Times change. Bought a very nice ar15, Aero Precision, for $550 during the glut of supply and low demand. Timing is everything. Training to learn how to use it? $50 per hour, 5 hour class, professionals. Follow on classes, 3 more levels same same hours and money. Weapon acquisition, ante. Training, $1,000. Plus ammo. Reid, I totally respect you. Emphasize price of training and it's value. You have the cred to address it.

Here's another option. Have multiple weapons in multiple calibers for those times when ammo might be scarce or overpriced ( like in 2020 ) Train with each, stock up on ammo, mags etc. When times get tough and lawlessness becomes widespread, you and your neighbors can protect your neighborhood. Very good video Reid, all SOLID points.

Really good advice... I served as a munitions systems and light weapons specialist with expert marksman rating so, I have an idea of your requirements. I have a couple of "bargain" ARs that I bought/built for under $500.00 as "secondary" weapons, one to hand to someone with me, etc.. I even have a Franklin Armory with the "fancy" trigger (wink, wink 😉). However... The AR I *count on,* everytime I pull the trigger?? A *CORE15.* It came with basic, MOE Magpul furniture (Not needed over stock but, a reasonable upgrade), a few Magpul magazines and I added a "Surefire" light. Rifle- $1,200 (right before the first, "Obama panic buy") + the light and a Magpul sling, aprox. $1,500 total. It's good from now to eternity with just an "OOPS kit" for essential replacement maintenance parts. Remove the Magpul furniture/mags and run stock AR furniture, a few steel, govt. mags and a decent, $75.00 light (keep the Magpul sling)... About $1,000. Good factory warranty, durable, made in FLA. They make all their primary components for upper and lower in *one* factory so, fitment is never an issue. Whatever brand you decide to buy, be sure the same is true so you don't have a sloppy upper/lower marriage and need wedges and such to keep it from rattling and the factory warranty covers everything, with no issues. 😊

Bought it back in Dec 2012 and it cost me over $1,200.00.The rifle is worth every penny and glad I bought it. Great vidio. Not saying a rifle is not a good home defense choice because they are but its just not my first choice. But for me when It came to buying my first rifles it came down to my budget, availability of amo, and parts in a shtf scenario and because i live in the U.S.A. I chose an ar15. Its a common gun around me and its the 5.56 is a common round in my environment. Not saying every one in the USA should own an ar15 but thats just my choice.
@randybryant29126 жыл бұрын
I agree with your thoughts on buying a good gun and the reasons you have, however, for the newer gun owner (specifically a AR), that it's best to buy a kit or preferably build from scratch. My thinking is that the owner needs to be intimate with how the rifle goes together so they can perform proper maintenance on the weapon. Also, in the process, you'd acquire the proper support tools to work with. Finally, If someone goes from scratch in a build and with a little research, they can build a weapon that's custom tailored to them and their needs without the wasted money for replacing parts that are unwanted from a pre-built Kits are cheap. Building from scratch can be as cheap, or gain one a rifle that would value itself far more than high dollar store bought rifle. There's nothing wrong with instant gratification at the gun shop, It's just that the owner needs to know how to repair or maintain it as well. Yes I know this is a 3 year old video.

I would like to hear your opinions on two different classes of rifles not discussed in this video. Short barrel rifle caliber pistols, converted to SBR's. And secondly, pistol caliber carbines. Specifically: 1. My work gun (as a SWAT Negotiator) is a Bushmaster Carbon 15 Pistol converted (with a tax stamp) to a SBR with a short thumb hole stock, with G.i. and P-Mags; 2. A Pap AK Pistol with a Sig type brace (currently in my gun room awaiting a more positive ruling), with metal AK mags;; and 3. A Kel-Tec .40 caliber Sub 2000 (my other work gun as a uniform police sergeant) that uses my Glock 22 and larger capacity Glock magazines. I feel that these guns fulfill your requirements (with the exception of caliber in the Sub 2000), and certainly mine. And, they run 100% reliable. I know that in all probability I will never shoot long distance, but instead from within a vehicle,or CQB, out to maybe 25 yards. By my bed..... a 12 gauge, a light, and a Glock. Whatcha think???
@libertytree25389 жыл бұрын
A $560 2015 WASR or Npap will do anything an slr will do. Except have a stock that folds. Both are factory built rifles with CHF barrels and they will run. For AKs price doesn't always determine reliability. Factory built AKs with CHF barrels and $10 steel surplus mags equal reliability.

