knew.

Does it really matter if the strings touch the headstock, given they’ve already passed over the nut? Not sure how that would negatively impact the sound, is all.
@MrElcharro535 жыл бұрын
Yea it really is a nit pick type of thing, but considering how much some guitars go for, not just asking price but how much people have actually paid for these things, it is a flaw in the build. now a $100 Yamaha from guitar center I mean frankly who cares right. However a $1,000 anything guitar new or used.. I start to really care about those details. even worse if I go to a builders shop and he wants me to pay $5,000 or more for a classical and it has that little flaw, I don't want it. Is it as important as the frets being correctly calibrated maybe not, but in the music world let's be honest people want perfection, if the audience demands perfectly executed concerts then we need perfectly built instruments. It's a two way street and that builds a high level of trust and respect between the builder and musician. As far as sound, those harmonics that we feed off of it's much more likely that a guitar without that flaw will have a better response and sustain than one that has that flaw.

Hey awesome video! One question I have a solid top guitar and looking at the specs of it I noticed it has a polyurethane finish would the guitar still age in time?
@MrElcharro536 жыл бұрын
Thanks glad you like the video, for a poly finish.. I don't think so, I mean i think when we talk about aging a guitar I think we think of the finish changing over time with the guitar. For the finish to "age" it has to oxidize with the water in the air over time. When you have a french polish guitar it has a bit of metal minerals in it. so the finish will oxidize over time and it usually positively changes the tone of the guitar. What I understand about poly is that it's one of the most durable finishes you can give a pice of wood very long lasting. The reason why poly is long lasting for wood used in furniture is because it's basically water proof. And water proof finish will not age or oxidize over time with the wood of the guitar. I bought a really nice Cordoba guitar back in 2006 when I was in college sounded good got me through a lot of gigs. I sold it back in 2016, damn I'm old now, and it never changed. Maybe ten years is not enough time. But I have a 2016 french polish guitar and after less than 2 years I can hear very subtle differences more tone more volume.

I have a Francisco Navarro "Reyes" Grand Concert flamenco guitar that I love. Now I am getting a "Bouchet" copy classical made by Navarro. I started as a classical guitarist ( my uncle was the great classical guitarist Alexandre Lagoya with whom I studied in 1975 in France) but after a few years I decided to concentrate on flamenco which is what I did for over forty years. I have always been a fan of Jose Feliciano and know that he played Candelas guitars early on when he recorded Light My Fire etc. I love the sound he got back then. I would love to find a guitar with that sound. My Navarro comes close to that sound but not quite. Btw which kind of strings do you use? Cheers, Tony
@MrElcharro536 жыл бұрын
Yes man Navarro's work is really good. When I'm out guitar hunting I'm always looking for either his or his sons guitars. I've played one of his Reyes guitars in a shop in Cali. It was really flamenco I liked it. Candelas guitars really is one of those diamonds in the rough, those instruments just blast sound out at you. They can complete with guitars on the level of de la Chica, or Rodriguez, or even Fritz Ober or Daniel Friederich without having to spend such a high price. I find used stuff like this often but even used good condition some of these guitars are commanding a high price tag when they surface. I use mixed sets of Savarez, Lutheir, Conde and Hanabach strings. Usually high tension. recently I used Aquila an Italian maker really nice volume but don't last more than a month before they begin to lose it.

My Sanchis 33 has been my main gig guitar and is a great guitar for a factory guitar, my old Conde and Barba are the most flamenco but what I like about my Navarro ( which I bought second hand on EBay for $2,000) is that you can play anything on it. @m4300zx7 жыл бұрын
Or a mariachi guitar and a guitarra de golpe? Thanks man
@MrElcharro537 жыл бұрын
Hey what's bro, there are a few differences for the golpe the tuning is different than a guitar. A guitar is tuned in A and gos in 5ths. The golpe is tuned in G and gos in 5ths. Also the golpe has 5 strings from G to D. So the chords you play on a golpe are way different than on a guitar. The mariachi guitar is interesting, it's tuned as a regular classical guitar, however the neck is calibrated differently to make manicos easier to play all the strings on the right hand and chord transitions faster for the left hand since the distance between strings are shorter than on a standard full concert guitar.

