I haven’t played the flute since elementary school, and I never played any other instrument ever. But I still really want the bass flute knowing it’s more difficult. Am I making mistake for learning on the bass?
@HighSpiritsFlutes4all4 жыл бұрын
Hi there! The bass flutes are indeed harder to play as they are longer and wider. The bass flute holes are larger and the instrument requires more air and breath control to play. We always recommend our Sparrow Hawk and First Hawk flutes for beginners. If you are looking for deeper sounding flutes, our Golden Eagle in F# or Red Tail Hawk in G are also great beginner flutes since they are mid-tones :)

I have a concern about choosing a key. I'm a musician but completely new to these flutes. For professional players, do they know how to play instrument on all keys?? Is that something they just know how to do? Because each flute would obviously have a different fingering to play the notes. Also, I congratulate this site for how well it's laid out and the information provided in these videos. So many instruments sites could take a leaf out of your book! :)
@HighSpiritsFlutes4all7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, Thanks for your interest in High Spirits Flutes! I suppose professional players are more at ease playing on all keys...just from experience. Each key is different only in that the size of the flute grows with the deeper the tone. As Odell explains in the video, the keys of "A", "Bb"' and "C" will be easier in that they are shorter flutes with holes that are closer together. The fingering of the notes will remain the same on all of our flutes, regardless of key. Thank you for your kind words regarding our website! It's always nice to get positive feedback. We hope you continue to explore the world of flutes!

Where can I find a flute in the key of Em? Do Native American flutes come in that key? When you say G, do you mean G major or minor? I suppose a G major would work, yes? Also, can multiple keys be played on one flute? Thanks! Great video!
@HighSpiritsFlutes4all4 жыл бұрын
You ask some great questions. Below is the link to all our High Spirits Flutes in the key of E. highspirits.com/collections/all-flutes/flutes-in-the-key-of-e All High Spirits flutes are tuned to a minor pentatonic scale = Am, Bm, Cm,....and so on. While the NAF is considered to be a 1 octave instrument, some flutes can play a full diatonic scale in the relative major. Ex: Sparrow Hawks, which are in the key of A, can also play the diatonic scale in the relative major of C. The major diatonic scales require different fingering. All full-size High Spirits flutes come with a booklet. In the back of the booklet is a listing of the minor pentatonic and chromatic scales by key with the fingering for both 5 and 6 hole flutes. I don’t know if it is just from experience but just to give you an example I really cannot tell the difference between the key of A and Key of G. What exactly do I need to pay attention to, to notice the difference. Thanks in advance
@HighSpiritsFlutes4all3 жыл бұрын
Great question! Being able to identify a key by ear alone is something that doesn't always come easily. Much of it really comes from spending a lot of time playing and listening to music, and sitting with each note so that you can get a feel for how one sounds compared to another. It's one of the many benefits of Native American Style Flutes: each one is in a specific key, so you can spend time exploring the possible note combinations and really familiarize yourself with each one. My recommendation would be to check out the sample videos for each of our flutes at highspirits.com/pages/flute-sound-samples, where you can compare them side by side and get a better feel for the differences. Happy playing!

Thank you for your videos. I have been learning the alto recorder, I do like the sound of the G cedar flute, but my hands are on the small size, would the holes be too much of a stretch for me. Judy

Hi Songsparrow - generally the key of 'G' is a flute that fits many sized hands, even those that are on the small size so we would encourage you to give it a try. If for some reason you find it isn't a good size fit for you, just let us know and we'll work with you to find a different flute that will be a good fit. Also, here is a link to our smaller flutes which might be enjoyable for you to browse: highspirits.com/collections/all-flutes/high-tone -- If you have any additional questions, please feel free to call us or email us directly so we can reply more quickly: flutes@highspirits.com / (800) 394-1523 -Best! do you have a flute in the key of G but for a small handed beginner?
@HighSpiritsFlutes4all8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Lauren. These are all the flutes we recommend for first time players highspirits.com/pages/great-flutes-for-first-time-players The only one in the Key of G is the Red Tail Hawk but that is for larger hands. You may want to consider the Pocket G. Keep in mind, though, that it produces a higher pitch sound. highspirits.com/search?type=product&q=pocket+flute

Bought a five finger flute from you in San Francisco at a Xmas fair about twenty years any idea what key it could be
@HighSpiritsFlutes4all4 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, if you have a 5-hole flute from High Spirits, it is most likely in the key of A. However, a sure-fire way to tell is that we always engrave the key that the flute is in on the back of the instrument! You can also email us pictures at flutes@highspirits.com and we can help you identify the flute from there. Thanks!

Do you sell five hole flutes
@HighSpiritsFlutes4all4 жыл бұрын
Hey Daniel - our 6-hole flutes are modified to be 5-hole flutes with a leather hole cover over the third-hole. That way, the flute can be played as a 5-hole or 6-hole flute! We do not make any 5-hole flutes. Thanks!

is the sparrowhawk a bass flute?
@HighSpiritsFlutes4all7 жыл бұрын
Hi, the Sparrow Hawk is considered a mid-tone flute, our bass-tone flutes are quite a bit bigger. Here is a link to our mid-tone flutes - highspirits.com/collections/mid-tone and one to our bass-tone flutes - highspirits.com/collections/bass-tone That way you can compare the differences.

what separates the less $100 flutes from $250-$300?
@HighSpiritsFlutes4all7 жыл бұрын
Good question! It is mostly the size of the flute, smaller flutes take less time and materials to make than larger flutes. Some other factors would be the type of wood the flute is made from and the extent of design work on the flute. Our Signature Series flutes also have a number of innovations that make them take more time to make which increases their cost.