I realize this video is somewhat old but I'd like to put my 2 cents in. I belive this is some solid advice concerning spending what it takes to get a good reliable rifle but, I'd like to point out that if you shop right you can get a mini14 for well under $800. I bought a new tactical maybe a year ago for $650 or so while it was on sale and even with the slightly higher cost of mags 6 of them still has me under $800. Just offering an exception to the rule, not to mention you can get a used mini from a police trade for even less and I would trust it.

Aren't there more things to consider for rifle selection? Like, if all I want my rifle to do is act as a home defender, why in the world would someone want a 308 type rifle for? Massive blast and muzzle flash inside of a house, overpenetration, heavier weight and recoil for smaller framed people are all very real concerns. And on the other hand, what if you are preparing for a possible defensive scenario against opponents wearing modern body armor? And not necessarily within the confines of your home? Then maybe you do want a 308 type weapon? Thoughtful questions like these need to be asked and answered. Not just throwing the dice on "whatever you like that's reliable."

Reid, I like what you stand for and I like your delivery methods in your videos. I bought a Norinco SKS, which has never jammed on me out of 2,000 rounds or so. Cheap cartidges might cause a problem in some weapons, but even the cheap ones fire a 7.62 x 39 round reliably. The reason I bought it is SKS's have a fixed 10 round mag and here in "fluffy" Caifornia, you can't buy rifles with more than a 10 round mag and you can't own the 30 round mag without fear of a cop sending you to jail even if you killed an inturder with that weapon. My experience (not as recent as yours) has been that no matter how well the weapon functions, if the individual gets too high on his/her adrenaline, the game is close to over for them. After being in the Army for 10 years (Vietnam, plus 3 tours in Korea), I don't have that adrenaline fear/rush anymore (at a few years over 60 years old it might be that I am too old to fear death anymore too?). I once shot a quail at 30 yards flying across my front with a pellet gun. I also shot a buck jumping off a cliff in mid-air through the heart with iron sights at 75 yards (jumping downhill across my front). What makes the rifle good is the way the individual "trains" and keeps their wits about them in panic situations or adrenline situations. Of course, my home defense weapon of choice is a pump shotgun loaded with quail load, turkey load, 00 buck, 00 buck, slug, slug.... The slugs are incase they try to limp away from the fight and get some distance out there :-) I hope people who have limited weapons experience take your course and practice, practice, practice. I wish your type of a course was available when I was younger, but I received real world experience and training.

TUNNEL RABBIT must have been some very low quality ARs or worse a kitchen table Frankenstein AR. Try a BCM, Aero Precision, Noveske or hell even smith and Wesson and Springfield make decent budget ARs. I’ll take the AR any day. Love the AK too but the AR is a bit more versatile
@tunnelrabbit42934 жыл бұрын
@@6thGearSmacked I am now a staunch AK guy, but because 5.56 ammo is everywhere and will be the most available, I do have one PSA AR, a new rifle that had to be reworked to be reliable....horrible craftsmanship. Lubrication is the primary issue with AR's, yet compare the best AR with the best AK, and it is no contest in my thoroughly researched conclusion, because reliability is the key issue, short and long term, and because I can shoot .20 cent/rd heavy soft points that will stop a fight fast, where as the AR would require many times more hits for the same effect, especially pass 150 yards. The AK will not require barrel changes and parts replacements, that the AR will require over the long haul. I could go on, and on. I run a heavy 21'' barrel on a heavy receiver that is more accurate, and will not become too hot to handle as quickly as most others, including any AR. This means I can run them in to the ground.... It also produces 200 fps faster bullets, 2,600 fps, so it is flatter and hits even harder. No contest, it's a winner. 16' barrels is good for clearing buildings during a 'police action', but they are a disadvantage when defending ground and up against heavier rifles. As you can see, I've given this some thought. AR's need speed, but M193 out of the 20'' barrel with the 1;7 twist, tend to come apart. If you can afford it, go with 77 SMK's, or even 75 grain Tula as an accurate and inexpensive bullets that can do some damage. Or check out the the soft points.....
@6thGearSmacked4 жыл бұрын
TUNNEL RABBIT well of course you had problems with a PSA it’s a PSA what do you expect. With a higher quality AR you wouldn’t have those issues out of the box. If you’re shooting enough to require barrel changes then lucky you haha, again I’m gonna go back to quality. A quality barrel for either AR or AK you shouldn’t have to worry about that. And like you said about the ammo, 556 is very readily available here in the US, that can be a big factor. Don’t get me wrong I love AKs but I feel as though the ergos of the AR are far superior, you don’t have to worry about rocking mags in or reaching over the gun to charge the bolt, safety selector is a flick of the wrist. But at the end of the day it’s personal preference, just don’t like when people bash either platform. They both have their merits. Can’t really go wrong with either of decent quality
@tunnelrabbit42934 жыл бұрын
@@6thGearSmacked The PSA was part of the payment for consulting.... Yes the ergos are better, but there is no contest when one uses .20 cent 154 grain soft points at 2,400fps that blows big holes in hogs. Which round would you rather get hit with? After having 5 new AR's of different manufacturers fail on me, that is all the proof I need. Not only I am sold on the knock down power, but mostly the superior reliability in austere conditions. The AK does not need lubrication to run... I've been in the mechanic business for 30 years. I know a good machine when I see it, and I will call it as I see and hope others see the fact for what they are.

