1. Budget - The price of the guitar is usually correlative to quality, however, you can get well-built, cheap guitars from the Yamaha and Cordoba brands. | 2:18 2. Size Matters - Choose the right size guitar for your body. | 3:39 3. Fret Sprout - Run your fingers up and down the edges of neck of the guitar to check for Fret Sprouting. If the frets cut into your finger, the wood of the guitar has shrunk. | 4:24 4. Action - The height of the string after the 12th fret (where the neck meets the guitar) is called the "action". The action on a classical guitar should be 4mm at the 6th string and 3.5mm at the 1st string. You can buy guitars with lower action than that but don't buy guitars with actions that are higher because the guitar will be very difficult to play. | 6:14 4.5. Fret Buzz - Take your time to play some notes on the guitar to determine whether the guitar gives significant fret buzz. A guitar that buzzes needs fret work or has a misshapen neck. | 7:04 5. Nut - If a nut is not well cut, the guitar will feel very unpleasant to play because the height of the strings will be too high at the 1st and 2nd frets. To determine whether the nut is well cut, hold the 6th string directly on the 3rd fret and tap on the 6th string directly on the 1st fret. The distance from the string to the fret should be practically zero, so if the string moves the nut is not well cut. | 7:57 6. Saddle and Break Angle - There should be enough saddle left on top of the bridge for filing. As you play overtime, the guitar will change and the bridge will have to be filed down in order to adjust the guitar properly. To know whether the saddle is correctly cut, press the 12th fret and see if there is any distance between the 13th fret and the string. There should be practically no distance. | 9:48 7. Tuners - The tuners should turn in a uniform way. The should not "jump" or wiggle as you rotate them towards and away from you. | 12:52 8. Avoid Twisted (Warped) Necks - You'll frequently see cheap classical guitars with warped necks. You can determine whether the neck is twisted by looking up the neck of the guitar from the head stock. | 13:46 9. Intonation - Check that the octaves sound equal when played on the guitar. | 15:41 10. Sound - Try multiple guitars at the shop that are within your budget and choose the one that has a sound that you like. | 17:36 Final Tip - Pick a guitar that you are in love with. Following all of these points is pointless if you don't feel attracted to the guitar that you're buying. You want to be excited to play it. | 17:51 Thank you for the comprehensive video! This has significantly helped me to understand what to look for when purchasing a classical guitar!

Another way to check a classical is to play harmonics on the 5th, 7th, 12th and 19th frets. If it can do this and sound good, it should be well made i think. My brother in law says that a guitar should be like a woman, she must call to you. Spend the money. Find a way. Strum slowly the cowboy chords and some minor chords. You will know by the sound. Even if you don't play it often as you would like, when you have visitors, they will play it for you. When a luthier spends a month or more to build a guitar, how much should he receive for his hard work, $500. only? The buyer needs to be realistic. A beautiful hand made guitar will not be inexpensive. One buys cheap shoes to save money, but can't wear them. What good is this?

Another tip i saw somewhere: Gently tap with your fingertips the body of the guitar (while muting strings). Do it on the top side right under the bridge, and then at the opposite spot at the bottom. If the guitar has solid top and bottom, the top sound much lower than the bottom. In expensive guitar the difference is close to an octave. Is this a legitimate tip? Supposedly, it'sbecause the top is responsible for developing lower tones, and the bottom produces higher tones. If both pieces are of high quality a guitar should have a very good range. My cheap guitar is made out of laminat and that's why it fails this test.
@CesarAllGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I know what I am going to say here is going to open a can of worms... But I come from the School of Antonio Torres Jurado ( 1897-1892) ... and what I can tell you is that you should not worry too much about sides and back. Antonio built a guitar made of cardboard sides and back with a solid wood top which is today exhibited at the Museum of Music in Barcelona, in order to demonstrate that the top is the only responsible of the projection in classical guitars. In my honest opinion, sides and back made of solid wood versus laminated does not make a lot of difference, but the top does. This gives enough content for another video :-)

Cesar what a great video and it answers all my questions. I just received an Alhambra 8 P from guitar center online. It looks and sounds great BUT it was made in February 2021 and it has FRET SPROUTS and HIGH ACTION at 4.5 mm on both sides. This is with the lower bridge it came with. Seems based on your input I should return it. I assume these guitars need to be stored in a temperature and humidity controlled environment. Not sure GC does that and especially since it’s 3 years old.

Nahum Nehemiah - I totally agree that a good set up by a competent luthier is well worth the cost. I like my action low on my guitar. My husband prefers his a tiny bit higher. Once within a range, it can be a personal thing. BTW, the word advice is an uncountable noun in English. Don’t say advices. Only say advice. (Just a tip. Sorry, I’m an English teacher. This is a very common error.)

@CesarAllGuitar2 жыл бұрын
Gracias Oscar!
