I remember how my father used to smell in the morning every time he was going to work. You are right. I still have that perfume in my mind and sometimes I wear it just to remember how it was when he lived .It is my favorite scent because was his perfume . Eau de Guerlain- Guerlain.

You're absolutely right, Dacob. The scent we are all searching for is Proust's madeleine. That ineffable whiff.

So true ! I was born in 85. Despite owning hundreds of colognes. I always go back to 80s frags. Drakkar noir. cool water. polo. Fresh invigorating aromatics. I dont know why as i was barely alive in this era but its my favorite style.

What a great video, I cried so much... My father always bought sweet perfumes for my mom... she was more of a chypre chanel chance person and didn't wear them and I ended up wearing them. Fastfoward almost 20 years and they are separated... I realized how my father was in desperatly need of some sweetness and love from my mother and she wasn't able to give them at that time... This video took me back and was very insightful and meaningful to me. Keep on doing what you love, Dacob... You're a true earth angel :)

Same here, I'm single. The person I was seen refused to accept small trinkets from me. I made a keychain just for them, and they didn't want it. Then, I offered them 50% discount code from the place I worked at; didn't want it. I invited that person out to eat, I always got turned down. That person moved to another state, and didn't even bother saying good bye to me.

Hi Dacob! My dad always smelled like hair pomade and some sort of Avon after shave. He had that Ricky Ricardo haircut, and thus the brilliantine pomade. My mother always smelled like a whiff of perfumed body creme and perfumed dusting powder during the work week. But I recall her having some L'air du Temps, and Faberge Tigress, Tabu, Frances Denny, Estee Lauder Youth Dew, Ambush by Dana. That sort when I was a kid. Then she found her signature scent in Oscar de la Renta when I was a teen. The one I liked most was her bottle of Estee Lauder Cinnabar (which is similar to Opium in it's dark Oriental spice). I still love Tabu. I once bought her some Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds for 'going to the grocery store'. 😊 For myself...if it sounds dangerous, I probably like it. Poison. Obsession. Opium, etc. These are what I love most. I also love the first version of Bijan. The flip side of me still loves the one I bought in high school: Alyssa Ashley Musk. I still use it. But I also love some citrusy summer scents like CK One, Cool Water and anything vanilla. Fragrance is so personal. It's one thing we can truly call our own when we choose it. ❤ PS. I need a bottle of Coco! ❤

My father wore Drakkar Noir and my grandfather wore Pierre Cardin. My mom Emeraude and then Angel. My love of perfume absolutely came from this.

I really think it’s not ONLY, and mostly not fragrances of our parents, but the aromas during your best childhood memories- what makes best blind buys. Just to think of it- baking with grandma for winter holidays, all of that vanillin mixed in with her aldehydic Chanel #5. Or the huge jasmine bush in front of the summer house all in bloom mixed in with seashore air( Ashore Amouage)Or the smell of tea and dad’s freshly shaved neck on a busy morning -Silver Mountain Water Creed. My dad never had any Creeds, but the mix of Gillette Aftershave and bright tea - pulls out memories

Surprisingly even though I never met my maternal grandma, a lot of fragrances I naturally gravitated towards ended up being ones my mum instantly remembered her mum having.

Luckily for me nobody in my family, or anyone I knew growing up wore perfume, so I didn't have any problems with scent associations. I don't have any concept of something being outdated, so I get to enjoy everything I like - even some made for women

Great topic and brilliant approach for finding your personal favourites- there is definitely some kind of deep emotional connection- my mum loves Shalimar - I also catch myself coming back to similar spicy- oriental scents like Musk Ravageur, Immortelle Corse and Cuir Cuba. Love to hear more about this, Dacob. ❤

My Mom wore Vent Vert. I bought her a new bottle from I Magnin in San Francisco right before it shut down as a keepsake. She passed three years later. Still some perfume left in the bottle. She wore Shalimar as well. I used to wear the old Estée Lauder Aliage. Haven’t worn it in years but as I reflect it was also a verdant fragrance. This is such an interesting perspective.

