Great review. Personally I've had the Moab 3 (Low) for over 6 months and LOVE them and pretty much wear them 4-5 days a week on and off trail. Comfortable from day 1, no sore spots at all after 6-8 hours of hiking through hilly and rugged terrain. I did recently try (and returned) the Mid version to potentially replace my aging Columbia mids hikers as I do like that added ankle support when carrying a bigger pack. But even at home on carpet and tiles, testing them with various types of socks, I just couldn't get them to work for me. (And I bought home two different sizes....just in case.) The key difference was the sole - the lows don't have the same "heel step" (gap) that the mids feature - which created a sore spot around the ball of my foot. It's a shame as I love their look and features and the proven durability of my other 3 Merrells.

Thanks! I just received a new pair of lows yesterday and the sole has changed. I wonder if it now matches the mids. I haven't worn them yet so I am hoping they are just as good as they used to be. Nothing stays the same!

Just purchased the MOAB 3 mid. I would love the freedom and coolness In warmer weather to wear the low style but, my ankles tend to give out so I got the mid. They feel a bit clunky but I need that extra support.

I use military boots when walking on rough, uneven ground. I wear light hill walking boots/hiking boots on roads and pavements (UK). I don't lace them above my ankle, but the "mid" keep my ankles warmer in the winter months. The "approach shoes"/ low, I'll wear in the summer.

I was having this argument internally the past 48 hours. Until I saw a YT video of a hiker who nearly broke his leg when the loop of his lace got hooked on that top speed hook on the other foot while walking. So, low it is, for me. I'm trying to find a MOAB2 Vented low but they're hard to come by. There seems to be a build quality problem with MOAB3s, from what I've watched and read. Especially the toe piece coming unglued. THANKS for this video!!

@@krazmokramer yes I loved my Moab2 but hate the 3. I’ve switched to Nortiv8 hiking shoes from Amazon and really like them. I did a review on them if you want to check it out.

I have the Moab 2 waterproof version and it's waterproofing is excellent. The base model isn't waterproof. They also make a Gore-Tex version. I'm not sure if it's significantly better than the regular waterproof version. I wear them in all weather with a lightweight or heavier merino wool sock and they're warm in winter and comfy in summer in the woods, but not sure how they'd work on more open very hot trails. That's why I was checking out the vented version for summer. I prefer the ankle support and was wondering if the vented ankle is much warmer?

Planning to trek in the Himalayas. Mix of plain, rocky, pebbles, river/mud, forest, snow. Do you think I need the ankle support?

Wow, what an awesome trip. If it were me, I’d want the ankle support but I know weight will be a factor. I’d ask an outfitter or guide who has been there before.

Advice certainly welcome, all the other needless chat not so welcome. For future reference, just say hi and then get straight to the point. No need for all the long winded preamble.