I agree with the "how much is your life worth" sentiment to a degree. That being said, in the AK world we have very reliable options in terms of longevity with beginner rifles like the WASR 10s for example. You look at channels like AKOU where Rob Ski absolutely brutalizes all sorts of budget rifles that come out of testing still running like a dream and there are hundreds of love stories between veteran AK shooters and their beginner rifles that outlast even some of the other more top of the line competitors. I guess my point is dont knock budget rifles just for the price. You just have to do your proper homework before purchasing them.

The guns you show that are AVAILABLE in my horrible state (as 30 year old prebans) are 2-3 times the prices you mention. Magazines we're sh$t outta luck, new 10 round hexmags for $20 a piece. Yeah, they do sh$t like that in Ct. No AKs (actual law) and 308s are $2500-$5000. My life goal is to escape this democrat cesspool of traitors.

@Reid Hendrichs I was wondering what your standard of reliable is? Is there a magic number for you personally that you feel a rifle needs to shoots without fail before it is added to your "Battle" rifle role?
@Onefast459 жыл бұрын
Agreed, however a well trained and experienced shootist can shoot a 100.00 gun just a good, where the problem lies is in durabilty of the gun.

I know you said use an intermediate sized cartridge, but what do you think of the M1 carbine. It has been around for decades and was proven in battle, plus my wife loves to shoot hers because the recoil is soft..

Best rifle for defense ? Colt 6920 M4 carbine. Enough said.
@NavYblu997 жыл бұрын
Carbine length gas is not ideal. The price paid for the pony logo is not ideal. Maybe if it were the year 2000 you'd have a valid point.
@jakeweston86167 жыл бұрын
Carbine length gas is not ideal ? Tell that to the US military. Colt is the original manufacturer of the M4 platform and even the 6920 are built off of the actual mil specs. All other AR manufacturers including FN are not allowed to sell M4s to the civilian market based off of the original spec. Only Colt. If you are not willing to spend $900 to $1k on as close as you can get to the real thing then just by a ruger 10/22. If you pay more for an AR other than a Colt, then all you are getting extra is a hammer forged barrel. If you pay less, then you are getting an AR that is not milpec and doesn't have as high quality components and therefore cheaper. S&W M&Ps are a perfect example of this. Although they are a great AR but not manufactured for war. There is way more at play than a simple pony logo. Look at Chris Bartocci's youtube channel for info on this. The 6920's back in 2000 sold for an average of $12/1300. They are cheaper these days.
@NavYblu997 жыл бұрын
Another one of Chris's highlighted topics is the fact that Colt is a stagnant and dying company. He also shares my opinion that the midlength gas system is superior. Fuckhead.
@jakeweston86167 жыл бұрын
Colt has always lacked innovation. We all know that. It is because they have been more interested in military contracts than the civilian market. Everyone knows the military is conservative by nature therefore Colt has always tried to just give them what they want. Ironically it was Colt that created the M4 without the initial interest from the military. Lacking innovation and lacking quality are two vastly different things. Back in the 1990's everyone said Colt was dying then as well. Its funny how Chris' go to gun is a carbine length even though he prefers the mid length. Naturally there is nothing wrong with mid length. But the military seems quite happy with carbine length especially considering it was never intended for the degree of use it is at currently.
@asdfghjk29335 жыл бұрын
You can never go wrong with a colt, but there are FAR better options these days. I'd much rather get a BCM midlength than a 6920 for example.

