Some pedals are designed to work more flexibly pre ,or post gain; Howard's Catalin designs, - the Topanga and Talisman, for example, - hold up well, and can be dialed into either.I found the Oceans 11 particularly unsuitable to pre driven sounds, even for the "Shoegaze/ Post Rock," applications where it is standard practice; this is commonly the case with less expensive digital circuits.They rapidly turn into shapeless mush. Walrus also offer some verbs and delays that work well, either way; but those classic, original, Catalinbread designs had a lot of thought and experience put into them, outside of what were just standard, accepted, approaches.

JC-120 was, is and shall always be the best “pedal platform amp”. Not to mention it’s loud as all hell and built like a tank. There is a reason that many the classic postpunk, dreampop and shoegaze bands (all pedal heavy genres) used it heavily. Look on stage at a Slowdive concert and take note of the JC-120s on display.

@Halli Day Yes. Back then, we used Fender Offset guitars and amps like the JC series simply because they were around and didn't cost more than your Dad's annual income. Nobody could afford a Fender Strat, but the used Jags and JMs were pretty cheap, and every pawn shop had a few JC-40s, 120s, maybe a Marshall *something* if you were lucky. Vox was probably the most attainable valve amp option, but that was more early-mid 90s. The red knob Fenders (I had a solid state one, served me very well) were also readily available if not quite as affordable as the Rolands, especially the valve red-knobs. Brings back memories of me and my friends' rigs. We didn't really know what we were doing at first, but we made the best of it and now we can teach all the young 'uns about the magic of a Jag into a JC-120/AC15 wet/dry rig :) I think Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead still uses a solid state red knob Fender+AC30 reissue in his live rig and he sounds fantastic.

I'm using the Tone King Gremlin with Ocean's 11 reverb. I wouldn't necessarily call that wattage of amp generally low headroom, it depends on the usage. On the higher attenuation settings it does do really loud clean tones for home use and small venues. But the effect of reverb/modulation pre or post gain on overdriven amps is massive.
@dougc84
@dougc84 4 жыл бұрын
It's not about wattage. Wattage represents the amount of electrical signal that is going from the power amp to the speaker and has little to do with the preamp stage of the amplifier (where gain is generated on most amps). A 1 watt amp can have tons of clean headroom. A 100 watt amp can have no clean headroom.

Fenders and Peavey Classics have always been my favs for pedal platforms. I find Marshalls thin out too much with overdrive, and if you run them clean, they lose too many dynamics, whereas Fenders, like the Deluxe Reverb, really get out of the way of the pedals and act as a great tonal base without getting obnoxious. The Peavey classic is really what most players who want a Marshall sound should go for. They sound incredible and work great with pedals. I also love the Fender Bassman and Princeton as a platform. But I don't get why one would get a high gain amp, with excellent gain, like an Orange and run and overdrive pedal for the gain, which will be far inferior to what the Orange will produce naturally. Another thing, regarding effects in general, is that some effects loops sound terrible. Some, in fact, are very noisy. I find that effects loops also tend to work best for everything BUT distortion pedals in most amps that have one.

The problem with clean tube amps at lower volumes is that there's no real advantage to just getting a decently voices solid state amp(and a lot of them are increasingly good at emulating tube-like sag), so it's definitely worth considering that too.
@8sigreg
@8sigreg 4 жыл бұрын
Sister Rose Agreed. The point of using a tube amp is to find and ride the point the power-amp is starting to sustain/sag, then push it over with distortion, overdrive or a little preamp. I have great tube amps and use them that way. I also have a Nextone Stage, and push its power-amp the same way, and it sounds very good, costs a lot less and is smaller and lighter. The real difference then becomes the size of the cabinet and how well it spreads the sound; the Stage tends to beam the sound where the bigger tube combos spread it around the room.
@SisterRose
@SisterRose 4 жыл бұрын
@@8sigreg honestly what a lot of people think of as "tube sound" is just speakers & tone stack that round off the high end in a pleasing way and asymmetrical/less harsh clipping, as you only really get the sag when pushed to serious volumes. Which you can achieve by getting a decent SS amp, maybe doing a speaker swap, and throwing a Boss SD-1 in front of it(even better if you can get an FET based dirt box which emulates the "complexities" of a lot of tube amps pretty well). A lot of people are just using high headroom amps with a bunch of dirtboxes nowadays. There's a reason why lower wattage small tubers took off, but a lot of them didn't do the big saggy sound very well sadly, they were more for quirky gritty types of distortion you'd get from a decent vintage SS amp anyway. Also, some of them(at least the one I have) don't take pedals very well at all.
@thisguy2973
@thisguy2973 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve been using solid state amps forever, and just got my first tube amp a couple years ago. Kinda wish I went for a new solid state (I’ve been using a 15W Made in USA Peavey for 20 years as my practice amp) and use some good drive pedals instead. I’m not a fan of needing to crank a tube amp to power amp breakup and blowing out my ears; you just can’t practice with that at any volume that’s going to make it sound good without cranking it. It’s not talked about enough, but those loud ass tube amps are really great at destroying your hearing. No hearing = no music. That would be the most depressing point in my life.