A cup of morning coffee with Dacob 😊 Thanks for the video! ❤ For me, my earliest perfume memories, I think, was the smell of ylang ylang, jasmine, and rose in some perfume, which name I cannot remember, and the smell of fresh lily of the valley from my grandmother's garden. 🥰

That was fantastic! I absolutely love your idea and agree with it! When I tried Chanel N5 for the first time it seemed familiar to me though none of my female relatives wore it) later I began to think about my grand-grandmother who adored jasmine (as a mono fragrance and as a flower to place in a vase))) and lily of the valley, she would always wear either of them in her perfume!

I grew up in a rural area; cut woods, teas made with lemon/orange/citrons/mandarin citrus leafs made by my grandma. The smell of wet and dry hay, the scent of mint, pears. Then, I took culinary and pasty classes. I fell in love with the scent of real vanilla beans, cacao, cardamon, nutmeg, black pepper, ginger. Now, I love perfumes like: 1. Sauvage EDP; woods and bergamot. 2. Dior Homme Intense; chocolate, vanilla, hay, mint, pear, vetiver. 3. Percival; crushed orange leaves. 4. Spicebomb Extreme; vanilla, and cardamon. 5. YSL Y, Bleu de Chanel, Bad Boy Le Parfum; ginger. And I really can't stand the scent of my father; Brut aftershave cologne, and a Speed Stick deodorant that smells like it.

I have a vintage Chloe perfume that would be considered 'granny scent' and I adore it, the only Chloe scent I can stomach. Ageism is an unfortunate way to look at things. There's so much to learn and admire from previous generations. If we don't see their value, it's like throwing the baby out with the bathwater and a reflection of our own self-imposed limitation. As for my immediate family, they have never been anything but obstinate and critical of me, bless their hearts! I march to the beat of my own drum and there in lies some of that obstinate mentality I inherited.😂Nevertheless, being a teeny tiny in the 80s, I love the powdery scents like Shalimar and Chantilly. They will always be comforting scents for me. Despite a less than ideal childhood, relationally, kids have a way of appreciating the wonder and magic of their surroundings. That's why I believe maybe the bravest quality we can have and retain is an open heart.

My mom built a perfume collection over time, but mostly after I left for college. My dad always wore Old Spice aftershave. My grandparents never wore more than soap...but they raised their children before and during the Great Depression. There just wasn't extra money for nicer things like fragrance. (My mom only knew one of her grandparents and she died when my mom was 10. My dad never knew either of his grandfathers--one died in 1895 when my grandfather was 2 of heat stroke, and the other died 5 years before my dad was even born--and his grandmothers died while he was still in high school.) As for me, I wore a few fragrances during college...and in 1981, I settled on my signature scent...at least until November 2023, when my daughter encouraged me to explore parfums. I DID wear this signature scent when she was a baby so that she would know my scent. Trying new fragrances has now become something I can share with my daughter, and also my granddaughter and grandson.

Hi Dacob, beautiful video, so interesting and deep... My mom has been wearing Shalimar and COCO for the longest time, my grandmother Chamade and Jardin de Bagatelle, my grandfather Habit Rouge!😅 On the other side, my second grandmother loved Chanel number 5, she gave me a very old EDT bottle decades ago that I still have...🥹 I noticed that I'm hardly attracted by other brands and only Guerlain and Chanel feet perfectly my tastes. Shalimar stincks on me, but I've always felt the need to spray on myself something close to the guerlinade, jasmine, vanilla, iris etc... I've definitely been influenced by all the smells I mentioned before, like, I need "oriental" stuff, warm scents. I must also confess that all the people that really matter to me, that I loved, or still love, gave me a bottle of Chanel 5... (Not only my grandma...)🤫, maybe to be remembered in a the most beautiful way...😌🖤🤍 🤗 Thanks again for this great content, love you very very much 💝💝💝💝

Super Dacob, I recently bought Liz Claiborne perfume after watching one of your videos where you mentioned it. It's the one that comes in the triangle bottle in the primary colors. I know that you also mentioned in the past that you love Secret Obsession which I also love. Have you smelled Bora Bora by Liz Claiborne? I see that it is created by one of the noses behind Secret Obsession - Calice Becker (with Ann Gottlieb). I would be curious to hear your thoughts on it.