Can a luthier fix the interference of the string with the headstock?
@MrElcharro536 жыл бұрын
Pablo Rodeiro well one trick I've seen work was to replace the fretboard with a thicker piece of wood like ebony. The raises the action a bit so they have to shape a new saddle and nut to go with it. That's a risky and expensive fix tho, so I wouldn't recommend that without some serious thought.
@leonardlong79915 жыл бұрын
Please talk about raised (or height of) fretboards.
@lynnv85015 жыл бұрын
you mean the action? that's a must topic for me and any guitar being that I have small hands. I can't play a guitar unless the action is good, meaning, the lowest height possible over the frets.
@leonardlong79915 жыл бұрын
The "action" is, I think, the height of the strings over the fret board. By 'height of the fretboard I mean how high the fretboard is itself at the higher notes. For instance, the Cordobos are not as high as the De Casios, It makes a difference when playing higher notes. @@lynnv8501

I bought a Cordoba C9 but the high and low strings touch the headstock. Should i return it or bring it a shop for repair? How would they repair it?
@MrElcharro536 жыл бұрын
MarzBarzz no there really isn't a repair for that, it's a flaw in the build process. The angle where the headstock and the neck are joined. The classical I'm holding in the beginning of this video has that issue slightly, one thing that was done to my guitar was a new fret board it did help. BUT for a C9 Cordoba I don't recommend investing anymore money into a guitar like that. I say live with it those are not bad guitars for the price, but I dont personally buy guitars like that. Even an old used vintage guitar that was actually hand made with few flaws is way more desirable for the money. If Cordoba wants to copy old master builders from Spain and call their guitars "concert" then they should tune at all frets and not have these flaws

Jason Davenport the imperfection really bothers me
@MrElcharro536 жыл бұрын
Yea I get you man, Well I want to do a video about pricing a classical guitar which is a touchy subject I've found. but for my perspective. A cordoba C9 is about 550 to 700 price range depending where or who you buy it from right. now when we talk about "perfection" which is not an unreasonable expectation when you're paying a lot of money. Now whats a lot of money? To folks like my parents 700 for a guitar their kid is playing is a crap ton of money let's be fair. The guitar I have at the end of this video that I describe as near perfect measurements, costs between 2500 and 5000 depending on all the bells and whistles you want on the guitar, the wood, the clamshell inlay the binding the finish. That's a lot to deal with. My guitar is certainly not "out of the box" ready to go. Cordobas pitch is concert quality out of the box. Well not really right, sounds pretty good and to an untrained ear one guitar sounds the same as the next but you find imperfections in their builds. The reality is the difference in pure sound and playability and getting all of those variables perfect in the build is very personal to the builder and the saying goes you get what you pay for. Now If I am expected to pay a builder 5000 for a guitar....I expect absolute 100% perfection and I don't think that's unreasonable but at the same time I'm going to shell out that dough for it and that's not unreasonable either. Now if I'm buying something in a store or online for 700...well if its not perfect what can i expect right. I need to make a video about this topic when I have the time.

Jason Davenport makes sense. Im looking forward to a pricing video on guitars . I really like the sound of my c9 since it is the first classical guitar i own. I mainly played with an acoustic back then and figured id give classical a try since ive been studying classical pieces. Still a noob at knowing what im getting when i pay 700-800 for a guitar but thanks for the advice

what should the angle of the headstock be
@MrElcharro535 жыл бұрын
At least enough of an angle so that the strings are not touching the wood of the headstock. Exact specs should be a test of the guitar builder. That's why I buy what I buy and work with builders I trust, it's their part to make those determinations and I have to respect and trust them. However if I get a guitar and there's no harmonics to be heard on those strings because they're touching the headstock then something failed here during that build.

Why so many choppy jump cuts in the video?
@MrElcharro536 жыл бұрын
I do that because I don't think people enjoy listening to my heavy breathing, pauses and bs words like in between thoughts like: "like" or "umm" or "well". I wish I could speak perfectly but it just never happens that way. That's why I edit, plus sometimes in the edit I say stuff that doesn't make sense the way I said it so it get's thrown out.

You should mention the frets also, they can be shaved to the point that will affect the tone of your guitar. The height of the frets should be 1.6 mm.