I bought a Romanian WASR-10 back in 2007 for about $550. I've never had it jam or suffer from any sort of issues, but I was wondering if you think that comes close to a sufficient battle rifle? -although I have a feeling I already know the answer, lol.. If not at least I also have a Ruger mini 14 (the updated model).

Got a PSA AR-15 for 469 originally 699. Got 1000 rds of fiocchi 55gr and 10 pmag 30s for 339. Got a magpul ms3 sling and a sig romeo5 on sale for 119. All free shipping. Literally the gun optic sling, 10 mags, and 1000 rounds of ammo for less than a grand. Now to buy some training!

Excellent advise. My favorite is the M1A. Only negative is possible collateral damage in a home defense situation. I also like the 7.62 x 39 I really like the Ruger mini 30. What is your honest opinion on the Ruger mini 30? What ammo do you choose for self-defense in your 7.62 x 39? I also like the classic M1 30 carbine but not sure if it meets your criteria for reliability. I've heard it's very difficult to find reliable magazines. I appreciate your information and I may sign up for some of your classes. Do you have a classic marksmanship class that includes classic shooting positions and training on proper use of a shooting sling? With something like a classic M1A with iron sights . Thank you P.S, I was thinking about your first most important criteria of a reliable magazine. I thought about the M1 garand. I know most people think it's a dinosaur but the enbloc clips are extremely reliable and with practice and technique can also be extremely fast to reload. I've never heard of one failing to feed . Just a thought... Thanks again I appreciate your opinion and advice.

Real high end is an LRB M1A. My father had not touched an M14 since the 60s, is almost 70 and shot sub MOA with a Shep' scope mounted on it a day before eye surgery - and that ain't no BS. But, you will pay several grand for everything....

i bought a ptr91 battle rifle, its a hkg3 clone made on HK machines using HK blueprints, made in the USA, ptr made the receiver, and used some surplus HK g3 parts, the caliber is 761x51, i bought HK made metal 20rd, mags from, keep shooting .com they were $1.50 ea if you bought 100 mags, most were new in the wrappers, only about 5 had any wear, hk puts the date on the mags when they were made most were in the 1960,s and some in the 80,s, i really like the rifle and it will last me for my lifetime like reed said, Walmart used the carry zqi ammo, made to Nato specs, and the ammo is good fmj. i stocked up and store it in the mags.

Great video. Reid. Due to the state that I live in. We can not have the AK in my state which sucks. I picked up a century arms vz 58 chambered in 7.62x39 which isn't on my states ban list. I have 200 rounds through it so far. I was curious what you thought of the VZ 58. Thanks for you time.

My Arsenal Sam7sf is a monster it has never failed me once aside from one bad tula round got stuck half way down the tube. I've shot many AR15s but my BCM stacks up right next to my Sam7 it's the best most durable and rugged rifle I've owned. I love them both and have trained on them both. Of you are an AR15 kinda guy if suggest BCM. Great reliable rifles at very affordable prices

Good advice Ammo is what you didn't mention. You can have a very reliable rifle, and magazine and have shitty ammo and still have the equivalent of a 7 pound club. I have run across some bad tula steel that I have shot with my Saiga AK 47. Problem wasn't with the Rifle but with the primer in the ammo wasn't seated properly from the manufacture

Rifles that have been used in war clearly have greater success rates than weapons that have not. That is not a reason to choose one over another. The question to ask is, "What do I want my rifle to do?" If the answer is, "I want it to work." Then the solution is quite obvious. The ak is superior in every aspect of reliability. The ar only solves problems in order to create new ones. Will the M16 models and M4 models kill consistently? Absolutely they will. Will they consistently kill without logistical support. Probably they will. Would you wager your child's life on that weapon? Absolutely not.