when you don't use a booster anywhere in your signal chain, then yes, you'll lose some. But any pedal-board should have two to three booster imho anyways. Any Boss pedal f.e. does the job built-in. a lot of older standard pedals (before the true bypass craze) do too.
@juno980
@juno980 4 жыл бұрын
You will not lose any even remotable noticeable treble with any reasonable amount and length of cables. This has been debunked like a million times, it's only a problem on stages where you're running more than 60ft of cables. Also, for what it's worth, the output from your FX loop is already low impedance, and therefore there isn't even a chance that you will run into treble loss because of cables. Cheers

JC-22? Nope. A solid state Boss Katana 50 (used for under US $200), or a Monoprice 15 watt tube Stage Right (US $250) would both take pedals well and work even in most medium size venues.

Interesting to see the Deluxe Reverb as having headroom... Not if you play live! Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve always had a hard time having any headroom at all with a DR when there is a drummer and a bassist involved.
@MrBrawl
@MrBrawl 4 жыл бұрын
If you're having headroom problems with a DRRI, your drummer is too loud/it's not the right amp for the kind of music you're doing, plain and simple.
@Wileylikethehawk

MrBrawl It all depends on the situation. I know this. I actually had a custom DR made with a bigger transformer and a V30, and that worked very well. The Reissues are on the cusp of usability. Any old ones I have had (my fave was a ‘65) broke up so fast it was silly - but they sounded great in the studio!

@@Wileylikethehawk I know people who gig with Princetons just fine and they're doing rock and pop. I also gigged with a band where each guitarist had a 50w tube amp. It all depends on the band and the music. Generally speaking, if you can't gig with a DRRI, it's an oddball situation and I'm standing by that. More and more I see fewer bands mixing monitors well or only relying on stage volume because "that's how we did it back in the day." It is more possible than ever to gig with a lower wattage tube amp because of the efficiency of PA gear these days and it's why I can't sell 4x12s faster than 1x12 combo tube amps in my music stores. People are catching on.

@claytonthomas9262 4 жыл бұрын
I play with a drummer who is really f'n loud and I don't have issue keeping up with a DRRI. If you are having issues try adjusting your bias and if that doesn't work change the speaker. I liked it with a vintage 30, greenback works nice too a little sweeter.
@Wileylikethehawk
@Wileylikethehawk 4 жыл бұрын
MrBrawl Like I said, I get it for sure. I play about 150 shows a year, so it’s not my first BBQ. I guess what I was getting at is if you’re looking for “clean headroom” in a live situation, a DRRI might not be enough. That’s all! When I play in a crowded and hugely rocking bar with 300 people in, I’m using smaller amps but the DRRI is too small. In a theatre setting where acoustics are better and monitors are better its much easier to use a small amp that is mic’d properly.

I use a Fender Blues jr which has no effects loop. Set the gain at 1/4 and adjust volume to suit. All pedals sound killer thru this amp and it's plenty loud. Also using a Mesa F30. Pedal order matters and just run your reverbs and delays thru the amps effects loop if it has one and u plan on using the amps dirty channel or just keep your amp on a clean setting and run all your pedals thru the front.

Honestly anytime I plug my strat or especially my les paul into just the amp and give it a little volume push on my guitar knob it just sounds so full. The sound is incredible. Not too rock but not too clean either it's literally perfect and I had tried a few amps out. It takes all my pedals great too. Only one I've ever had a problem with is the Slö which was really upsetting (but I think that would as a pedal thing not the amp). 2019 MIM Jimi Hendrix Ultraviolet Strat & 2018 Honeyburst Les Paul Tribute into Vox AC30S1

@@pastorkev777 what about just putting the looper last in signal chain? I get it that some people like an FX loop, especially if they are getting overdrive/gain from their amp’s preamp section. Maybe im missing the obvious but i imagine that most use a Deluxe with pedals in front for OD and time based effects. Im sure there are exceptions - if your OD comes from just cranking your Deluxe to 10. But no sure that is practical these days.
@pastorkev777
@pastorkev777 3 жыл бұрын
@@VintageRadius that works for light looper work if the sounds are clean to start with. The input of an amp can only handle so much content until it sounds like mush. Not shoegaze wide, but distorted almost in a nasty square wave way that is hardly musical for most. The effects loop allows for greater fidelity, but the speaker itself has its limits.

There's also the issue of how that amps' distortion plays with the pedals, venue size, sound reinforcement etc. Small gigs, a Deluxe will be fine. Get in a 300 person room with enough P.A. for Drums and Vox - it's gonna sound different.