Ivan Guban awesome point yea I forgot that, my default mode is often to refret or recrown an old guitar when I buy one

Hi Jason. I just bought a classical guitar and when I got it from the shop, it has perfect intonation, but suddenly it has gotten out of that intonation. Do you think it's because of the string? I changed the string tension many times, when playing it I put in on tune, then after playing I lower the strings' tension.
@MrElcharro537 жыл бұрын
juan dela cruz that's very odd, so every 4 frets on the guitar is one position. usually the first 4 frets are always in tune on most guitars then as u go up towards the sound hole the frets arnt always placed correctly. If you checked all those frets with new strings then yea it could be the strings. another thing is classical guitars always need to be tuned before u play it will never stay in tune after u first tune it like an electric guitar does
@juandelacruz52477 жыл бұрын
Jason Davenport it's now back in its perfect intonation. I think the strings just needed to get stretched a little. I'm now leaving it in tune, rather than lowering its tune after playing it to relieve tension on the neck. Hopefully, the neck won't bend soon because of this. Thanks for the sharing your thoughts on this.
@MrElcharro537 жыл бұрын
Yea try to leave the tension on the guitar it's healthier for the guitar

Hi Jason! Really nice video, very informative. I'm thinking of buying a classical guitar. I'm a beginner in classical guitar, but do play acoustic steel. I'm thinking which is better between YamahaI C40 and Cordoba CP 100. They somehow vary in overall neck size but both described as "full size". The C40 has gloss finish with all laminate wood and without a truss rod. The Cordoba has I think solid top with truss rod and has satin finish. They are the ones that are within my budget. I prefer the Cordoba but many reviews show that Yamaha C40 is really good. What do you think? Thanks!
@MrElcharro537 жыл бұрын
juan dela cruz hello Juan, thats a tough decision you have there. I would say it really depends on what genre you're playing. The yamaha has more projection, it's louder in an open space. The cordoba has a clearer tone but is not as loud when playing chords. At least thats how they feel to me. The one distinction I've noticed with the newer cheaper Yamaha is that the trebles often sound more like plastic when playing single notes. So even though its projecting a lot of sound it feels like playing a shoe box with strings. I see why most people flock to cordoba even tho I'm not a huge fan of theirs. Older Yamaha sound very good and I activley look for those because they're only a few 200 or 300 used, but if you don't have time or resource the cordoba will at least give you enough clear tone to keep you motivated to continue playing. Hope I helped, if you come across an old yamaha Nippon Gakki for less than 150 out there I'd buy that haha. They one I have was about 275.

Hello Jason, How are you? I'm back. hahaha.. I did not pursue buying the Codoba since I realized that what I need is a classical with a cut away. I want to have easy access to the high notes as I will play Jazz on it. They have classical guitars with cut way but quite more expensive, like 3 times more expensive. I've been looking for one that has a truss rod from different brands, but it's really hard to find one with a truss rod. Now, I'm considering to buy one even though it has no truss rod. Is truss rod in classical guitars really that important?
@MrElcharro537 жыл бұрын
juan dela cruz hey what's up Juan, well as far as a trust rod on a classical guitar if the guitar is well made by someone who has a proven track record for quality then no I'll say it here in my opinion it's not absolutely necessary. Now if you buy a guitar that is cheaply made then yes need the trust rod because the neck at the pivot point where it connects to the body of the guitar will move in the direction where the strings are pulling towards the bridge. Most awesome cut away that I've played are custom and you know that means mas $$$ haha. Try finding a cut away guitar made in Mexico, not easy to find but they are out there. And most of the time it's not as expensive.
Neck creep?! Maybe on a poorly built classical guitar, I have several classical guitars that do not have metal rods in the necks that are over 40 years old with no neck creep.
@MrElcharro537 жыл бұрын
Bob St. Cyr that's awesome, what luthier are they made from?
@JackChessa7 жыл бұрын
I have several old classical guitars with no neck creep and no truss rod (Ramirez and Del pilar and takamine) I have seen guitars that may need the neck reset, but this is not warp in the neck rather due to the neck pivoting at the point where the neck heel meets the back of the guitar.
