These videos are such a blessing! So many of today's books are very simplistic in illustration and language, and there seems to be a trend for books on "pooping", "farting" etc. How terribly sad when there are many quality stories around, such as described in your top ten video.

Thank you! I love these videos. I would like advice on what to do when all your child wants from the library or wants to hear read is ultra consumer Disney princess books. I don't know what to do. My house is filled with excellent picture books, but all she wants is books about tv characters. She doesn't even watch TV.

One idea would be to treat those books as you would junk food or sweets. A little every once in a while is okay, but you don’t want a steady diet of them. Even if that’s all she wants, in this case, she doesn’t necessarily want what is best, so you’ll need to step in and help her make a better choice. Perhaps you could allow her to check out one of those books (and not the one with 20 stories in it!) from the library and the rest must be good, wholesome books. Whenever you’re reading together, you might put the character book on the bottom of the stack to be read only after the others and if there is time. In other words, continue to give her a steady diet of the good stuff and reserve the other for once in a while. Remember, the books she hears often will cultivate her tastes for what is good.

What do you do if your child is attached to a book that matches none of these? I dread reading it. Is it justifiable to get rid of the book? Do I keep it and wait until the attachment fades, meanwhile introducing better books? Thank you 🙏🏼 I appreciate all your content

Hi, This is an excellent question! It is ultimately your decision, you can approach this situation in many ways! We want to respect our children as people and it may be helpful to ask your child and yourself what it is about this book that you do/do not like? Is it introducing poor ideas? Is it the writing style that you don't care for? If it comes down to more of a preference, you can respect your child's preference and keep it while continuing to expose them to other living books that contain good ideas. You can set some guidelines too that you will read that book to them while keeping other books in the rotation as well. If you decide that it is a book that glorifies ideas that you do not want your child to have reinforced then perhaps this would be a case for editing it out of your home library.
